예수님이 오신 성탄의 계절에 우리는 선물을 서로 주고받습니다. 언제부터 성탄절에 선물을 서로 주고받았는지 모르지만, 아마도 하나님이 우리에게 주신 가장 큰 선물이 예수님이기 때문에 감사해서 그 선물을 기념하며 우리도 나누는 것이 아닌가 싶습니다.

선물을 정의하자면 나의 수고로 번 대가가 아닌, 자격이 없지만, 그냥 공짜로 받은 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 그래서 선물을 은혜(grace)라 부릅니다. 한 해를 마무리하면서 우리의 고백은 ‘모든 것이 은혜이요, 나의 나된 것이 은혜’입니다. 그러나 한 가지 명심할 것은 거저 받은 것이 은혜이지만, 은혜는 결코 싸구려는 아닙니다.

누군가가 최근 다저스와 계약을 맺은 오타니 선수가 자신이 홈런 친 공을 싸인을 해서 선물로 주었다고 가정해 봅시다. 그 선물의 가치는 돈으로 환산할 수 없을 것입니다. 선물 받을 때, 너무 고맙고 황송하기까지 했을 것입니다. 그러나 시간이 지나가면서 야구공이 그냥 집안 바닥에 굴러다닙니다. 아이들이 지나다니면서 야구공을 찹니다. 밖에 나가 놀다가 마당 구석에 버려져 비도 맞고 먼지가 쌓여 있습니다. 아이들은 그 야구공의 가치가 얼마나 큰지 모르고, 일반 야구공처럼 다뤘을 것입니다. 왜냐하면 선물로 받은 오타니 야구공을 귀하게 다루는 것을 본 적이 없기 때문이 아니었을까요?

요즘 성탄절은 예수님이 빠진 명절이 아닌가 싶을 정도로, 주인공은 사라지고 조연 산타 할아버지만 나오는 영화를 보는 것 같습니다. 메리 크리스마스가 아니라, 해피 홀리데이로 인사말이 바뀌는 현상도 그 일례입니다. 그러나 혹시 우리가 하나님의 최고 선물인 예수님을 소홀히 대했기 때문에 이런 현상이 일어난 것은 아닌가 반성해 봅니다. 정말로 우리의 삶에 예수님을 주님으로 섬기며, 주님의 말씀을 무겁게 순종하는 모습을 보였다면 이 세상이 예수님을 산타로 바꿔버리지는 않았을 것 같습니다.

예수님은 은혜로 우리에게 선물로 오신 하나님의 아들입니다. 결코 싸구려 선물이 아닌, 가격을 매길 수 없는 최고의 주님이십니다. 이 세상이 그 분으로 말미암아 지음 받은 그 분의 것입니다. 예수님 앞에서 안하무인격으로 거짓말하고, 세상 사람들보다 더 정치적이고 이기적으로 된다면 이 세상은 결코 예수님을 존중히 여기지 않을 것입니다. 이 성탄절에 예수님을 최고 최대 최선으로 높여 영광을 돌립시다. 예수님이 내 생애의 최고임을 선포합시다. 예수님이 내 옆에 계신 것처럼 예의를 지킵시다. 그러면 이 세상이 결코 예수님을 가볍게 취급하지 않을 것입니다. Merry Christmas to all and respect Jesus who is the reason of this season.

Grace is Free but Not Cheap

We exchange gifts with one another during Christmas season when Jesus Came. I am not sure when we started giving gifts to each other during Christmas season. Perhaps, we share gifts to celebrate with gratitude of the greatest gift that God gave us, Jesus.

Definition of gift is to receive something for free. It is not by one’s own works, nor deserving. That is why gift is called grace. As we close out the year, our confession is that “Everything is grace, I am who I am by grace”. Although grace is to receive for free, what we need to remember is that grace is definitely not cheap.

Let’s assume that someone received a gift of an autographed baseball from a homerun by Otani, who just signed a contract with Dodgers. The value of that gift is probably priceless. That person would have been grateful and even felt undeserving to have received such a gift. However, over time, the baseball would just roll around the house. Children kick it around. They take it outside and play. It gets left out in rain and piled up with other stuff. Children would have no clue the value of this baseball. They treated it as a regular baseball. That’s because they have never seen this baseball, received as a precious gift from Otani.

These days, it feels like Christmas is just a holiday without Jesus. It’s like watching a movie about Santa Claus, a supporting actor without the lead actor. Greeting is another example. It has changed. It is no longer Merry Christmas but just Happy Holidays. I reflect on this change. Perhaps, we see this kind of occurrences because we have neglected the greatest gift of Jesus. If we truly worshiped Jesus as our Lord, if we had shown our deeper obedience to His words, then this world would not have traded Jesus for Santa.

Jesus is God’s Son who came to us, by grace, as a gift. He is the greatest Lord, priceless and definitely not a cheap gift. This world was created through Him, and it belongs to Him. If we spitefully lied before Jesus, if we became more political and selfish than the world, then the world would not value and respect Jesus. Let’s lift up Jesus with our best and greatest, and glorify Him on this Christmas. Let’s proclaim Jesus as the greatest in our lives. Let’s be polite to others as if Jesus is right next to us. Then the world will not assume Jesus lightly. Merry Christmas to all, and respect Jesus who is the reason for the season.
