광복 80주년 맞이하는 이때에 CGNTV에서 서서평 선교사의 영화 이후 8년 만에 ‘무명’이라는 영화를 만들어 지난 6.25에 개봉했다고 합니다. 미주에서도 상영회를 하기 위해 8월 광복절 이후 들어온다는 소식을 알려와서 궁금해서 유투브에 떠있는 예고편들을 보았습니다. 한마디로 한국이 가장 어려웠던 일제강점기에 일본인 선교사 두 분이 조선을 위해 복음을 전했던 보석과 같은 이야기를 캐내어 세상에 알린 아주 감동적인 다큐 영화라는 생각이 들었습니다.

일본 개신교 최초의 선교사로 한국 조선에 왔던 노리마츠 마사야츠는 본래 사무라이 집안에서 태어났다고 합니다. 우연히 알게 된 예수님의 이야기가 그의 삶을 뒤집었습니다. 당시 명성황후 시해 사건을 보고 죄책감을 느끼고, 고통 가운데 있던 한국을 위해 시해사건이 일어난 그 다음해 1896년 ‘하나님’이라는 한국말 하나 배우고 조선에 건너온 선교사입니다. 수원에 최초로 수원동신교회를 세우며, 조선인들에게 복음을 전합니다. 또한 그의 뒤를 이어 오다 나라지 선교사가 한국에 들어옵니다. 한복을 즐겨 입었다는 그는 전영복이라는 한국이름으로 활동하며, 일본인이라는 신분 때문에 그의 순수한 동기가 의심받고, 많은 어려움을 겪게 됩니다. 그럼에도 그의 복음전파가 순수한 동기임을 알리게 된 계기가, 평양 숭실대학교 강당에서 6,000명이 넘는 조선인 앞에서 신사참배가 단순한 국민의례라고 일본 정부의 주장은 거짓말이라 비판한 것입니다. 그 이후 일본정부에 의해 다섯 번이나 구금되면서도 목숨을 걸고 복음을 전한 분입니다.

2년간의 자세한 연구와 탄탄한 역사적 고증, 그리고 수준 있는 영화로 세상의 무대에 서는 이 영화가 미주에 온답니다. 무명의 선교사들을 밝혀내는 그 자체로도 이 영화는 가치 있겠지만, 역사적으로 두 나라의 예민한 갈등과 적대적 관계에서도 복음을 통해 서로 용서하고 화해하는 소망의 빛이 어떻게 표출될지도 엄청 기대가 됩니다.

저희 교회는 일본어 예배가 있습니다. 사역장로님으로 또한 실행위원으로 일본인 장로님과 안수집사님이 있는 교회입니다. 일본 주재 선교사와 협력하는 교회이며, 매년 일본으로 단기팀을 파송하고 일본에 복음 전파를 위해 힘쓰는 교회입니다. 또한 2025년에는 얼바인 지역 일본인 전도를 위해 큰 집회를 준비하고 있습니다. 이럴 즈음에 ‘무명’이라는 영화가 미주에 상륙하는 것은 하나님이 주시는 절묘한 타이밍이라 생각됩니다. “너희는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 다 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나이니라”(갈 3:28)

Gospel of Reconciliation: Japanese Missionary who came to Korea during Japanese Colonization

With upcoming 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, 8 years after CGNTV released a movie about Missionary Supyung Suh, a movie titled ‘Anonymous’ premiered on June 25. I heard a news that this movie will be available in America after the Liberation Day in August. Out of curiosity, I watched some previews on YouTube. In a word, I think it is a very moving documentary that lets the world know about precious story of 2 Japanese missionaries who came to share the gospel in Korea during Japanese Colonization.

Norimatsu Masayatsu, a Japanese Protestant’s first missionary who came to Joseon Korea, was born into a Samurai family. By chance, he learned the story of Jesus, and his life was turned upside down. A year after seeing the assassination of Empress Myeongseong, feeling guilty over the incident, the missionary learned one word ‘God’ in Korean and crossed over for suffering Korea in 1896. He planted Soowon Dongshin Church in Soowon. He began evangelizing to people of Joseon. Following his footstep, Missionary Oda Naragi came to Korea. He enjoyed wearing Korean hanbok and worked under a Korean name Youngbok Jun. Because he was Japanese, his sincere motivation was misunderstood. He encountered many difficulties. However, sincerity of his motivation in evangelism of the gospel was made known in front of over 6000 Joseon people gathered in the Soongshil University auditorium in Pyungyang. He criticized Japanese government for enforcing and lying about paying respect to Shinto shrine as a simple national ritual. He was detained five times by the Japanese government, and risked his life to spread the gospel.

This film stands on the world stage with two years of detailed research, solid historical verification, and high-quality film making. It is coming to America. Revealing the anonymous missionaries adds to the value of this movie. It is also very exciting to see how the light of hope for mutual forgiveness and reconciliation will be expressed through the gospel even in the historically sensitive conflicts and hostile relations between the two countries.

Our church has Japanese Worship service. We also have an active Japanese Elder and an ordained deacon who serve in the executive committee. Our church supports missionaries in Japan. We send short-term mission team each year, putting effort into spreading the gospel in Japan. I feel this is God’s exquisite timing that the movie ‘Anonymous’ is coming to America now. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”(Gal. 3:28)
