지난주, 캘리포니아에는 80년 만에 허리케인을 예고하였습니다. 지구 온난화의 가속으로 허리케인 ‘힐러리’가 캘리포니아를 강타한다는 소식에 많은 사람이 긴장하고 대비하였습니다. 특히나 주일에 예보된 허리케인 소식에 베델교회는 성도님들이 최대한 안전하게 예배를 드릴 수 있도록 만반의 준비를 했습니다. 그러나 참 감사하게도 예배드리는데 어려움이 없이 가볍게 지나갔습니다.

세계에서 악명높은 태풍을 꼽으라면 1979년 서태평양의 폰페이섬 부근에서 발생한 태풍 팁으로 크기 2220km, 최대풍속 305km/h에 달하는 강력한 태풍으로 홍수와 산사태 등 수많은 사상자와 부상자를 냈던 최악의 태풍 중의 하나로 기록되며 이 기록은 30여 년 동안 깨지지 않고 있다고 합니다. 이렇게 무시무시한 태풍이 휩쓸고 지나간 자리는 폐허가 되고, 그 태풍을 벗어나려고 하면 할수록 태풍의 소용돌이에 처절하게 내쳐지게 됩니다.

우리들의 삶은 어떻습니까? 여름만 되면 찾아오는 태풍과 같이 늘 때가 되면 왔다가 모든 것을 파괴하고 흔들고 삶이 폐허가 되지는 않는지요? 인간의 삶이란 늘 고통이 따릅니다. 지혜자나 우둔한 자나 부유한 자나 가난한 자나 건강한 자나 약한 자나 인간은 늘 삶에 고난이라는 태풍을 만나게 됩니다. 그럴 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 태풍의 눈이라고 불리는 곳이 있습니다. 이곳은 정말 신비로운 곳입니다. 태풍의 중심부로 비바람과 돌풍이 거센 중에 하늘의 맑음과 안개가 없는 정적인 상태를 유지합니다. 이 태풍의 눈을 묵상하며 폭풍과 같은 우리의 삶을 우리의 힘으로 헤쳐 나가려고 할 때는 그 소용돌이에 휩쓸려 버리고 맙니다. 그 결과는 폐허이고 참담합니다. 폭풍과 같이 밀려드는 삶의 고난 속에도 태풍의 눈과 같은 예수님을 바라볼 때 우리에게 진정한 안식이 있을 줄로 믿습니다.

예수님이 제자들에게 배를 타고 갈릴리 바다 건너편으로 가자고 말했을 때의 일입니다. 사나운 폭풍이 이는 바다에서 모든 사람이 어쩔 줄 몰라 하고 있을 때 예수님은 편안하게 잠들어 계셨습니다. 그걸 본 제자들은 “예수께서는 고물에서 베개를 베고 주무시더니 제자들이 깨우며 이르되 선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까 하니” (막4:38) 그러나 예수님은 바람을 꾸짖어 바다를 잠잠하게 하셨습니다. “예수께서 깨어 바람을 꾸짖으시며 바다더러 이르시되 잠잠하라 고요하라 하시니 바람이 그치고 아주 잔잔하여지더라”(막4:39)

Eye of the Storm: God’s Grace in the Midst of Hurricane

Last week, for the first time in 80 years, there was a hurricane warning in California. It was a news that, in the midst of global warming, Hurricane Hillary was going to hit California, causing people to become nervous and prepared. On Lord’s Day, as the news of hurricane was announced, we prepared everything we could to safeguard our Bethel members to worship. Thankfully, there were no issues with worship. The storm lightly passed by.

If we were to pick the most notorious typhoon in the world, it would be the 1979 Typhoon Tip near Pohnpei island in Micronesia. Cyclone of the typhoon was measured at 2220km(1379.4miles) with wind speed of 305km/h(190mph). It was recorded that this powerful typhoon caused massive flooding and mudslides, taking many lives and injuring people. This record has not been broken over 30 years. Places where this scary typhoon passed through were left in ruins. The more you try to get out of the storm, further you just get swept up into the vortex of the typhoon.

What about our lives? Like typhoons in summer, do we have storms in our lives that come and destroy everything, leaving our lives in ruins? Life is always followed by suffering. Whether we are an intellectual or not, wealthy or poor, healthy or frail, our lives are met with typhoons of sufferings. When this happens, what are we to do? There is a place called the eye of the storm. This is an amazing place. It is the very center of the storm where state of stillness is maintained without clouds and fog in the midst of powerful winds and rains. As we think upon the eye of storm, when we try to live our lives by our own strengths, we are only swept further into the vortex of the storm. The result is utter ruins. When we look to Jesus, who is like the eye of storm, we find a true comfort while life’s suffering hits us like a typhoon.

An episode happened when Jesus told His disciples to go across the Sea of Galilee on a boat. They didn’t know what to do when a fierce storm arose. But, Jesus was fast asleep. “Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”(Mk 4:38) Jesus rebuked the wind and calmed the sea. “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”(Mk 4:39)
