기독교 신문을 읽다가 전라도 최초 의료선교사 드류(Alessandro Drew) 부부의 유해가 한국에 왔다는 기사를 접하게 되었습니다. 미국 남장로교 파송을 받아 1894년 4월 4일 한국에 온 드류 선교사 내외는 전주에서 처음으로 서양 의료를 시행했으며, 군산에서 최초의 간이 진료소와 약방진료를 했다고 합니다. 군산 전주 목포 순천 및 광주까지 선교 기지가 조성되었고, 선교선(Mission Boat)을 이용하여 섬들을 다니며 지금의 섬선교의 효시와 모델이 되었다고 합니다. 1901년에 병환의 악화로 안식년과 함께 고향 샌프란시스코로 돌아왔지만, 건강 문제로 끝내 전라도 선교지로 복귀하지 못하였다고 합니다. 샌프란시스코에 머물면서 마침 만난 도산 안창호 선생을 자신의 집에서 살게 하며, 도산의 미국 정착과 한국 독립운동을 위한 후원을 아끼지 않았다고 합니다. 그리고, 그의 후손들의 결심으로 그렇게 돌아가길 염원했던 한국으로 드류 선교사 부부의 유해가 오게 된 것이었습니다.

애굽의 총리까지 지냈던 요셉이 애굽에서 숨을 거두면서 남긴 유언이 기억납니다. 하나님의 약속의 땅으로 올라갈 때 자기의 해골(유해)을 메고 가달라는 유언에 따라, 결국 요셉의 무덤은 지금 야곱의 우물이 있는 가나안 땅에 남게 됩니다. 어찌 생각해 보면 가나안 땅에서는 17세까지 살았고, 그 이후 110세에 죽기까지 93년의 타향살이를 했음에도 그는 자기 유해가 가나안 땅(하나님이 약속하신 땅)에 묻히기를 소원했습니다. 자신의 유해가 묻히는 것은 어쩌면 자신 보다는 후세에게 주는 메시지가 훨씬 큰 것 같습니다. 자기의 조상이 묻혀 있는 땅에 대한 약속과 역사와 흔적이 오늘을 사는 후손들에게 그 땅을 지켜야 할 동기와 이유를 주기 때문입니다. 그런 의미에서 2016년 저희 부친의 유해가 평생 섬기셨던 필라델피아 영생교회 묘지에 안치된 것은 자손들에게 모 교회를 아끼고 사랑하는 근거를 줍니다. 드류 선교사님 내외의 유해가 한국 전라도에 온 것 역시 그 자손들이 한국에 대한 마음을 보여줍니다. 부모님이 섬겼던 한국, 부모님이 평생 다시 가고 싶어했던 한국, 그 나라의 독립을 위해서 애쓰셨던 부모님의 뜻을 받들어, 한국에 유해를 들고 온 자녀들은 어떤 일이 있어도 한국을 결코 배신하지 않을 것입니다.

우리에게도 다음 세대를 위해서 묻히고 싶은 곳이 있으리라 믿습니다. 베델에 와서 베델 앞마당에 묘지를 만들고 싶어서 백방으로 알아 보았지만, 이제는 법적으로 금지된 사항이라 접었습니다만, 우리 후세들이 부모들이 묻힌 곳이 베델이라는 것을 알면, 틀림없이 끝까지 베델을 지켜갈 것이라 믿음이 섭니다. 우리의 마음의 고향은 주님의 나라가 끝까지 왕성하게 세워질 베델입니다.

Where Should I Be Buried?

I came across an article while reading a Christian newspaper that the remains of first medical missionaries to Jeollado, Alesandro Drew and his wife came to Korea. They were missionaries sent by American Southern Presbyterian Church. Upon arrival in Korea on April 4th, 1894, Missionary Drew and his wife began administering Western medicine in Jeonju area for the first time. They opened a very first clinic and pharmacy in Gunsan. Their mission fields comprised of Gunsan, Jeonju, Mokpyo, Soonchun and Gwangju area. They used a Mission Boat to travel to different islands. This has become a core model for island missions today. Due to their worsening illness, they took a sabbatical and returned home to San Francisco in 1901. They never return to the mission field of Jeollado due to health issues. While living in San Francisco, they met Dosan Ahn Changho and had him stay at their house. They helped Dosan to settle in the United States, and never held back from supporting the Korean independence movements. They have longed to return to Korea. Their descendants decided to take the remains of Missionary Drew and his wife to Korea.

I am reminded of the final request of Joseph, Governor of Egypt, at his deathbed. According to Joseph’s will to carry his remains to God’s promised land, Joseph’s tomb resides in Canaan by the Well of Jacob. When you think about it, Joseph lived in Canaan until 17 years old. By his death at 110 years of age, he lived in foreign land for 93 years. However, he wished to be buried in Canaan(God’s promised land). In a way, where our remains are to be buried has a much greater message to the next generation than to ourselves. This is because the promise, history and the evidence of the land where our ancestors are buried give the descendants living today motivation and reason to protect the land. In that sense, the fact that my father’s remain was laid to rest in 2016 in the cemetery of Yeongsaeng Church in Philadelphia, where he served his entire life, gives his descendants a basis for cherishing and loving their mother church. The fact that the remains of Missionary Drew and his wife came to Jeollado, Korea also shows their descendant’s heart for Korea. Korea, where their parents served, and where their parents longed to return and worked hard to support the nation’s liberation. Accepting the will of their parents, the children brought their parents’ remains to Korea. No matter the circumstances, they would never betray Korea.

I believe that we too have a place where we would like to be buried for the sake of the next generation. When I came to Bethel, I researched to find a place nearby with a desire to build a cemetery at Bethel. I had to give up since this is no longer legally possible. I have faith that if our future generations know that Bethel is where their parents are buried, they will definitely protect Bethel to the end. Home of our hearts is Bethel, where the Lord’s kingdom will be established to the end.
