저희 가족이 좋아하는 시간 중 하나는 둘러 앉아 옛날 사진을 꺼내 보는 것입니다. 지금은 중학생인 딸의 아기 때 사진을 보며, “너는 태어나서 1년 동안 머리카락이 없어서 늘 남자 아이냐고 질문을 받았지!” 하고 장난치기도 하고, 수다스러운 막내 아들에게는 “그때는 말을 못 하고 눈만 껌뻑이며 우리가 하는 말을 듣기만 했잖아, 얼마나 답답했을까?”하며 웃곤 합니다. 그렇게 사진을 보면 아이들이 어느새 많이 자란 것을 깨닫고, 저와 아내는 “우리도 이렇게 나이가 들어가는구나” 싶습니다. 불과 1년 전 사진만 봐도, “아, 그때 정말 젊었네?”라는 생각이 듭니다. 우리의 삶은 영원할 것 같지만, 시간은 모래시계처럼 멈추지 않고 흘러갑니다. 베드로전서 4:7에서는 ‘세월을 아끼라’고 말하며 두 가지를 권면합니다.

첫 번째는 하나님을 향한 기도입니다. 먼저 ‘근신하여 기도하라’고 합니다(7절). 이것은 무엇을 반성하라는 뜻이 아니라 깨어 있는 상태를 의미합니다. 이는 앞에(3절) 언급된 ‘술 취함’과 반대되는 상태입니다. 세상 사람들은 무엇인가에 취해 살아갑니다. 세상에서 일어나는 수많은 일들에 마음과 생각이 사로잡히는 것입니다. 경쟁과 비교의 세상에서 소유하고 성취하며 안정을 추구하는 데 관심이 몰입되기 쉽습니다. 즐길 거리는 많아지고, 걱정거리는 그만큼 늘어난 시대에 우리의 마음과 생각을 빼앗겨서 하나님께서 이끄시고자 하는 목적을 잊을 수 있습니다. 그래서 절제하고(self-controlled), 맑은 정신으로(sober-minded) 하나님을 향하라는 것입니다. 기도를 통해 하나님께 전적인 의존을 표현하고, 나의 삶의 주권을 하나님께 내어드릴 때, 하나님께서는 이 땅에서의 시간을 가장 소중하게 보낼 수 있는 지혜로 인도하여 주시는 줄 믿습니다.

두 번째는 서로를 향한 사랑입니다. 그리고 하나님과의 기도의 교제는 서로를 향한 사랑으로 이끕니다(8절). 말씀을 묵상하고 기도하는 삶이 이끄는 방향은 사랑입니다. 보이지 않는 하나님을 향한 사랑은, 보이는 사람을 향한 사랑으로 나타나는 것입니다. 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮습니다. 우리는 여전히 허물과 연약함이 있을 수밖에 없습니다. 그러나 십자가 사랑으로 허물이 덮어진 우리는 이제 다른 사람들의 연약함도 인내하고 덮어주는 마음을 갖게 됩니다. 그리고 “서로를 대접하라”는(9절) 합니다. 서로의 필요를 살피고 채워주는 것 입니다. 격려의 말과 나의 시간, 물질, 공간을 내어주는 것입니다. 이것은 나의 의지로 하려고 하면 지치고 고갈될 수 있습니다. 그래서 다시 기도 속에서 하나님 감사와 은혜, 힘을 공급 받는 것입니다.

세상 사람들은 하나님께 기도하는 것이나, 남을 헌신적으로 섬기는 일에 대해 시간이 아깝다고 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 성도에게 이것은 하나님 앞에서 가장 복되고, 사람들과 풍성하고, 자신에게도 행복한 삶이 됩니다. 마치 예전 사진을 보면 혼자 찍은 사진보다 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 찍은 사진이 더 의미 있고, 그 순간들이 더 풍성한 추억으로 다가오듯 말입니다. 이렇게 우리에게 주어진 시간 속에서 깨어 기도하고 서로를 사랑함으로 하나님께 영광 돌리는 삶이 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

One of the things that my family enjoys doing together is to gather around and flip through old photos. My junior high daughter playfully jokes looking at her baby picture, “I didn’t have any hair for a year since birth. People always asked if I was a boy!” To my talkative youngest son, she would laugh and say, “Back then, you couldn’t speak, you just looked at us wide eyed and just listened to what we were saying. How frustrating it must have been?” When we look at photos like those, my wife and I realize how much the children have grown, and say, “We are getting older like them too.” Just looking at photos from a year ago makes me think, “Oh, I was really young back then.” Our lives may seem to last forever, but time goes by without stopping, like an hourglass. 1 Peter 4:7 says, ’The end of all things is at hand….’ and Peter urges two things.

First is pray to God. Foremost, it says ‘sober minded for the sake of your prayers’(v.7). This doesn’t mean to reflect but to be in the state of being awaken. This is opposite of ‘drunkenness’ referred previously (v.3). People in the world are intoxicated with things. Our hearts are captivated by many things in this world. In world under competition and comparisons, we become easily distracted by possessions, achievements, and security. In an era of increased pleasures and worries, our hearts and minds get swept away, forgetting the purpose that God wants to lead us to. That is why we must be self -controlled, sober -minded toward God. When we calmly express our total dependence on God through prayer, surrendering our lives to Him, I believe that He will give us the wisdom and guidance to make the most of our time on this earth.

Second is love each other. This kind of fellowship with God in prayer naturally brings us to love each other (v.8). Love is the direction that we are led to as result of meditating on the Word and prayer. Invisible love toward God is revealed in visible love towards others. This love covers a multitude of sins. We still have flaws and weaknesses. But because our flaws have been covered by the love of Christ’s cross, we have the hearts that love by being patient and covering weaknesses of others. Furthermore, “show hospitality to one another”(v.9). This is to fill the needs of others. This is to give encouragements, possessions, and space that others need. If we try to do this on our own will, we will become exhausted and depleted.

People in the world may say that it’s a waste of time to pray or to serve others sacrificially. However, for believers, in midst of prayer, we receive God’s gratefulness, grace, and strength. For God’s people, this is the most blessed, fuller relationship with others, and happiest life for us. I bless you in the name of the Lord that we may live a life that glorifies God by staying awake, praying, and loving one another.
