코로나 사태가 터지고, 건강과 생명의 우선 순위 앞에 사회 경제 문화 등 모든 분야의 활동이 정지되고, 심지어 교회도 함께 모이지 못하며 온라인으로 예배 드린지 벌써 3개월이 넘어가고 있습니다. 코로나라는 시대적 난제를 함께 극복하기 위해서 불편해도 서로를 배려하고 사회적 격리와 행동 제재, 심지어 모든 경제적 활동 봉쇄까지 감수하고 있지만, 이 기간이 길어지 면서 우리는 새로운 국면을 맞고 있습니다. 건강과 생명을 지키기 위한 모든 조치들이 이제는 또 다른 면으로 우리의 건강과 안녕을 위협하고 있기 때문입니다. 요즘은 응급 상태가 아니면 병원에 갈 수도 없습니다. 코로나 이후 닥칠 경제 위기는 더 심각한 사회적 구조의 근간을 파괴함으로, 겉잡을 수 없는 혼란을 야기할 것이라고 예측하고 있습니다.

교회도 예외는 아닙니다. 이미 온라인 예배로 진행된 모든 교회는, 재정적으로 25%에서 50%으로 헌금이 급격히 줄어들었습니다. 모든 사역들이 멈춰진 상태에서 지출 또한 줄었기 때문에 어느 정도 유지되고 있는 것 같지만, 코로나 이후에 사역을 다시 코로나 이전의 역동적인 상태로 회복하기 까지는 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸리리라 생각합니다. 코로나 이후 예상되는 주요한 변화는, 본질적인 사역에 대한 재 조명일 것입니다. 위기 상황에서도 필수적인 것들은 그 자리를 지킵니다. 마찬가지로 교회 역시 모든 사역이 취소되거나 축소되어도 가장 중요하고도 본질적인 것들은 끝까지 간다는 것입니다.

예배가 온라인으로 전환되어 이제는 어색함과 불편함이 해소되고 나름 정착되어 가는 이 즈음에 한가지 분명히 깨닫는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 온라인 예배가 결코 함께 모여 드리는 공중예배를 대체할 수 없다는 것입니다. 동시에 교회에 찾아온 시대적 도전은, 온라인 예배에 적응해 가고 있는 성도들을 다시 오프라인으로 끌어내는 일입니다. 한국이나 미국이나 이미 소비자적 성향에 익숙한 성도들에게는, 온라인예배로 전환되면서 예배 또한 온라인 마켓이 열린 것입니다. 물론 설교를 위시해서 내용물들이 온라인 예배에서 더 알차졌다는 유익은 있습니다. 특별히 자녀들을 위한 신앙자료들 은 사역자들이 더욱 책임있게 준비하게 되었고, 자녀들과 부모님들도 오 프라인 때보다 관심과 집중력이 훨씬 좋아진 것은 부인할 수 없습니다. 그러나, 온라인 예배에는 개인화되는 부작용이 따릅니다. 예배는, 자기가 듣고 싶은 노래를 자기 취향대로 골라 즐기는 자기만의 시간같은 것이 아닙니다. 예배는 성령 안에서 공동체 인식을 공유하며 ‘함께 지어져 가는’ 현장 입니다 (엡 2:22). 그리스도의 장성한 분량의 충만한 자리까지 자라가는 세팅은 취사선택이 자유로운 취미생활이 아니라, 만나서 부딪치고 깎이고 다듬어지는 교회라는 유기적 공동체 세팅입니다. 보기 싫은 성도들이 있어도, 악수하기 불편한 교우가 있어도 함께 하는 예배를 통해 성장해 가는 공동체가 교회입니다. 온라인 예배로 가정을 신앙적으로 세우는 일에 등한히 했던 부모의 주요 임무를 되찾는 유익도 있었지만, 교회라는 ‘공동체 의식’ 을 회복하는 숙제 또한, 코로나 이후 오프라인 예배에 주어진 사명입니다.

After Coronavirus(3) – Community Awareness

Placing priority on health and life, it has been 3 months of online worship, not being able to come together as a church since halting every aspect of society, economy, and culture in the face of Coronavirus crisis. In order to overcome Coronavirus crisis together, although uncomfortable, we are taking measures to protect others, social isolation and sanctions, blocking all economic activities. We are facing a new phase as duration of this measures are lengthened. All these measures we took to safeguard our health and life are now threatening our wellbeing in a different way. Currently, we can’t go to hospital unless it’s an emergency. It is predicted that the economic crisis we will face after Coronavirus will destroy the foundation of social structure causing uncontrolled chaos.

Church is not an exception. All of the churches conducting online services have had their offerings reduced to 25%-50%. Since all of the ministries have been halted, expenditures have been reduced and this helped to sustain. However, I think it will take a long time for ministries to return to its vibrancy after Coronavirus. We can predict that the main change we will see after Coronavirus is to refocus on the nature of the ministry. Essential things will remain in their places even in crisis situation. In the same way with church, even if all the ministries have scaled back, the most important essential things will continue to the end.

As worship moved to online, we have adjusted and no longer feel uncomfortable or strange. There is one thing that we have definitely come to realize. It is that the online worship can never replace worshiping together as a community. At the same time, now the challenge to church is how to draw congregation back from comforts of online worship to offline worship. In Korea and US, due to consumer preference, a market is formed for online worship for congregations who have become familiar moving into online worship. Since moving to online, there is a benefit of more quality-packed contents, including sermons. Especially when it comes to material for our children’s faith, pastors are preparing them more responsibly and we cannot deny the fact that students have become more interested and focused, even parents. But, there is the side effect of online worship becoming too individualized. Worship is not an individual time like choosing and enjoying one’s own music. Worship is about sharing community awareness in the Spirit and a place where ‘you are being built together’ (Eph 2:22). Setting up to grow into the maturity of Christ is not a free choice like a hobby, but it is a setting up of gathering and being molded and shaped as a community called church. No matter how much you want to avoid someone, or feel uncomfortable to shake hands with someone, coming together to worship and mature as a community is church. Through online worship, there were benefits of parents discovering their responsibility of raising their family in faith. But, one of the missions given to offline worship after Coronavirus is to restore community awareness called church.
