매년 8월이 되면 저희 베델목회자들은 내년 계획을 위해서 정책회의로 모입니다. 작년에는 시에틀에서 모였는데, 올해는 다시 기승을 부리는 코로나 바이러스로 인해 자동차를 타고 인근 지역을 찾다가, 교회에서 1시간 반 거리인 태매큘라로 가게 되었습니다. 비교적 가까운 거리지만, 처음으로 태매큘라를 가보게 되었습니다. 길들이 잘 닦인 것을 보며, 계획되어진 도시임이 느껴졌습니다. 단지들도 새건물로 예쁘게 꾸며져 있었고, 큰 병원도 보이고, 날씨도 바다 바람이 느껴지는 시원한 곳이었습니다. 집값도 얼바인보다 훨씬 저렴하고, 또한 남가주에게 유일하게 포도원이 되어 유명한 와이너리가 있는 곳이었습니다. 한 가지 흠이 있다면, 베델교회가 없었습니다.

우리 목회진들과 함께 3박4일 한 집에서 동거하면서, 서로를 향한 끈끈한 연대감을 증진하고, 큐티로 매일 말씀을 나누면서 서로를 더 깊이 이해하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 늘 교역자회의에서 맡은 사역만 보고 하고 보고 받다가, 서로의 삶을 같이 나누고 기도하는 시간은 우리가 베델의 한 가족인 것이 느껴지는 시간이었습니다. 아침 일찍 일어나 같이 기도하고, 인근 지역을 산행하며 같이 땀 흘린 추억도 잊을 수가 없습니다. 또한 교회 장로님들께서 첫 식사를 공급해 주시겠다고 그 먼 길을 찾아 오셔서, 맛있는 고기를 구워주시면서 섬겨주셨는데, 우리 목회진들은 말 그대로 어안이 벙벙했습니다. 교회의 리더십에 계시는 장로님들과 권사님들이 오셔서 밥 한끼라도 섬겨주시겠다고 오셔서 정성 드려 요리해 주시고, 격려해 주셨는데, 우리 모두는 너무나 감격했습니다. 우리는 저절로 외쳤습니다. “우리가 더 열심히 하자!” 자연스럽게 우리 모두는 베델의 교역자된 것이 자랑스럽고 뿌듯했습니다. 고무된 마음으로 함께 교회를 위해 내년을 계획하는데, 저는 담임목사로 부교역자들의 그 마음들이 얼마나 귀하고 고마웠는지요… 더 맛있는 거 해주고 싶고, 격려해 주고 싶었습니다.

일만 한다고 일이 잘 되는 것은 아닌 것 같습니다. 같이 놀고, 같이 웃고, 같이 운동하면서 서로를 사랑하는 마음이 충만해질 때, 더 의욕적으로 일도 할 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 파트타임까지도 다 올라왔으면 하는 아쉬움이 들었지만, 다음을 기약하고, 정책회의를 마치고 수요예배를 향하여 열심히 달려오는 우리들의 마음은 하나도 피곤하지 않고, 의욕과 열심으로 충만했습니다.

쉼은 일을 하지 않는 것이 쉼이 아니라, 같이 하는 것이 쉼이고, 그 쉼은 하나님의 사역에 에너지가 된다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 우리 성도님들도 함께 하는 쉼에서 얻는 동기부여와 기쁨과 충만함이 있기를 진심으로 바랍니다.

Returning from 2023 Policy Meeting…

Every August comes annual policy meeting for Bethel Pastoral staff to plan for next year. Last year the meeting was held in Seattle. This year, with ramping up of Covid, we looked for a nearby location that we could travel by car. We found a place about an hour and half from church. Temecula is relatively close. It was my first time going there. It seemed like a planned community with well laid out roads. There were very pretty areas with brand new houses, and a large hospital. The weather was nice with breezes. Housing seemed very affordable in the area and, with vineyards, there is a famous winery. If there were one negative thing, there is no Bethel Church.

Spending 4 days and 3 nights together promoted a sense of solidarity within our pastoral staff. As we shared QTs together, we had a great time of understanding each other. During our weekly staff meetings, we usually spend more of our time giving and receiving reports on projects we are in charge of. But being able to share our lives and to pray for each other really brought us together as one Bethel family. We prayed together early in the morning. We then walked the neighborhoods together with unforgettable memories of sweats. One of the church Elders came all the way to provide our first meal of delicious barbeque. Our pastoral staffs were left speechless. We were touched by all of the Elders and Deaconesses of our church leadership who came to cook and encourage us. “Let’s do our best!” came out of our lips naturally with pride and joy of being Bethel pastoral members. Our hearts were inspired. We worked together on plans for our church’s next year. As a senior pastor, I was most appreciative of our pastoral staff… I wanted to feed them more with delicious food and encourage them.

Just because you work hard doesn’t necessarily mean you produce good work. When we play, laugh and exercise together, our hearts become full. I realized that this is when we become even more ambitious with our work. I wished we could have brought even the part time staff. However, we finished planning for next year, ended our policy meeting and headed back to church for Wednesday worship. We were not tired. Our hearts were still full of will and enthusiasm.

I realized that resting is not to simply stop working. Being together is resting, and resting becomes energy for doing God’s work. May our congregation find rest in being together, and be filled with motivation and joy from that rest.
