The Influence of a Christian

All of our children live close by. Whether it’s our married daughter or married sons, they all live within a distance where they can come over right away if called. Only our youngest daughter, who is not yet married, lives with us. Although all the others have moved out, thankfully, everyone lives nearby. Thankfully, whenever we miss our grandchildren and call them over for a meal, they come running right away. Last week, I suddenly missed the kids and organized a quick meetup. Since everyone wanted to eat different foods, we first gathered at a food court. Rather than cooking at home in the hot summer, gathering like this allowed us to enjoy some well-deserved family time. After gathering, I noticed that only our second son’s family, who lives in LA, couldn’t make it. I thought it might have been tough for him to come down just for a quick meal, but as it turned out, it was his wedding anniversary, so he was already having dinner at a planned location. On one hand, I felt proud of my son, who has now become a respectable father, but on the other hand, I felt sorry that he couldn’t join us for the family gathering.
During the meal, a conversation started about who used to get scolding the most. The eldest son said he got scolded the most, and everyone was busy sharing old memories with laughter. However, everyone then started talking about a story of the second son getting scolded—a story that, regardless of any other, always makes me feel humble and embarrassed. I remembered because it was a time when I struck my son out of anger after he playfully teased our youngest daughter and made her cry. My second son was probably in high school at the time. My second son, who was always kind and quiet, ended up suffering an unfair blow out of the blue from his father because of his crying youngest sister. That day, I sincerely apologized to my second son and asked, “Please forgive Dad.” At that time, my second son silently nodded his head, giving me his forgiveness. I promised him that I would never lose my temper and scold him like that again, and I held my son tightly in a long hug.
I was very surprised that all of our children still remembered what happened back then. Fortunately, they also remembered that their father had asked for their forgiveness. Looking back now, it was God’s grace that gave me the courage at that moment to sincerely apologize to my children and ask for forgiveness. Last weekend, listening to the lecture and sermon under the theme ‘Illuminating the Era of Uncertainty,’ we received many realizations and challenges. The grace given to our family was truly great. It seems that a true parent’s influence comes not from being a perfect parent, but rather from being a parent who repents of their mistakes and seeks forgiveness first.
