천국은 죽어서만 가는 곳으로 알고 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 즐겨 부르는 찬송가에도 “할렐루야, 찬양하세 내 모든 죄 사함 받고 주 예수와 동행하니 그 어디나 하늘나라~” 부르며 현재 이 자리에서 누리는 천국을 찬양하고 있습니다. 저는 이렇게 말하고 싶습니다. ‘지금 이 자리에서 천국을 누리지 못하면 죽어서도 천국에 갈 수 없다.’ 왜냐하면 한 번도 경험해 보지못한 천국을, 죽어서 간들 누릴 수 없기 때문입니다. 한국에서 길치가 미국에서도 길치인 것처럼, 이 땅에서 천국을 찾지 못하는데, 하늘나라에 가서도 천국을 찾지 못하고 영원히 헤매지 않겠습니까?

그렇다면 우리는 ‘지금 내가 천국을 누리고 있느냐?’를 심각하게 질문해야 할 것입니다. 내가 지금도 천국을 찾아가는 길눈이 있느냐는 것입니다. 어린 자녀들이 엄마 아빠에게 묻습니다. “엄마, 천국은 어디 있어?” “아빠, 천국은 어떻게 가는 거야?” 천진난만하게 묻는 아이들에게 “천국은 죽으면 가는 곳이야” 대답하는 부모라면 아쉬움이 많습니다. 그래도 반은 맞았다고 주장하실 수 있지만, 천국의 현재를 누리지 못하는 자는 천국의 미래도 누릴 수 없습니다. “천국은 우리 집 같아” “천국은 우리 아들 딸이 있는 여기야” 라고 대답할 수 있는 부모가 진정한 의미의 천국 교사라 할 수 있습니다.

제가 늘 우리 교회 성도들에게 강조하는 것은 오늘 드리는 예배에서 천국의 예배를 맛볼 수 없다면, 결단코 천국에 가서도 예배 드릴 수 없다는 사실입니다. 그만큼 오늘의 삶 속에서 천국의 기쁨과 행복을 누릴 수 없다면, 죽어서도 결코 천국은 없습니다. 성경은 천국을 지금 현실과 단절된 나라로 가르치지 않습니다. 우리는 천국에 가서도 지금의 가족관계와 성도들을 알아봅니다. 하늘나라와 지금 내가 살고 있는 이곳은 연속선 안에 있습니다. 그래서 천국 가면 우리가 지금 이곳에 한 행위대로 심판 혹은 상을 받는 것입니다. (계 20:12-13).

성도님 중의 한 분이 이혼 상담을 해 오셨습니다. 한국과 미국에 살면서 인터넷이 없던 시절, 펜팔로 서로 일주일에 10통도 주고받으며 가끔 사진도 편지에 넣어서 받는 것으로 교제하다가 비행기 삯을 모아 미국에서 날아온 유대인 출신의 남편을 처음 만나 결혼했다고 합니다. 지금의 남편을 마중하기 위해 김포공항을 나갔던 그때의 마음을 이야기하는 아내는 눈물을 감추지 못합니다. 죽어서 가는 천국은 오늘도 천국을 누리는 자의 것입니다. 신혼여행을 떠나는 신랑 신부와 같은 맘으로 이 세상을 사는 자만이 천국에서 내 아내, 내 남편인 줄 서로 알아보고 진짜 천국을 누릴 것입니다.

Heaven Belongs to Those Who Enjoy

We know heaven as a place we go to when we die. However, one of the hymns we enjoy singing, “O hallelujah, yes, ’tis heaven. ‘Tis heaven to know my sins for-given; On land or sea, what matters where? Where Jesus is, ’tis Heaven there.” praises of heaven that we enjoy in our present place. This is what I would say, “Unless you can enjoy heaven in your present place, you cannot go to heaven when you die.” That is because, even if you would go to heaven, you cannot enjoy what you have not experienced.” If you are directionally challenged and often get lost driving in Korea, you would also get lost driving in America. As such, if you could not find heaven on earth, how are you going to find heaven in another world, you may be eternally searching?

The question that needs to be asked is “Am I enjoying heaven right now?” Another words, do you currently have your eyes set on direction to heaven. Growing up, young children ask their mom and dad, “Mom, where is heaven?” “Dad, how do you go to heaven?” It would give parents much regret if the answer to their children is “heaven is a place you go to when you die”. You may claim that it’s at least half true. But, if you can’t enjoy heaven in present time, you can’t enjoy heaven in the future. Parents who can answer “Heaven is like our home” “Heaven is here where my sons and daughters are~” are heavenly teachers in the true sense.

As I have always stressed to church congregation, if you can’t taste heavenly worship in today’s worship, the truth is you cannot worship in heaven. To that extent, if you cannot enjoy heavenly joy and happiness in your life today, there is no heaven even after death. Bible does not teach us that the world of peace is not separate from the current situation. We will see our family members and church members when we go to heaven. Heavenly Kingdom and the place that I live in now are in continuum. Therefore, when we go to heaven, we will be judged, or rewarded according to our actions in this place (Rev 20:12-13).

One of our church members came for a marriage counseling. Living in Korea and U.S. during the time when there was no internet, their relationship was built on exchanging over 10 letters a week and sending occasional pictures as pen pals. They met for the first time when her future husband of Jewish descent saved up enough for an airfare and flew over to Korea from U.S., and they got married. She could not hide her tears when she talked about how she felt when she went to meet her husband at Gimpo Airport. It’s unfortunate that I am currently counseling on divorce, but heaven that we will go to when we die belongs to those who can enjoy heaven today. Only those who live in this world with the hearts of newly married bride and groom going on a honeymoon will recognize their wife and husband in heaven. They will truly enjoy Heavenly Kingdom.
