저는 모든 예배가 귀하고 소중하다고 생각합니다. 주일예배, 수요예배, 토요예배… 중요하지 않은 예배가 없습니다. 예배는 우리가 ‘마땅히’ 하나님께 ‘즐겨’ 드려야 할 경배입니다. 모든 성도는 예배에 앞에 나와야 할 ‘의무’가 있습니다. 예수 그리스도의 속죄의 은혜로 거룩한 하나님 앞에 담대히 나올 수 있는 특권은 예배 드려야 할 ‘당위성oughtness’을 자동으로 갖게 됩니다. 왕으로부터 온 초대장을 받은 것은 특권입니다. 너무 감격스러워서 다른 스케줄을 미루고, 왕의 초대에 응하기 위해 최고의 옷을 입고, 참석하는 것입니다. 만약 그 초대를 거절하거나, 참석 하지 못하는 변명을 나열하기 시작한다면, 예배의 특권을 포기한 사람이며, 그 특권을 특권으로 생각하지 않는 사람입니다. 초대에 응하는 것은 초대한 자의 지위와 권위와 영광을 인정하는 마땅함입니다. 의무감과는 다릅니다. 세금의 의무, 국방의 의무… 이런 말을 할 때 쓰는 의무감과 왕의 초대에 나아가는 ‘마땅함’은 그 접근하는 태도와 마음의 경외심이 다릅니다. 아니, 다르다고만 얘기할 수 없습니다. 그 차이는 하늘과 땅 차이라고 말해도 결코 지나침이 없습니다.

그 이유는 예배의 또 하나의 요소는 ‘즐거움’이기 때문입니다. 나 같은 사람이 왕의 초대를 받았다는 감격이 예배에 자리에 나올 때마다 있는 것입니다. 우리는 나병환자가 다시 진영 안 예배의 자리로 나아 오는 과정을 잘 배웠습니다. 불치의 병에서 기적과 같이 씻음 받은 죄인이 제사장 앞에 나와 진단을 받고, ‘깨끗하다’는 확인을 받으며, 새 한마리를 잡아, 그 피를 또 한 마리의 새에 뿌려 날려 보내며, 그처럼 내 죄가 동이 서에서 먼 것 같이 사라져 버린 것에 감격하며, 몸의 머리 수염 등 모든 털을 밀고, 깨끗이 목욕한 후 진영 밖에 장막을 치고, 일주일을 지내며 한 주 후에 진영 안으로 들어갈 것을 하루 하루 날을 세며 기다렸다가 8일째 장막에서 나와 속건제와 속죄제와 번제를 드리며 진영으로 들어가 그 예배의 현장, 하나님의 임재의 현장으로 나아가는 특권을 얻게 됩니다. 이 감격과 기쁨을 예배의 ‘즐거움’으로 표현하기는 부족한 것입니다. 삶의 최고의 정점을 찍는 순간이요, 인생의 슬라이드쇼가 멈추는 순간일 것입니다.

저는 부흥회는 예배의 이런 ‘마땅함’과 ‘즐거움’을 회복하는 시간이라 믿습니다. 우리는 앞으로도 왕중왕의 초대에 어떻게 응하고 답해야 하는지 끊임없이 도전받고 훈련 받을 것입니다. 이번 부흥회 초대에 은혜가 넘쳤으리라 믿습니다. 그리고 이 예배의 ‘마땅함’과 ‘즐거움’을 기억하며, 오늘도 손에 초대장을 받아 든 성도답게 예배의 은혜를 충만히 누리시길 기도합니다.

Oughtness and Joy of Worship

I believe all worships are precious and important. Lord’s Day worship, Wednesday worship, and Saturday worship…there isn’t a worship that is not important. Worship “ought” to be “joyful” adoration to God. All believers have the ‘responsibility’ to be in the presence of worship. The privilege to come boldly before the holy God, through the grace of atonement of Jesus Christ, automatically gives us ‘oughtness’ to worship. To receive an invitation from the King is a privilege. This is to accept the King’s invitation, putting aside all our schedules, and attend in our best attire. If you declined the invitation or gave excuses why you cannot attend, then you have given up on your privilege to worship, you become a person who do not believe in this privilege. To accept the invitation means that you acknowledge the inviter’s stature, authority and glory that he deserves. This is different than obligation. Tax obligations, national defense obligations… The obligation from these words and the ‘oughtness’ to approach the King’s invitation are different in attitude and reverence in your hearts. No, we cannot just say they are different. You should even go as far as to say that the difference is like heaven and earth.

The reason is because another element of worship is ‘joy.’ Every time we come to worship, we feel moved that someone like me has been invited by the King. We learned about the steps by which a leper came back to the place of worship in the camp. A sinner who has been miraculously cleansed from an incurable disease comes before the priest. He is diagnosed and confirmed to be “clean.” He sacrifices a bird, and its blood is sprinkled on another bird, and the bird is set free. He is thrilled that his sin has disappeared as far as the east from the west. He shaves all his hair, including his head, beard, and other hair. After bathing cleanly, he sets up a tent outside the camp. He spends a week, counting each day to enter the camp. On the 8th day, he comes out of tent, offers the trespass offering, sin offering, and burnt offering, and enters the camp, and gains the privilege of entering the place of worship and the presence of God. It is not enough to describe this emotion and joy just as ‘joy’ of worship. It would have been the moment he has reached the peak of his life, the moment when the slideshow of his life stops.

I believe revival is the time when this ‘oughtness’ and ‘joy’ of worship is restored. We shall continue to be challenged and trained on how to accept and respond to the invitation of the King of Kings. I believe that the invitation to this week’s revival was full of grace. As we remember the ‘oughtness’ and ‘joy’ of worship, I pray that you, who received the invitation in your hands, fully enjoy the grace of worship today.
