요즘 목회자들이 만나면, 코로나 이후 변해가는 교회의 생태계를 보면서 그 대처방안을 논하는 것이 주된 일입니다. 아무래도 온라인에 익숙해진 성도들을 어떻게 다시 현장으로 데려올 것인가에 대한 이런 저런 방법을 나누기에 바쁩니다. 대략 70%의 성도들이 현장으로 돌아온 것 같지만, 아직도 돌아오지 않는 30%의 성도들은 정말로 어디로 간 것일까요? 지금까지 한 번도 물어보지 않은 질문을 우리는 하고 있습니다. 현장 예배에 나오지는 않지만, 온라인으로 본 교회의 예배채널에 연결되어 있으면, 우리 교회 성도로 간주할 것인가, 아니면 다른 교회의 온라인 예배를 드리는 것으로 소위 ‘주일성수’ 했다고 여기고 계속 등록교인 신분을 유지할 수 있는 것인가?

팬데믹으로 인한 행정명령으로 어쩔 수 없이 현장예배를 닫게 되면서 그 대안으로 시작된 온라인 예배는, 온라인화 되어가는 이 시대 우리의 신앙생활에 대한 또 다른 대안을 찾는 아이러니에 봉착해 있습니다. 저는 늘 주장했듯이, 팬데믹은 우리 신앙의 현주소를 백일하에 보여주는 하나님의 방법이었다고 믿습니다. 예배 처소에 나올 수 없을 때 우리 신앙의 현주소는 어디인지를 보게 하신 하나님께서, 이제는 예배당에 나올 수 있을 때, 더 분명하게 나의 신앙 상태를 보게 하십니다. 팬데믹 전에는 예배에 나오는 현장에서 문제를 일으키는 성도들 때문에 스트레스를 받았다면, 이제는 예배에 나오지 않고 편의주의에 빠진 온라인 성도들 때문에 스트레스를 받는다고 해야 할 것 같습니다.

우리 신앙의 본질은 환경에 따라 바뀔 수 없습니다. 현장예배를 드리든, 온라인 예배를 드리든, 분명한 것은 교회의 본질은 변하지 않는다는 것이며 팬데믹을 통과하면서 붙들었던 것, 아니 붙들 수밖에 없었던 것이 바로 이것이었습니다. 이제 교회의 본질이 다시 우리의 손에서 멀어져가고 있는 지금, 아직 현장에 돌아오지 않은 30%를 염려하고 있는 것입니다. 광야에서 양을 칠 때 가지고 다니던 모세의 지팡이가 골리앗 같은 인생의 장벽이나 완고한 애굽의 바로 왕 앞에 설 때 “하나님의 지팡이”가 된 것 같이, 내가 들고 다니는 지팡이를 우리도 확인해 보아야 합니다. 팬데믹이 가르쳐 준 본질을 놓치지 않을 때, 내 손의 지팡이가 하나님의 지팡이가 될 것입니다. 놓으면 뱀이 되고 다시 잡으면 지팡이가 되는 것처럼, 이제 더 이상 팬데믹에 끌려 다니지 말고 하나님 앞에서만 신앙생활을 하고 싶습니다. 내 지팡이를 내려놓으면 하나님의 지팡이를 잡을 수 있습니다. 평생 의지했던 지팡이, 팬데믹 때 깨달은 그 지팡이, 이번에는 내려놓고 하나님의 지팡이를 잡고 일어섭시다.

Staff to Put Down

Nowadays when pastors meet, the main subject of discussion is countermeasures for changing church situations since the pandemic. We are busy discussing how to have congregation to come out to church who have become accustomed to online worship. About 70% of the congregation has returned to in-person worship. Then, where are the 30% who have not returned? We are asking the question that has never been asked before. They are not in in-person worship. If they worshipped online and were connected to church in that way, do we consider them church members? If they worshipped online with a different church, do we consider that they have ‘kept the Lord’s Day’ and continue their memberships with their own churches?

Due to state executive order during pandemic, we had to close doors to in-person worship. An alternative method, worshiping online, has since become accepted as the norm. Ironically, we are encountering this way as another method of living out our faith. As I have always claimed, pandemic is God’s way of showing us where our faith is. I believe that when we were not able to attend worship in-person, God showed us the state of our faith clearly. If I were stressed over difficult church members before pandemic, now I am stressed over church members who fell into comfort of online worship and do not attend in-person.

Nature of our faith should not change with environment. It is clear that the nature of church does not change whether you worship in-person or online. Pandemic was the moment when we needed to hang onto that nature. It is this nature that helped us through the pandemic. I am worried for those 30% who have not returned to church and far from our grasp. The staff that Moses carried while tending sheep became “God’s staff” when he stood in front of Pharaoh of Egypt, who seemed like Goliath. We must check on our own staff. When we hold on to the True nature that the pandemic taught us, the staff in your hand will become God’s staff. Like when Moses let go of his staff it became a serpent, and when he held it again it became staff, let’s not be swayed by the pandemic any longer. Let’s live out our faith before God. I believe if we let go of our own staff, the staff that you have relied on all your life and during pandemic, we can hold God’s staff in our hand. Let go. Hold onto God’s staff and rise up.
