저희 베델교회는 항상 엘리야 특별 새벽기도회(엘새)로 한 해를 엽니다. 우리 교회만 신년 새벽 기도회를 하는 것은 아니지만, 특별히 베델교회의 엘새는 여러 면에서 의미가 있습니다. 당연히 그 첫 번째는 온 교회가 기도로 새해를 여는 신호탄이라는 것입니다. 한 해 동안 진행되는 베델의 모든 모임 중에 가장 많은 성도가 힘을 다해서 모이는 기도회입니다. 그뿐만 아니라, 모든 세대가 새해에 우리에게 주시는 하나의 비전으로 참여하며 그 열기를 더합니다. 온 가족이 언어와 문화를 뛰어넘어 함께 하는 이민교회의 숙제를 모범적으로 풀어내는 베델교회는, 올해 처음 “큐티인” 교재로 모든 세대가 같은 본문으로 새벽기도를 시작했습니다. 큐티 교재 영문본의 미흡함을 최대한 보완하여 자녀를 위한 큐티인 영문본이 새롭게 시작된 것은 이민 교회 역사의 큰 장을 열게 된 것이라 믿습니다.

둘째, 본질을 잃지 않고 한 영혼을 향한 구령의 열정을 불태우는 초지일관의 엘새라는 것입니다. 올해로 9년째 우리는 “한 사람이, 한 영혼을, 하나님께, 아멘”을 외치고, VIP를 향한 우리의 기도를 쉬지 않고 있습니다. 그 열매로 현재 베델교회를 잘 섬기고 계시는 분들이 많이 있습니다. 천하보다 귀한 한 영혼이 주님께로 돌아오는 일을 위해 신년 꼭두새벽부터 함께 모여 외치는 구호는 단순한 구호가 아니라, 구령을 향한 외침입니다.

셋째, 선한 사업의 신호탄으로 새해를 여는 의미가 있습니다. 새해 첫 헌금을 선교지를 위해 향기 나는 예물로 드리며 출발하는 것은 우리 교회의 자랑이며, 기쁨입니다. 올해도 엘새 감사헌금 2만여 불을 선교 현장의 다음 세대를 위해 흘려보냈습니다. 한국의 탈북자 자녀들을 위한 장학 헌금, 터키에 유학하고 있는 아프리카 학생들을 위한 생활 보조 그리고, 키르기스스탄에 이제 막 문을 연 ‘방과 후 학교’의 학생들을 위해, 또한 캄보디아 뉴 호프 학교 학생들이 맘껏 뛰놀 수 있는 운동장을 위해 드릴 수 있었습니다.

넷째, 이번에도 팬데믹 가운데 열린 두 번째 엘새였지만, 작년은 현장이 아닌 온라인으로 최대의 성도들이 함께 참여했었고, 올해는 가장 많은 성도의 뜨거운 기도 열기가 있었습니다. My One Prayer에 가장 많은 기도 요청 제목들이 올라왔다는 것은, 올해 모토처럼 ‘더 깊이’ 엎드려 무릎 꿇게 하시는 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 열기로 뜨거웠던 시간임을 보여주었습니다. 이미 기도응답의 열매가 맺히고 있으며, 계속되는 하나님의 은혜가 더 깊이 엎드려 기도하는 무릎에 임하고 있습니다.

‘한 해의 성패는 엘새에 달렸다’고 해도 틀리지 않습니다. 지금까지도 그랬습니다. 특별히 2022년은 온 세대가 큐티와 더 깊은 기도로 믿음의 심도를 더하고, 전도와 선교로 가장 중요한 본질로 출발하였습니다. 교회를 교회 되게 하는 주의 영광이 충만한 한 해가 될 것을 믿습니다

Reason for Opening the New Year with Special Early Morning Prayer Service

Bethel Church has always begun new year with Elijah Early Morning Prayer Service. Although we are not the only church that does this, Elijah Prayer has special meaning in various ways for Bethel Church. First reason, obviously, is that it is a flare of prayer that opens up a year for the whole church. It is a prayer meeting with the most attendance throughout the year. Not only that, to add to the flame, all generations come together for the vision God gives us in the new year. Families come together, going beyond boundaries of language and culture, setting the most ideal example in addressing issues of immigrant churches. Bethel Church began the early morning prayer service this year with passages from QT-In curriculum for the first time. Overcoming lack of English version for QT curriculums, I believe this has brought a new start to history of immigrant churches.

Second, we shouted consistently for One Soul during Elijah Early Morning Prayer Service, setting our passions to flame. This year marks 9th year of praying fervently for our VIPs, shouting a slogan “One Person Bring One Soul to God, Amen”. As a result, we have many new members join and serve Bethel Church right now. As we gather at crack of dawn to shout the slogan, it is not simply a slogan, but it is a shout towards God’s command.

Third, it means we open up a new year with a flare of doing good work. It is our pride and joy that the first offering of the year goes to mission fields as a fragrant offering. This year we sent Elijah Thanks Offering of $20,000 to mission fields for the next generation. We were able to give scholarships to refuge children from North Korea, support living cost for African students studying in Turkey, support students on after school program that just started in Kyrgyzstan, and build an athletic field for students attending New Hope School in Cambodia.

Fourth, this was the second year that Elijah Early Morning Prayer Service was held during pandemic. Last year it was all on-line, but with the highest attendance. This year, we had more people praying passionately. We received the greatest number of My One Prayer requests. This means, like our motto ‘Go Deeper’, we are passionate about obedience to God, getting on our knees going deeper in prayer. We are already seeing fruits of our prayers. We are continuing to go deeper into God’s grace on our knees in prayer.

It’s not wrong to say that ‘a whole year’s success depends on Elijah Early Morning Prayer’. It has always been that way. In 2022, all generations will add depth to their prayers, and started heading towards evangelism and missions with great essence. I believe this will be a year filled with God’s glory that makes the church, be the church.
