연말이 되면, 고마운 사람들이 떠오릅니다. 예수님이 오신 크리스마스의 계절이라 12월은 더욱 감사가 넘칩니다. 사무실에서 내려다 보이는 주차장에 가득 찬 차량도 미소를 품은 것 같습니다. 교회 옆 야생 보호지역에서 떼로 날아가는 새들이 저기 보이는 골프장 너머 날아가는 모습도 감사의 마음을 실어 나르는 바쁜 모습입니다. 예배당으로 걸어 들어오는 좌우 꽃밭에는 아름다운 꽃들이 만개해 있고, 본당 앞에도 반짝이는 트리가 “메리 크리스마스!” 외치며 입장하는 성도들을 반기고 있습니다.

얼바인 대학의 학생 합창단과 오케스트라가 지난주 우리 교회 본당에서 공연을 하면서 ‘고요한 밤 거룩한 밤’ ‘노엘 노엘’ 등 캐럴 찬양과 함께 맘껏 주님 오심을 감사하며 찬양하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 얼바인 대학 교수들도 참여하면서, 학교 근처에 이렇게 좋은 교회가 있었다는 것을 몰랐다며 다시 내년에도 이곳에서 하고 싶다는 말들을 남겼습니다. 반세기 가까이 얼바인에 있던 우리 교회의 존재를 지역사회에 알리는 기회가 된 것 같아서 참 감사했습니다.

예수님이 우리에게 오신 지 2000년이 되었지만, 아직도 예수님의 존재를 알지 못하는 분들도 있을 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 단순히 연말의 분위기가 아니라, 예수님이 우리에게 오셨다는 사실 앞에 자신을 들여다 보는 기회가 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 목사님들의 심방을 받고 고마워하는 성도님들을 봅니다. 하물며 예수님의 심방을 받은 크리스마스에 우리는 얼마나 더 감사해야 할까요?

저기 날아가는 새들처럼, 예수님이 우리에게 오신 기쁜 소식을 한보따리 들고 다녔으면 좋겠습니다. “기쁘다 구주 오셨네~” 찬양하는 소리가 예배당 안에만 머물지 않고, 세상 땅끝까지 울려 퍼졌으면 좋겠습니다. 올 한해도 예수님 때문에 행복하고, 예수님 때문에 감사하고, 예수님이 다시 일어나는 은혜가 넘쳤습니다. 12월 끄트머리에 크리스마스가 있는 이유가 이것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 아무리 어려웠고 힘들었던 한 해였다 해도 예수님 오신 크리스마스를 맞이하며, 우리와 함께 하셨던 예수님 때문에 다시 일어나라는 메시지가 있는 것 같습니다.

사랑하는 베델 성도 여러분, 메리 크리스마스! 늘 주 안에서 강건하시고, 우리 예수님 다시 오시는 그날까지 항상 주안에서 힘내어 달려가십시다. 주님 다시 오십니다. 그래서 다시 리-메리 크리스마스 할 날이 있으리라 믿습니다.

The Day Jesus Came, Will Come

At the year’s end, we are reminded of people we are grateful for. Since this is Christmas season when Jesus came, our hearts overflow with thankfulness during the month of December. Looking out to church parking lot filled with cars from my office brings smile. Seeing birds flying across golf course from the wildlife preserve adjacent to our church is like they are busy delivering grateful hearts. Blooming flower beds along the sides of path leading to church, sparkling trees in front of the main sanctuary shout “Merry Christmas!” They welcome all entering the sanctuary.

There was a concert in our main sanctuary last week by UCI’s choir and orchestra. They performed ‘Silent Night Holy Night’, ‘Noel Noel’. It was a time of praising with grateful hearts of Jesus who came. Many UCI professors also attended the concert. They were surprised that there was such a church so close to school. They expressed desire to use our facility again next year. We are thankful that, after being in Irvine for half a century, it was an opportunity to let our local community know of our existence.

It has been over 2000 years since Jesus came for us. However, there are many who still do not know of His existence. This is a good opportunity to examine ourselves reflecting on the fact that Jesus came for us, and not just an event for end of year celebration. Many church members appreciated home visitations by pastors. How much more should we be thankful for Jesus’ home visitation on Christmas?

Like those birds flying away, we need to deliver those bundles of joyful news of Jesus who came for us. “Joy to the World, the Lord is Come~” praise should ring out to the ends of the world not just in our sanctuary. We are happy this year because of Jesus. We are grateful because of Jesus. Blessings of His grace risen again overflowed. Perhaps this is the reason that Christmas is at the end of December. No matter how difficult and hard the year may have been, as we celebrate Christmas of Jesus’ coming, we rise up again because of the message that Jesus is always with us.
