호주 멜버른으로 가는 길은 길고도 멀었습니다. 마침 한국은 추석 황금연휴라 수많은 사람들이 해외로 빠져 나가며 공항은 북새통이었습니다. 그러나, 긴 여행에 좋은 영화 [Young Woman and the Sea]를 기내에서 보았습니다. 뉴욕에서 정육점 하는 독일 이민자의 딸로 태어난 트루디 수영선수가 영국해협을 여성 최초로 수영으로 건너는 사건을 영화화 한 것입니다. 트루디는 어렸을 때부터 언니와 물에서 노는 것을 좋아했고, 딸의 잠재력을 알아본 어머니의 격려로 여성수영팀(Women’s Swimming Association)에서 정식으로 수영을 배우게 됩니다. 그 이후 많은 수영대회에서 우승을 하면서 급기야 1924년 파리올림픽에 국가 대표로 참가하게 됩니다. 그러나, 남성만의 스포츠로 여겨졌던 잉글리쉬 채널 횡단을 꿈꾸며 마침내 도전하게 됩니다. 첫번째 시도에서 지독한 편견을 가지고 있던 남자 코치의 방해로 좌절되었지만, 다시 두 번째 횡단을 시도합니다. 비록 물은 차고, 수영하는 도중 해파리 떼들도 만나고, 영국 해안을 다가갔을 때는 어두움 속에 방향도 잃고 도중하차의 위기에 봉착합니다. 깜깜한 바다 한가운데 혼자 남은 트루디 역시 패닉이 몰려옵니다. 그때, 트루디는 상징적인 한 행동을 합니다. 수영하며 방향을 잡아주던 수경을 버립니다. 낮에는 유용했던 수경이, 칠흑 같이 어두운 밤바다에서는 무용지물이었습니다. 그 순간이었습니다. 갑자기 저 멀리서 불빛이 보입니다. 라디오 방송을 듣고 있던 사람들이 해변으로 몰려나와 장작불을 태우면서 혹시 방향을 잃어버렸을 트루디를 응원한 것입니다. 방향을 잡은 트루디는 드디어 여성으로 처음으로 영국해협을 14 시간 31분의 기록으로 건너게 됩니다. 그 이후, 미국의 영웅이 되어 뉴욕으로 돌아왔을 때, 그녀를 환영하는 뉴욕시민의 기록적인 환영인파는 아직도 깨지지 않는 최대의 인파였다고 합니다.

우리 인간은 계속해서 도전합니다. 높은 산을 등정하는 도전, 바다를 맨몸으로 건너는 도전 등, 끊임없는 도전에 성공하기 위해 체력을 준비하고, 모든 장비를 갖추고, 재정과 후원도 준비합니다. 그러나, 결국 마지막 성공의 열쇠는 우리 안에 있는 것이 아니라, 우리 밖에 있는 것입니다. 트루디 선수의 역량과 용기가 대단하지만, 마지막 순간에 불빛이 그녀를 성공하게 하였듯이, 오늘도 우리에게 다가오는 수많은 도전을 뚫고 해협 건너편에 우뚝 설 수 있는 근원은 하나님께로부터 온다는 사실입니다. “내가 아니라, 하나님입니다.” 오늘도 직장을 향하여 출발하는 모든 일꾼들, 내일을 꿈꾸며 가방을 챙기고 학교를 가는 우리 자녀들에게도 바다를 건너게 하는 마지막 불빛이 필요합니다. 그리고 나를 지켜주었다고 믿는 수경을 바다에 버리듯, 이제는 하나님의 불빛을 보고 거친 바다를 헤엄쳐 갑니다.

Flight to Melbourn, Australia, was long and far. Korea was celebrating autumn’s golden holiday at the same time. Lots of people were traveling to foreign countries making airport very crowded. During this long trip, I watched a nice movie called [Young Woman and the Sea]. This movie was about Trudy, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Trudy is a daughter of a German immigrant who had a butcher shop in New York. Since young age, Trudy loved to play in water with her sister. Recognizing her talent, her mother encouraged her to take formal lessons from Women’s Swimming Association. Since then, she excelled in swimming competitions and eventually participated in Paris Olympic in 1924 as the national team member. However, she dreams of crossing the English Channel, which was thought to be a male sport. Finally, she takes on the challenge. On her first try, she was frustrated by interference of an extremely prejudiced male coach and failed. She attempts to cross the second time. The water was cold. She comes across a school of jelly fish. When she comes closer to the coast of England, she loses direction in darkness and faces the risk of giving up midway. Trudy, left alone in darkness in the middle of the ocean, begins to panic. At that moment, Trudy takes a dramatic action. She throws away her goggles that helped her with direction. Goggles that was useful during the day was useless in pitchblack night ocean. It was at that moment, that suddenly she sees a light in the distance. People listening to her radio broadcasting came out to beach and made bonfires to cheer Trudy and help with direction. After finding her direction, Trudy finishes swimming the English Channel in record 14 hours and 31 minutes as the first woman ever to cross. When she returned to New York as an American hero, the recorded number of New York citizens came out to welcome her. It is said to be the largest crowd ever, yet to be broken.

We, humans, continue to challenge ourselves. We challenge to climb high mountains, challenge to cross the ocean with just bare body. To succeed in these endless challenges, we prepare our body, gather all equipment, and prepare finance and support. However, the final key to success is not within us, but it is outside of ourselves. Although, athlete Trudy’s ability and courage were amazing, at the final moment, it was the lights that brought her success. As such, the source that enables us to stand tall across the strait, overcoming the countless challenges that confront us today, is God. “It is not I, but God.” To all those workers leaving for work this morning, and our children going to school with backpacks dreaming of tomorrow, we all need this final light to help us cross. We throw away the trusted goggles that we believed protected us in the ocean and, now, look to God’s light and swim through the rough waters.
