이제 막 대학에 들어간 딸이 자기 조카가 유아세례를 받는다고 집에 왔습니다. 평소 언니를 그렇게 좋아하더니, 언니가 딸을 낳았을 때 조카를 안고 감격하며 울던 막내딸이었습니다. 기독교인들에게 정말 귀하고 영광스러운 것 중에 세례식은 단연코 제일로 꼽히는 것 중 하나입니다. 하나님의 가족으로 태어나는 순간이요, 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않은 아기를 하나님께 맡기며 말씀과 기도로 양육하겠다는 부모의 결단과 가족의 결심이 있는 날이기 때문입니다. 지난 주일 10명이 넘는 아기의 유아세례 때도, 평상시대로 축복하며 세례를 베풀었습니다. 그런데, 우리 손녀딸이 세례를 받는 순간에는 갑자기 양가 가족이 함께 마음 모아 기도하는 열기가 느껴지면서, 그 짧은 순간에 주마등 같은 하나님의 은혜가 영화 필름 돌아가듯 빛의 속도로 흘러갔습니다. “모든 것이 은혜, 은혜~” 찬양 가사에도 있듯이, 그 순간 위에서 내려오는 하나님의 임재를 다른 말로 설명할 길이 없었습니다. 철모르는 막내딸까지 먼 곳에서 기차 타고 와서 참여하는 유아 세례식은 그래서 더할 나위 없는 감사와 기쁨의 현장이 되었습니다.
오늘은 처음 우리 교회에 오신 분들이 비교적 많은 부활 주일입니다. 지나가는 손님들도 있으시고, 특별히 지인들의 초청으로 방문하고 계신 분들도 많습니다. 매년 부활절을 맞이할 때마다 같은 마음이지만, 오늘은 더욱 새롭고 신선한 기대로 충만한 날입니다. 일주일 전, 우리 손녀딸이 세례를 받았을 때보다 더 큰 감동이 기대되는 주일이기 때문입니다. 온 가족이 함께 모여 손녀딸의 세례를 지켜보듯이, 오늘은 하늘의 천군 천사들과 천국의 수많은 믿음의 선진들이 운동장을 가득 메운 것보다 더 많이 모여 축하하고 하나님께서 부어 주실 은혜가 있는 날이기 때문에 그렇습니다.
매년 부활절에는 삶은 달걀을 선물로 나누며 먹는 날이기도 합니다. 예쁜 병아리가 태어나는 달걀을 상상하며 새롭게 태어나는 생명을 상징하는 달걀입니다. 오늘 처음 오신 분들은 우리 교회에 그와 같은 선물이십니다. 진실된 마음으로 드리는 예배 속에 부활의 첫 열매 되신 예수님을 인격적으로 만나는 축복이 있기를 기도합니다.
조카의 유아 세례식에 참여하고 다시 학교로 돌아가는 막내딸을 기차역으로 데려다주는데, 듣고 싶은 음악이 있다며 자기 셀폰을 자동차 안의 스테레오와 블루투스로 연결해서 노래 한 곡을 틀었는데 저는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그 노래가 프랭크 시나트라의

My youngest daughter, who just started 1st year of college, came home for her niece’s Infant Baptism. She has always been very fond of her older sister. When older sister gave birth to a daughter, younger one held the baby in her arms and was moved to tears. Younger one came home to witness her niece’s Infant Baptism. One of the most precious and glorious events for Christian is Baptism. It is a moment that you are born into God’s family, and entrust your most precious child to God. You vow to raise the child in the Word and prayers. It is a family’s day of commitment. This past Lord’s Day, 10 babies were baptized. It was like any other baptism as I blessed them. However, when it came to my granddaughter’s baptism, feeling the power of prayers from both sides of the families, in that short moment, I felt God’s grace flowing through as if passing street lamps at a speed of light, like a movie. As the lyrics of a praise song that says “All is grace, grace~”, there was no way to explain God’s presence at that moment. This Infant Baptism, with my youngest daughter who traveled on a train to attend, made that moment even more grateful and joyful.
Today is Easter. There are more first-time visitors coming to church than other Sundays. Some of you are visitors passing through. Many of you have received invitations to come. It seems the same every Easter. Today, however, feels refreshed and filled with high expectations. That is because of the expectation that this Lord’s Day, as God pours His grace on us, will move us in greater ways than when my granddaughter was baptized a week ago. Like families gathered to witness a granddaughter being baptized, there will be gathering of great multitudes of heavenly angels and faithful forefathers, more than enough to fill a stadium, to receive God’s grace on this day.
Every Easter we share hard boiled eggs. As we imagine pretty chicks hatching, these eggs represent new life. All of you attending our church for the first time are like these gifts. I pray that, as we worship with sincere hearts, you will meet Jesus in person, the first fruit of resurrection.
