동부에서 살다가 캘리포니아에 처음 이사 왔을 때, 이삿짐이 미처 도착하지 않아 이불 없이 맨바닥에서 잤다가 추워서 얼어 죽을 뻔했던 기억이 납니다. 지금도 여전히 겨울이 되면 냉기 도는 실내의 오싹함에 그때의 느낌이 되살아나곤 합니다. 이번 이스라엘 여행도 가장 날씨가 좋다는 3월임에도 불구하고, 100년 만의 이상 기온으로 여행 내내 추위에 떨며 다녔습니다.

팬데믹으로 그동안 가지 못했던 부흥 집회를 비로소 가게 되면서, 지난주 처음으로 애틀랜타에 갔습니다. 그런데 이게 웬일입니까? 그 따뜻한 애틀랜타 조차 추웠습니다. 왜 이렇게 추위가 저를 쫓아오는지 좀 따뜻한 게 없나 찾다가 이번에 애틀랜타에서 너무나도 가슴 훈훈해지는 따뜻한 이야기를 만났습니다. 식사 대접을 해 주셨던 집사님이 자원 봉사하시는 일이었는데, 한국의 라미현(Rami Hyun) 사진작가가 6.25 전쟁에 참전했던 22개국의 참전 용사들을 찾아다니면서 사진을 찍어, 액자에 넣어 선물하는 일이었습니다. 우리나라를 위해 목숨 걸고 싸워 주었던 군인들을 찾아가 “우리나라를 위한 헌신에 고맙습니다.”라는 마음을 전하며 사진을 건네줄 때마다 다들 눈시울이 뜨거워지고, 한결같이 대한민국을 향한 사랑과 자부심을 나타냈다고 합니다. 애틀랜타에 사는 노먼 보드 미 해병대 장진호 참전용사는 사진을 받으며 이렇게 말했답니다. ‘페라리, 포르셰, 람보르기니, 벤틀리 다 타 봤지만, 그중에 제일이 기아 텔루 라이드였다’ 그러면서 계속 ‘텔루라이드 최고!’를 외쳤다는 것입니다. 처음에는 인사말인 줄 알았는데, 정말 그의 집에 가보니 그 모든 차가 있었고 자기가 타 본 차 중에 텔루라이드 만한 차가 없다고 했답니다. 자원 봉사하시는 이 집사님은 라미현 사진작가에게서 사진을 파일로 받아 인쇄를 하고 액자에 넣어 참전용사가 모이는 챕터 모임에 가서 전달하는데 그때마다 아이들과 함께 가서, 우리나라를 위해 목숨 걸고 헌신해 주셔서 감사하다는 말씀을 전한다고 합니다. 참전용사들은, 싸우는 것이 아니라 대한민국과 그 국민들의 생명을 지키는 것처럼 보람 있는 일은 없었다고 하시며, 도리어 잊지 않고 찾아와 주어 고맙다는 따뜻한 인사를 해 주신다고 합니다. 많은 분이 사진액자를 받으며 “How much is this, 이거 얼마냐?”라고 묻는데 그때마다 “69년 전에 이미 지불하셨습니다.”라고 대답한다고 합니다. 참전 용사의 숨은 이야기를 들으면서 역사의 기록에 남겨야겠다는 비전을 가지고 책이 출판되었는데, 그 책 제목이 <69년 전에 이미 지불하셨습니다>입니다.

이제 고난 주간이 다가옵니다. 오늘 우리가 여기에 있는 이유는, 주님께서 “2000년 전에 이미 지불” 하셨기 때문입니다.

Full Payment Made 69 Years Ago

I still remember how cold it was when we first moved to California from the East, and we suffered tremendously because we had to sleep on the cold floor without any blankets since our luggage bags were delayed. The cold winter reminds me of those days even now. We recently visited Israel because it is well-known that March is the best time to visit with beautiful warm weather. But to our surprise, it was so cold with such abnormal temperatures that happens only once in a 100 years.

Last week, I had a chance to lead a Revival service for the first time since the corona pandemic, and I visited the city of Atlanta with expectation of a nice and warm weather. But to my disappointment, it was cold even in Atlanta. While I was seeking for a warm and cozy thoughts, I came across a very warming story while in Atlanta. And it was a story of a volunteering episode by a deacon who offered a meal. The volunteer work involved seeking out and visiting the Korean War (6.25) veterans from some 22 countries who were on the pictures taken by a famous Korean photographer named Rami Hyun. Whenever he meets those veterans, he offered the framed pictures as a gift and shared, “thank you for your service and dedication for risking your life to save our country.” And each time, the pictures were gifted with heart filled gratitude, they all shared tears and could not hide their love and pride for Korea. One veteran who lives in Atlanta named Norman Board, U.S. Marine stationed in Chosin Reservoir (Changjin-ho) stated, “I drove a Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley, but The BEST car is Kia Telluride…” and he continued to exclaim, “Telluride is the Best of the BEST!” At first, he thought it was just a nice gesture. But when he visited Mr. Board’s house, he could not believe that he actually owned all those cars, and revealed that from all the cars he drove, no car can outperform Telluride. So the volunteering deacon continued to share whenever he gets a download of the pictures of Rami Hyun, he would print out and frame the pictures of the veterans. He then visits various Veteran Chapters with children to express the gratitude for their service to our country. And every time, a warm heart is all around not ashamed of expressing that safe-guarding Korea and preserving the lives of Korean people was the most worthy cause. And then they are the ones grateful for remembering them with the special framed pictures. And many of them even asked, “How much is this picture?” And each time, the answer is the same, that “the payment was already made 69 years ago.”

A book was written with a vision to record the history after listening to so many hidden stories of those brave Korean War veterans, and the book is entitled, .The week of Christ’s suffering is just around the corner. And we should remember the real reason why we are here today, that is because Jesus already “made the payment in full some 2000 years ago.”
