22년 전에 개봉된 덴젤 워싱톤 주연의 영화가 있습니 다. 영화 에서 덴젤 워싱톤의 연기력에 매료되어 그 후 덴젤 워싱톤이 나오는 영화는 찾아보는 편인데, 다음 주 수요말씀여행을 준 비하다가, 이 영화가 다시 떠올랐습니다. 주인공 덴젤 워싱톤은 특전사 출신으로 알콜 문제로 은퇴하고 조용히 지내다가, 부유한 집안의 딸 피 타의 보디가드로 일을 시작하게 됩니다. 그러나 갱단들에 의해 피타는 납치되고, 보디가드 덴젤이 갱단들을 소탕하면서, 자기가 책임진 소녀 피타를 결국 구해내는 박진감 있는 액션 영화입니다. 좀 잔인한 장면들 이 있지만, 결국 마지막에 소녀를 구해내는 방법은 자신의 생명과 교환 하자는 갱단의 제안이었습니다. 이미 총에 맞아 많은 출혈이 있던 덴젤 워싱톤은 동의를 하고, 자기 목숨과 소녀 피타를 맞바꿉니다. 엄마의 품 에 돌아와 안정을 찾는 피타와 갱단의 차 뒤에서, 결국 큰 출혈로 숨이 멎는 주인공의 모습이 오버랩 됩니다.

이때 한참 총 싸움 하던 어두운 영 화 분위기에 선명한 빛줄기가 조명하듯 밝아집니다. 관객들이 여기저기 눈물을 적시고 흐느끼는 소리가 들립니다. 슬픔과 더불어 뭔지 모르지 만 물밀듯 밀려오는 감동을 경험하게 됩니다. 왜 주인공이 죽는 장면에서 감동이 몰려올까요? 저는 주저함 없이 그 안 에 복음의 원리가 숨어 있기 때문이라고 말씀 드릴 수 있습니다. 자기 목숨을 내어주며 소녀의 생명을 살려내는 모습이 정확하게 십자가의 은 혜를 상기시키기 때문입니다.

복음을 모르고 십자가가 무엇인지 모르는 사람들에게도 복음의 원리는 항상 감동을 자아냅니다. 제가 왜 수요말 씀을 준비하다가 이 영화가 생각났을까요? “예수, 우리의 대속물”을 설 명하기 위해서 너무 적절한 예가 영화 속에 담겨 있었기 때문입니다. 모든 영화에는 감동의 구성(plot)이 숨어 있습니다. 영화감독이 의도했 던 안 했던, 감동의 구성은 복음의 원리를 닮았습니다. 저는 은퇴 후, 저 의 목회 40년+동안 실제로 겪은 성도들의 훈훈한 이야기를 시나리오로 써보려고 합니다. <순풍 산부인과> 같은 시트콤을 교회 안에서 일어나 는 수많은 재미있는 에피소드와, 그리고 희생과 눈물과 헌신의 감동 스 토리를 시트콤으로 넷플릭스에 올리고 싶습니다. 저는 가끔 영화나 드 라마 속에 기독교 교인이나, 목회자를 신비주의에 빠진 이상한 이단이 나, 사기꾼으로 폄하하는 것을 늘 아쉬워했습니다. 교회 하면 ‘싸움터’ 로 생각하는 속된 인식을 바꾸어, 가장 따뜻한 삶의 현장, 연약한 자들이 신앙 안에서 다시 일어나는 눈물겨운 이야기들, 불가능한 상황에서 기 적을 체험한 간증들을 글로 남기는 작업을 하고 싶습니다. 어렸을 때 봤 던 <월튼네 사람들> 같이 따듯하고 <응답하라 1988>처럼 재밌고 <슬 기로운 의사생활>처럼 감동 있는 <우당탕탕 어바인 생활> 시청률 신기 록을 세우며 상영될 날을 기대합니다.

Sitcom <Topsy-Turvy Irvine Life>

There is a movie called , starring Denzel Washington, which was released 22 years ago. Ever since I was captivated by Denzel Washington’s acting in the movie , I have tended to seek out his movies. While preparing next week’s message for Wednesday Word Journey, this movie came to my mind. The main character, played by Denzel Washington, is a former Special Forces soldier who retired due to alcoholism and was living quietly before taking a job as a bodyguard for Pita, the daughter of a wealthy family. However, Pita is kidnapped by a gang, and the film becomes an action thriller where Denzel wipes out the gang to ultimately rescue the young girl he was responsible for. Although there are some brutal scenes, the final way to save the girl was accepting the gang’s proposal to exchange his own life for hers. Denzel Washington, who had already been shot and suffered heavy blood loss, agrees to trade his life for the young girl, Pita. The scene overlaps showing Pita returning to her mother’s arms to find safety, while behind the gang’s car, the main character takes his last breath due to severe blood loss. At that moment, a vivid beam of light shines down like a spotlight, brightening the dark movie atmosphere filled with intense gunfire. Audiences can be heard tearing up and weeping here and there. Along with sadness, a surge of profound emotion washes over everyone.

Why does such deep emotion surge during the scene where the main character dies? Without hesitation, I can say it is because the principle of the Gospel is hidden within it. The act of laying down one’s life to save the girl’s life precisely reminds us of the grace of the Cross. Even for people who do not know the Gospel or understand what the Cross is, the principle of the Gospel always evokes deep emotion. Why did I think of this movie while preparing for the Wednesday’s message? Because the movie contained a perfectly fitting example to explain “Jesus, Our Ransom”.

Every movie hides a narrative plot designed to move hearts. Whether the director intended it or not, the structure of moving people resembles the principles of the Gospel. After I retire, I plan to write scenarios based on the heartwarming stories of church members that I have personally witnessed over my 40+ years of ministry. I want to create a sitcom—like —that captures the many fun episodes that take place inside the church, along with touching stories of sacrifice, tears, and devotion, and upload it to Netflix. I have always felt regretful seeing Christians or pastors portrayed in movies and dramas as strange cultists trapped in mysticism, or as scammers. I want to change the worldly perception of the church being seen as a ‘battleground,’ and instead write about the most heartwarming grounds of real life—moving stories of the weak rising again through faith, and testimonies of experiencing miracles in impossible situations. I look forward to the day when —warm like that I watched in my youth, fun like , and touching like —will air and set new viewership records.
