교수들이 투표한 한 해를 정리하는 사자성어 중에 ‘후안무치(厚顔無恥-낯이 뜨거워 부끄러움을 모른다)’, ‘격화소양(隔靴搔癢-신발을 신고 가려운 곳을 긁는다)’를 제치고 1등으로 뽑힌 것이 ‘아시타비(我是他非-나는 옳고 남은 그르다)’였다고 합니다. 아시타비의 순 한국말이 바로 ‘내로남불’이며, 사실 이제 이 말은 국제어가 되었습니다. 작년에 한국의 서울과 부산 시장 선거에서 여당이 참패한 사건을 두고, 국민들이 내로남불(NaeRoNamBul)이라 했다고 뉴욕타임스는 보고 했습니다. 소리 나는 대로 영어로 기록한 후 ‘if they do it, it’s a romance if others do it, they call it an extramarital affair’이라는 설명까지 붙였습니다. ‘내가 하면 로맨스, 남이 하면 불륜’이라는 말이 한국에서 얼마나 많이 쓰였길래 한 해를 가늠하는 사자성어에 등장하고, 급기야 외국 신문에까지 회자되는 국제어가 되었습니다. 로맨스와 스캔들의 차이를 두고 남한테 안 들키면 로맨스이고, 들키면 스캔들이라고 했습니다.

자기를 지키기 위한 자기방어라는 명목으로 우크라이나를 향해 폭탄을 터뜨리는 러시아는 침략의 속내를 들켜 버린 내로남불의 전형입니다. 내로남불은 성경에도 버젓이 나와있습니다. 바리새인입니다. 내가 하면 의롭고 남이 하면 자랑한다고 하며, 내가 하면 박수 받을 일이고 남이 하면 비판할 일입니다. 내가 하는 일이 남들과는 다르다고 주장하는 성향 때문에 구분되었다는 의미의 히브리어 ‘파루쉬’에서 ‘바리새’라는 말이 파생되었다고 합니다.

바리새인은 남이 듣도록 이렇게 기도했다고 성경은 적고 있습니다. 바리새인과 세리가 함께 성전에 올라가 기도를 하는데 바리새인은 ‘하나님, 감사합니다. 나는 간음하는 자와 같지 않고 더구나 이 세리와도 같지 않습니다.’라고 기도했지만, 세리의 기도는 바리새인과 비교하지 않고 아니, 그들과 비교할 여유도 없이 하늘을 향해 눈도 들지 못하고 그저 가슴을 치며 ‘나를 불쌍히 여기소서’라고 기도했습니다. 이때 예수님께서는 바리새인을 향해 “너희가 아니라 너희가 죄인이라 조롱하는 이 세리가 의롭다 하시고 그의 집으로 내려갔다.”라고 하시면서 바리새인들에게 청천벽력과 같은 말씀을 하셨습니다. (눅 18장) 행동을 구별되게 하는 의로움은 마음의 반영이어야 한다는 말씀입니다. 스스로를 높이려고 했던 내로남불의 속내가 들켜 버린 바리새인들은 자기들이 제일 혐오하는 세리들과 비교당한 것도 몹시 불쾌한데 그것도 모자라 세리보다 못하다고 말씀하시는 주님 앞에서 그들의 자존심이 완전히 짓밟히고 속이 뒤집어진 것입니다. 그 주님은 우리를 향해서 바리새인의 의보다 낫지 않으면 천국에 들어가지 못한다고 하셨으니 (마 5:20) 이것이 우리의 딜레마입니다. 우리 역시 바리새인의 습관처럼 내가 못하면 회개하는 세리가 되고, 내가 좀 하면 의로운 바리새인이 되어 버리는 또 다른 내로남불의 변명을 늘어놓고 있지는 않은지 한 번쯤 생각해 볼 일입니다.

Naeronambul Dilemma

Among four-letter Chinese expressions that came up this year, number one voted by professors, above ‘Huanmuchi'(your face is so hot that you don’t realize the shame) and ‘gyukhwasoyang'(scratching an itch over shoe), was ‘ashitabi'(I’m right, others are wrong). Korean expression for ‘ashitabi is ‘naeronambul’, and this word has become international. New York Times reported last year that citizens were Naeronambul about devastating result of the ruling party on mayoral elections in city of Seoul and Busan. After the word in Korean, it was followed by an English explanation, ‘if I do it, it’s romance, if others do it, they call it an extramarital affair’. This expression ‘if I do it, it’s romance, if others do it, it’s an extramarital affair’ must have been used often enough that it even influenced four-letter Chinese expressions in the year, as well as becoming internationalized by being used in a foreign newspaper.

In the past, difference between romance and scandal was told that if it’s not caught, it’s romance; if it’s caught, it’s scandal. Bombing of Ukraine by Russia in the name of self-defense is exactly what naeronambul is. Naeronam bul also appears in the Bible. They are the Pharisees. If I do it, it’s righteous, if others do it, it’s boasting. If I do it, I should be praised; if others do it, they should be criticized. To distinguish the tendency to insist that what I do is different than others, Hebrew word ‘Pharisee’ was derived from ‘parouch’.

Bible records that Pharisees prayed loud so others can hear. A Pharisee and a tax collector went up to the temple to pray. Pharisee prayed, ‘Thank you, Lord, that I am not an adulterer or even like this tax collector’. On the contrary, the tax collector did not compare himself to the Pharisee. In fact, out of remorse, he couldn’t even look up to heaven. Instead, he beat his chest, praying ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner’. At that moment, Jesus spoke crushing words that it wasn’t the Pharisee, but it was the tax collector who was righteous. Having been justified, he went home. (Lu 18) Righteousness that distinguishes our actions must be reflected from our hearts. Pharisees’ naeronambul of self-elevation was uncovered. They were already unpleasant enough being compared to tax collector. To be told by Jesus that they are worse than a tax collector really flipped their egos. Jesus said, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(Matt 5:20) That is our dilemma. When I don’t do well, I become a repenting tax collector. If I do well, I become a righteous Pharisee. Thus, we too, like Pharisees, give excuses of yet another kind of naeronambul.
