‘이 또한 지나가리라!’ 다윗왕이 당시 최고의 보석 세공사에게 반지 제작을 부탁하며 자신의 큰 승리에 기쁨을 억제하지 못할 때, 글귀를 보며 마음을 조절할 수 있도록 새겨 넣은 문장이라고 합니다. 이 글귀는 고난 속에 있는 자들에게 더 유명한 말씀입니다. 그러나 유대인의 신앙교육서 [미드라시 Midrash, מדרש[에 의하면 큰 승리의 기쁨을 제어할 뿐 아니라, 인생 고난의 밑바닥에서 끌어올릴 수 있는 글귀로 제작된 것이라 하니, 생각할수록 명언 중에 명언이 아닐 수 없습니다. 어쩌면 우리에겐 임재범의 노래로 더 기억되는 타이틀이 되었습니다. 허스키한 목소리로 불려진 이 노래는 이렇게 시작됩니다.

세상 속에 고된 나의 하루도 / 항상 네가 있었어 / 나의 삶이 허물 투성이라도 / 내 손을 잡아준 사람 / 나와 같은 / 고통의 길을 걷고 / 같은 꿈을 바라봐 주는 믿음 / 너의 손을 붙잡고 / 끝없는 폭풍 속을 / 이 거친 파도 속을 / 뛰어들 자신이 있어 / 눈물도 초라함도 / 이 또한 지나가리라

아무리 폭풍우가 불어도 손 붙잡고 같이 그 길을 가 주는 친구가 있다면, ‘이것도 지나갈꺼야’라는 소망 속에 이겨낼 수 있다는 말입니다. 한때 깜깜한 터널을 지나는 것 같은 어려움의 시간을 보낸 적이 있습니다. [목회]라는 사명을 내려 놓아야 하는 절대절명의 순간이 왔을 때 강단 바닥에 앉아 ‘주여~’만 외치며 기도하던 긴 터널과 같은 시간이 있었습니다. 그때 엎드러져 있던 저의 어깨를 툭 치며 찾 아오셨던 주님의 손길을 잊을 수가 없습니다. 매일 새벽기도 후 어김없이 동이 터오던 아침은 주님의 손길이었습니다. 어둠의 터널 끝에 아주 세미한 빛이 보이기 시작했던 것입니다. 아무리 긴 터널도 끝이 있습니다.

터널을 지나보지 않은 사람은 아침 햇살의 밝음을 알 수가 없습니다. 오늘도 언제 끝날지 모르는 터널을 지나는 분들에게 “이 또한 지나 가리라!” 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 주님의 손이 나를 포기하지 않고 붙들고 있습니다. 그 손 붙들고 계속 이끄시는대로 걸어가면 터널의 끝에 빛이 보이기 시작할 것입니다. 아직도 터널 같지만, 저 멀리 빛이 보입니다. 곧 이 어둠도 지나갈 것입니다.

This too shall pass away!

“This too shall pass away!” As King David asked the best jeweler of the time to make a ring, while unable to suppress the overwhelming joy of his victory, it is said that this phrase was engraved to control his feelings. However, this phrase is more famous among those who are suffering. According to Jewish religious teachings [Midrash, שרדמ[, not only does this control the feelings of joy of great victory, but this phrase was written to bring people out from life’s lowest moments. The more you think about it, this must be the wiser of all wise sayings. Perhaps, we remember this phrase as title of a song by singer Jaebum Im. Lyrics of the song, sung in his husky voice, goes like this.

My day in this arduous world, / you were always with me. / Even if my life was full of blemishes, / I walk the same road of suffering, / with the one / that holds my hand; / Trust to gaze on the same dream, / holding your hand / through endless storms, / and the roughest of waves, / I can jump in with confidence. / Tears or shabbiness, / This too shall pass away.

This speaks of overcoming with hope that “this too shall pass away”, if there is a friend who can walk with you holding hands no matter what storms may bring. There was a time when I went through a very difficult period like walking through a dark tunnel. It was time of prayer, crouching on the altar floor, only to cry out ‘Lord~’. It felt like a long tunnel. It was an absolute moment of letting go of my calling to [ministry]. I cannot forget Lord’s hand that tapped my slumped shoulder. Each day, after early morning prayer, it was Lord’s hand that came with the dawn of the day. I began to see a faint glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Even a long tunnel has an end.

You do not realize the brightness of a morning light unless you have gone through a tunnel. I want to say, “This too shall pass away!” to those who are going through an endless tunnel today. God is holding your hand, never giving up. If you continue to hold and follow his guidance, you will begin to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Even though
you may still be in a tunnel, there is a light in the distance. Darkness shall pass away.
