지난주, 이탈리아 밀라노에서 인도까지 장거리 비행을 마치고 인도에 도착한 승객들의 70%가 공항에서 실시한 코로나 테스트에서 양성 반응을 보였다고 합니다. 출발지인 이탈리아 밀라노에서 모든 승객은 도착 국가인 인도의 입국 규정에 따라 탑승 전 테스트를 받고 음성 결과 증명서를 제시하고 비행기에 탔습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 인도 Amritsar 공항에 도착한 후 승객 179명 가운데 성인 160명이 다시 규정대로 테스트했더니 125명이 양성 반응이라는 결과가 나온 것입니다. 원인 규명은 아직 안 된 상황이지만, 기내에 누군가 코로나바이러스를 가지고 있었고, 장기간 비행하는 동안 대부분의 승객이 사이좋게(?) 이것을 나누어 가진 꼴이 되었습니다.

이런 집단 감염이 이제는 가정, 심지어 교회에서도 나타나는 것 같습니다. 누군가가 몸이 좋지 않으면 바로 코로나 검사부터 하기 시작하고, 그 결과를 안타깝게 기다립니다. 예방을 하기도 전에 급작스럽게 번지는 코로나로 인해 타인과의 접촉을 가능하면 피하지만, 이미 가족 중 한 사람이 감염되면 어쩔 수 없이 함께 코로나를 이겨나가는 수밖에 없습니다. 코로나 검사 결과에 posi tive가 나오면 확진이고, negative가 나오면 다행이다 싶습니다. 일반적으로 positive는 주로 긍정이고 negative면 부정인데, 가족이 함께 코로나 positive가 나오게 되면 나름 positive(긍정적인) 면이 있습니다. 그것은 가족 간에 같이 병치레하면서 강한 유대감이 생긴다는 것입니다. 운명공동체라는 느낌이 들면서 ‘같이 죽고 같이 산다’는 전우애 같은 느낌도 듭니다. 자녀들이 확진되면서 우리 가정 안으로 반갑지 않은 코로나가 들어왔지만, 같이 밥을 먹는 밥상공동체가 서로를 챙겨주면서 일사각오의 정신이 되살아납니다. 증상이 덜한 가족이 아파 누운 가족을 챙겨주고, 회복된 가족은 또 증상이 점점 심해지는 가족을 챙겨주면서 끈끈한 사랑의 유대감이 돈독해집니다. 온 가족이 결국 코로나 테스트를 받고 음성 판정이 나오는 날, 격리가 풀리면서 자유의 땅으로 나올 때의 그 감격은 첫 예배의 자리로 나오는 감동만큼이나 클 것입니다.

베델 공동체가 또 다른 시험대에 올랐습니다. 최선을 다해 방역하고 예배드리는 성도들의 안전을 위해 애를 썼지만, 우리 교회도 코로나에 뚫렸습니다. 주일 예배를 제외한 모든 활동과 모임, 그리고 자녀들의 예배를 비대면으로 잠시 전환합니다. 하지만 확신하건대, 이 시간은 이전에 격리할 때는 경험하지 못했던 새로운 차원의 영적 유대감을 증진시키는 기회가 될 것이라고 믿습니다. 처음에는 코로나에 걸리면 격리하고 격리시키느라 정신없었다면, 지금은 같이 아파하고 같이 기도해 주면서 모두 코로나를 이기고 일어나는 positive의 결과를 향한 ‘면역 만 배’ 상승의 영적 유대감이 결성되는 기회가 되기를 기도합니다.

Negative Does Not Necessarily Confirm Absence of Infection

Last week, 70% of passengers on airplane from Milano, Italy to India tested positive upon arrival at the airport. Following India’s entry re quirement, all passengers were tested and confirmed negative prior to boarding the airplane. Upon arrival at Amritsar Airport, of 179 total pas sengers, all 160 adult passengers were tested again according to regula tion. 125 passengers showed positive results. They still haven’t identified the source. But someone boarded the plane with Covid infection. During the long flight, the virus was shared with most of the passengers.

This kind of cluster of infections has reached our homes and even our church. If someone doesn’t feel well, we immediately get tested and wait anxiously for the result. We try to avoid interaction with strang ers due to this infection that spreads quickly, even before having a chance to sanitize. However, when a family member is infected, we have no other way but to share the Covid and get through it together. When your test result is positive, then you’re infected. When it’s nega tive, you’re in the clear. Generally, positive means good, and negative is not. When a family member tests positive, there are certain positive aspects to the situation. A strong bond arises as family members nurse each other. Feeling like this is fate, there is a certain comradery like, ‘live together and die together’. With our children getting infected, Covid infection has unwelcomingly come into our homes. As a family, we share meal tables together. As we care for each other, we see the spirit of single mindedness come to life. A family member with mild symptoms cares for others in bed with severe symptoms, and as they care for each other, a bond of love strengthens. On the day when the whole family tests negative, getting liberated from quarantine, they will be emotional much like the first day we came for an in-person worship service at church.

Our Bethel community is being tested again. We did our best to sani tize for safety of our congregation, but our church has been pierced by Covid. Except for Lord’s Day worship services, all activities and wor ship for our children have moved to online for the moment. I believe this will be an opportunity to strengthen our spiritual bonding. Initial ly, we spent a lot of energy on distancing ourselves from those that have been infected. Now we suffer together, praying for each other until we defeat Covid and reach ‘herd immunity’. I pray for all of us to ascend and form spiritual bonds.
