어느새 교회를 설립한 지 46년이 되었습니다. 찬양곡 가사에도 있듯이 “내 평생 살아온 길 되돌아보면 짧은 내 인생길 오직 주의 은혜라~” 우리 베델교회가 걸어온 지난 46년은 다함이 없는 주의 은혜와 사랑의 세월이었습니다. 약 반세기 전, 얼바인에 불어왔던 부흥의 열매로 베델교회가 탄생한 이후, 특별히 선교에 열심이던 C&MA 교단에 가입하여 지금까지 달려온 46년의 세월이었습니다. 교인 번호 100번 아래이신 과테말라 선교사 유한성 목사님은, 평신도에서 부목사로 그리고 선교사로 사역하시며 베델의 역사와 함께하신 분으로 우리 교회가 걸어온 지난 세월은 전적인 하나님의 은혜였음을 눈물로 고백하십니다.

성경은 세월을 아끼라고 이야기합니다. (엡 5:16) 돈을 아껴 쓴다는 말은 이해가 되는데, 가만히 있어도 그냥 흘러가는 세월은 어떻게 아껴 쓸 수 있을까요? 돈은 쥐고 붙들 수 있다지만, 시간은 그렇지 않습니다. 아마도, 시간의 활용도를 말하는 것으로 생각합니다. 우리에게 공평하게 주어진 시간을 누구는 복음을 전하는 데 사용하고, 또 누구는 악담하는데 사용할 수 있습니다. 누구는 남을 격려하고, 교회에 덕을 쌓으며, 선한 일을 위해 구슬땀을 흘리는 데 사용하지만, 누구는 똑같은 시간을 남을 깎아내리고, 교회를 허물고, 죄를 도모하는 일에 사용하기도 합니다. 결국 세월을 아끼라는 말은 하나님이 기뻐하시는 선한 일과 유익을 위해서 시간을 사용하라는 뜻입니다. 이번에 우리는 마흔여섯 번째 교회 생일을 맞이하며, 지나온 세월이 하나님이 기뻐하시는 일을 위해서 아낌없이 활용했던 크로노스의 시간이었음을 믿고 감사를 드립니다. 이번 베델 선교대회는 말 그대로 하나님이 우리와 함께하신 세월에 대한 감사와 찬양으로, 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 사용하셨는지를 한눈에 보는 시
간이 될 것입니다.

디아스포라 교회로 하나님이 반세기 가까이 사용하신 베델교회는 이제, 중년에 걸맞은 모습으로 선교의 가치를 더 높이 들어야 할 성숙의 시기라 믿습니다. 이러한 선교대회를 치를 수 있는 교회로 성장하게 하신 하나님께 감사드립니다. 이제, 복음의 가치를 위해 더 충성스럽게 쓰임 받는 교회로서, 이민교회의 좋은 모델로서 선교적인 사명을 더 크게 감당하는 비전을 품습니다. 부디 또 다른 반세기를 향한 조지아에서의 힘찬 발돋움이 베델의 모든 선교사님과 함께 세계 방방곡곡 사명의 현장으로 뻗어나가, 그 부흥의 열기를 가지고 얼바인을 향하여 돌아오기를 기도합니다.

46 Years of Time (2) – As We Begin Bethel Mission Conference

It has been 46 years since our church was founded. Like the hymn says, “When I think of the life passed, my life is all because of His grace~”. 46 years of journey for our church has been clearly a journey of His grace and love. Bethel church was born as a fruit of spiritual revival that swept Irvine about half a century ago. After joining the C&MA denomination that has special passion for mission work, we have been running the race for the last 46 years. Guatemala missionary, Pastor Yoo Han Sung, has a church member registration number that is below 100. He was a lay person back then. He became a pastor, and then a missionary. As a person who has been with the church through its history, he tearfully confesses that it was all because of God’s grace.

Bible tells us to redeem the time (Eph 5:16). I would understand if it said to save money. But time passes even when we are standing still. How do you make the best use of time? You can hold on to money, but you cannot hold on to time. It’s talking about utilization of our time. Some could use time to share the gospel. Some could use to gossip. Some will spend time to encourage others and bless the church. Some will use for good works, while some uses to bring down others. Some will use to tear down church and to promote sin. Redeeming our time means to use the time to please God and for works that are beneficial. On this 46th birthday of our church, we thank God that the past has been Kronos time that was generously spent for works that pleased God. This year’s Bethel Mission Conference will provide time when we can see with thanks and praises in one swoop how God has used us in the past.

God used Bethel church as a diaspora church through the past half a century. Now with church at middle age and a more mature state, it is time for us to raise the stakes even higher for missions. We thank God for growth of our church and the ability to hold the mission conference. Now we have a vision, as a model immigrant church, to be used loyally for the gospel, and to take on the calling of mission to even greater level. From Georgia, with all of the Bethel missionaries gathered, we take a great stride toward the next half century to rise up and spread out to all parts of the world. I pray that we will return to Irvine with greater passion for revival.
