말 한마디에 천 냥 빚을 갚는다는 옛말이 있습니다. 말만 잘해도 있던 빚도 사라지는 이득을 볼 수 있다는 말의 소중함과 능력을 일깨워주는 속담입니다. 또 다른 속담에서 ‘아 다르고 어 다르다’ 즉 표현하는 방법에 따라 듣는 사람의 기분이 달라지는 것입니다. 우리는 얼마 전 우크라이나 대통령과 트럼프 대통령이 백악관에서 회담하며 거친 표현들이 쏟아지는 것을 보며 많이 놀랐습니다. 저도 개인적으로 두나라 원수들이 만나 이런 식의 설전을 벌이는 것은 본 적이 없습니다. 회담이 결렬된 후 손님을 안방으로 초대해 놓고, 너무 몰아쳤다는 우크라이나 동정론과 우리 미국 국민의 엄청난 세금을 자국 방어를 위해 당연한 듯이 가져갔으면서 고마운 줄 모른다는 배신감이 팽팽하게 맞섭니다. 두 정상이 실황 중계하는 카메라 앞에서 여과 없이 쏟아내는 말들에 너무 놀라 가슴을 쓸어내려야만 했습니다. 가장 외교적이어야 하는 순간에 “당신들이 러시아와 무슨 외교를 했느냐” 약속을 밥 먹듯이 어긴 러시아를 비판하며 협상테이블에 앉기 전 안전보장을 해달라는 우크라이나 대통령, “당신은 우리 미국 없으면 쓸 수 있는 패(cards)가 없다”며 지난 3년간 도와준 미국에 고마워해야 한다는 미국 대통령의 말들이 모든 뉴스를 도배하고 말았습니다. 미국의 실리 챙기기를 우선으로 하는 트럼프 대통령의 선거 약속과 그의 특유한 비지니스 협상 방법이 실효를 거둔다고 평가받는 중, 늘 평복을 입는 우크라이나 대통령에게 “정장은 없느냐? 왜 안 입느냐?” 마치 예의범절도 모른다는 식으로 약한 나라의 자존심을 건드리는 질문도 너무도 안타까운 장면이었습니다. 소위 관세 폭탄을 맞은 캐나다 총리는 기자들 앞에서 트럼프 대통령을 타이틀 없이 ‘도널드’라 칭하며 ‘그가 한 행동은 dumb(멍청한 짓)’이라고 했습니다. 정말 총 칼 없이 말로 싸우는 모습을 보면서, 저의 생각은 하나였습니다. “크리스천답지 못하다!”

미국 버지니아주에서 카페를 운영하는 오스틴 심스씨가 운영하는 카페 메뉴판에 가격표를 이렇게 올렸습니다. “작은 커피 하나 $5, 작은 커피 하나 주세요 $3불, 안녕하세요, 작은 커피 하나 주실래요? $1.75” 손님들이 종업원에게 주문하는 말의 태도에 따라 가격을 차별하면서 말의 예의를 갖출 것을 원하는 주인의 의도를 읽을 수 있습니다. 우리 말에도 “가는 말이 고와야 오는 말도 곱다” “말이 고우면 비지사러 갔다가 두부 사 온다”는 말이 있습니다. 다시 한번 야고보서의 말씀을 상기합니다. “샘이 한 구멍으로 어찌 단 물과 쓴 물을 내겠느뇨. 내 형제들아 어찌 무화과나무가 감람 열매를, 포도나무가 무화과를 맺겠느뇨 이와 같이 짠 물이 단 물을 내지 못하느니라.”(약 3:11-12)

Unchristian like Words!

There is an old saying that goes what you say can forgive a thousand Yang (old Korean money) debt. It’s a saying that awakens us to the importance and power of well-spoken words. It can even have the benefit of removing your debt. Another saying, ‘Ah is different than Uh.’ The manner of one’s expression can change the listener’s moods. A few days ago, we were shocked to hear harsh words coming out of the White House between Ukraine President Zelensky and President Trump. I personally have never seen two heads of state battle out in words like that. After breakdown of talk, the guest was invited to the Oval Office. Sense of betrayal was palpable as people argued over sympathy for Ukraine and ungratefulness of Ukrainians for taking exorbitant amount of U.S. tax money to defend their country. Unfiltered words pouring out of these two leaders in front of a live camera was shocking, and I needed to calm my heart. In the moment of what should be an utmost diplomacy, Ukraine President criticized Russia for constant unkept promises and said, “What kind of diplomacy have you had with Russia?” He asked for guaranteed safety before sitting down at a negotiation table. President of U.S. said, “Without U.S., you don’t have the cards” and that Ukraine should be grateful for U.S.’s support for the last three years. All these words were plastered all over the news. It was frustrating to see that, while President Trump was being evaluated for his campaign promises to prioritize America’s interest and his unique business negotiation skills, Trump asked Ukraine President, who is always casually dressed, “Do you not have a suit? Why do you not wear them?” It seemed like questions to bruise the pride of a weak nation. Prime Minister of Canada, when his country was hit with tariffs, called out President Trump ‘Donald’ without the proper title in front of media and said, ‘What he did was dumb.’ I had one thought as I watched them fight without guns or swords but with words. “They are unchristian like!”

Austin Simms who owns a café in Virginia posted his café menu with a pricelist. “One small coffee $5, One small coffee, please $3, Hello, I’d like one small coffee please? $1.75. The owner’s intention clearly asks for good manners as the price varies according to the way a customer speaks to the worker. We also have a saying that goes “If you speak nicely, you will hear nice words in return.” And, “If you go to buy leftover ground up soybeans and speak nicely, you will get tofu instead.” We are reminded once again of the words in James. “Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.” (James 3:11-12)
