눈코 뜰 새 없이 바쁜 일정을 ‘살인적 스케줄’이라고 합니다. 바쁘다는 말은 할 일이 많다는 것이고, 주위에 ‘나’를 필요로 하는 일과 사람들이 많다는 의미일 것입니다. 목회도 사람을 만나는 일이다 보니, ‘바쁘다 바빠’하며 뛰어 다닐 때가 자주 있습니다. 저에게 우리 성도님들 만나는 것은 사역 순서상 제일 위에 있기에 바쁘다고 성도님들 만나는 스케줄을 줄이는 경우는 거의 없는 것 같습니다. 그러나, 교회 밖의 일로 요청이 오는 스케줄을 컨트롤 하지 않고 정신줄을 놓으면 정말 정신 없을 때가 많습니다. 사명 가진 목회자는 바쁩니다. 여기 저기 뛰어 다녀야만 바쁜 것이 아니라, 사명을 감당하기 위해 기도의 자리, 말씀 연구의 자리에 지긋이 앉아 있는 것도 바쁩니다. 부르심이 있는 곳에 달려가야 하는 것도 사명 맡은 자의 본분입니다. 그래서 목회자가 갖추어야할 중요한 훈련은 시간 관리입니다.

한번은 친한 목회자와 함께 이야기 하다가 ‘살인적 스케줄’이 화제가 되었습니다. 아무리 생각해도 같이 한 자리에서 식사할 시간을 찾을 수가 없었습니다. 미팅이 줄을 서 있고, 참여해야 할 컨퍼런스가 한 주 걸러있고, 거기에 본 교회의 새벽기도부터 설교할 일이 일주일에 적어도 5회 이상 있는 것 같았습니다. 정말 건강이 걱정될 정도로 뛰어 다니는 목사에게 제가 해 줄 수 있는 충고는 “건강 지켜라”였습니다.

내가 필요하다고 부르는 곳이 있다는 것은 축복입니다. 속된 표현 같지만 ‘메뚜기도 한 철’입니다. 부를 때 열심히 달려갈 수 있으니 감사한 일입니다. 그러나 제가 생각하는 바쁨은 빈틈이 없이 연달아 있는 스케줄을 말하지 않습니다. 아무리 바빠도 틈이 있어야 합니다. 스케줄 사이에 틈을 두어야 ‘여유’가 생깁니다. 그 틈은 바쁜 스케줄 중에 뒤돌아 볼 수 있는 공간입니다. 검토할 수 있는 시간을 반드시 가져야 합니다. 또한 그 틈은 몸이 쉴 수 있는 공간입니다. 몸이 피곤하면 생각에 부정적인 영향을 미칩니다. 항상 하나님의 은혜 속에 거하며, 그 풍성함 속에서 영적인 메시지를 끌어 올리는 힘은 쉼에 있습니다.

목회자에게 필요한 것은 창의성입니다. 특히 설교는 창조적이어야 합니다. 설교 내용은 잘 주해를 하면 됩니다. 그러나 설교의 구성과 전달은 다릅니다. 지금까지 축적된 지식들이 적재적소에 들어가 말씀의 내용을 효과적으로 청중에게 전달되기 위해서는 창의성이 있어야 합니다. 목회자가 바쁘면 그 창의성이 가장 큰 손해를 봅니다. 여유가 없기 때문입니다. 우리의 억눌린 삶에 돌파구가 필요할 때, 살인적 스케줄 속에서 틈새를 노리십시오. 그리고, 그 틈을 확장해서 창의적 구상을 할 수 있는 여유를 가지십시오.

Finding Your Niche

Being busy usually means that there is too much work to do. It means you are surrounded by work that demands “you” yourself. It can also mean those busy times that people say it cannot be accomplished without “you”. Ministry is about meeting people and most of the time we find ourselves running around panting, “Busy. Oh so busy.” I place first priority in my schedule on meeting with the members of our church so there is not a time where I may back out on my schedule. But when it comes to matters outside the church, I would lose my mind if I do not manage my time. Any minister who is called to ministry will be busy. They are not busy running to and fro, but they are busy in the place of prayer, praying to handle the call to ministry. They are busily steadfast researching for their sermons. It is their duty to rush to wherever they are called. Thus, the primary skill for someone in ministry is to find how to best manage their time.

I was speaking with a close pastor friend about the topic of the “lethal schedule”. We both looked for an opening in our schedule but could not even match up one moment to have a meal together. His calendar was lined up with countless meetings. The conferences he was to attend took up an entire week at a time. Moreover, there was the weekly dawn prayer service at his church where he preached a sermon for at least 5 days in a row. I was so worried about his health that my only advice to him was, “Guard your health!”

It is a blessing to have a place where you are needed. There’s an old idiom, “There is but one prime season for grasshoppers.” It means that you ought to be grateful for the season that you can answer when called. But, what I mean by “busyness” is not about the packed schedule that has no room for breathing. No matter how busy you find yourself, you must leave yourself some slack. You need to place these slots of time between each schedule to permit room to recuperate. We can look back at these spaces between these events on your calendar as rest stops. You must allow yourself some time for evaluation. That space also allows for your body to recover. When the body is exhausted it will negatively affect your thinking. In order to remain in God’s Grace and cultivate an abundance of spiritual insight, you must seek appropriate times of rest.

One of the most essential resources to a minister is his creativity. Sermons are especially where creativity is necessary. The sermon’s contents must be crafted well. But in order for a sermon to be prepared and then delivered effectively to the audience, the composition, the delivery, and all the accumulated knowledge must be constructed into the right spots by creative power. When the minister is too busy, the greatest casualty is loss of creativity. It is all because there is a lack of breathing room. When you need a breakthrough from the pressures of life, look for that niche (that slot of time) in your lethal schedule. Moreso, reinforce that moment with creativity by loosening up and relaxing. Take a breath.
