제자라는 말은 스승을 그대로 보여주는 견습생(apprentice)을 의미합니다. 이번 순교지 답방은 예수님 제자들의 최후의 모습이 모두 십자가를 닮은 순교였음을 확인하는 기회였습니다. 특별히 베드로와 사도바울이 순교 당하기 전 마지막 감금되었던 감옥이 같은 감옥이었습니다. 유대인과 이방인의 사도로 부름 받은 두 사람은 감옥 동창생이었습니다. 베드로는 “쿼바디스 도미네, 주여 어디로 가시나이까?” 질문에 다시 십자가 지시기 위해서 로마로 돌아간다는 주님의 대답을 듣고 맘을 고쳐먹고 로마로 돌아가 십자가에 꺼꾸로 매달려 순교 당하였습니다. 사도 바울은 실제 로마에서 두 번 구금을 당합니다. 첫번째 구금시는 셋집에 살면서 복음을 전할 수 있었습니다(행 28:30). 이때 골로새서 빌립보서 등을 썼다고 믿어집니다. 2년 후 석방되지만 당시 로마의 화재의 원인을 기독교인이라 뒤집어 씌우고, 그 본보기로 사도바울이 다시 구금되게 되고, 결국 참수당하게 됩니다. 그 현장은 지금 봐도 을씨년 하고, 실내 공기가 싸늘하게 느껴졌습니다. 난방이 없는 겨울에 이 감옥에서 바울은 마지막 서신 디모데후서를 쓰면서 제자 디모데에게 드로아 가보의 집에 두고 온 자기 겉옷을 가져오라 합니다. 요즘 같이 택배가 되는 시절도 아니고, 디모데가 그 겉옷을 가져가는 시간만 해도 몇달이 걸렸을 것입니다. 로마에 재판 받기 위해 죄수의 몸으로 왔을 때는 로마에서 약 50km나 떨어진 삼관까지 마중 나왔던 로마 교인들이 있었습니다. 그러나, 바울이 다시 투옥된 지금은 그 누구도 찾아오는 사람이 없었나 봅니다. 방한복 한 벌 넣어줄 사람이 없었던 것입니다. “다 나를 버렸다”(딤후 4:16) 남긴 바울의 마지막 편지가 어느 은퇴 목사님의 말과 겹쳐져 가슴 한 켠이 시려 옵니다.

이번에 예수님이 제일 먼저 제자로 불렀던 안드레 사도가 순교 당한 파트라를 향한 길은 만만치 않았습니다. 가는 날이 장날이라고 마라톤 대회를 한다고, 파트라 도시 전체에 차량 통제를 하는 바람에 들어갈 수 없어서, 7시간 만에 다른데 들렸다가 다시 돌아오는 수고를 했습니다. 안드레는 어쩌면 자기가 전도한 베드로에게 가려 빛을 보지 못한 사도였습니다. 그럼에도 그는 이곳 그리스 파트라까지 와서 복음을 전하며 마침 아픈 총독의 아내를 안수하여 고쳐주게 됩니다. 이 계기로 예수를 믿고 개종한 자기 아내에게 신앙을 포기하라고 종용했지만, 여전히 예수님만 바라보는 아내로 인해 총독은 안드레를 X십자가에 못박아 처형합니다. X자 십자가 형이 가장 고통스럽고 가장 오랜 시간 서서히 죽이는 처형이라고 하는데, 안드레는 “…내가 사랑하는 예수 안에서 나를 발견 했습니다” 고백하면서 순교하였다고 합니다. 스스로에게 “예수님 제자가 되기를 원하는가?” 진지하게 물어보는 시간이 되었습니다.

Do you want to be a disciple of Jesus?

The word disciple means apprentice, to learn from a teacher who shows everything. The trip to Christian martyrdom sites gave us an opportunity to confirm that the final images of Jesus’ disciples were all martyrdom resembling the cross. In particular, we visited a prison. It was the same prison where Peter and the Apostle Paul were imprisoned before their martyrdom. These two, called to be Apostles to Jews and Gentiles, were the prison classmates. To the question “Quo Vadis Domine, Lord, where are you going?” Peter heard the answer from the Lord that he’s going back to Rome to carry the cross again. Peter changed his heart and returned to Rome. He was crucified upside down. Apostle Paul was detained twice in Rome. The first time he was detained, he was confined in a rented house but was able to share the gospel (Act 28:30). It is believed that he wrote Colossians, Philippians and other books during this time. He was released 2 years later. Under false accusation that the fire in Rome was caused by Christians, Paul was arrested again as an example to others. He was ultimately beheaded. Even now, the place appeared scary, and the air felt cold. In winter, without heating, Paul wrote his final epistle, 2 Timothy. He asked his disciple Timothy to bring him his cloak he left with Carpus at Troas. It wasn’t like they had delivery services like today. It probably took months for Timothy to bring his cloak. When Paul returned to Rome as a prisoner to be tried, there were Roman church members who traveled over 50km to greet him. However, when he was imprisoned again, it seems no one came to see him. There was no one person to lend him winter clothes. “Everyone deserted me (2Tim 4:16).” The last letter Paul left behind overlays with the words of a retired pastor. My heart ached.

The road to Patras, where Andrew, the apostle whom Jesus first called as a disciple, was martyred, was not easy. It just happened that the day we were visiting was scheduled for a marathon race. The entire city was under traffic control, and we couldn’t enter the city. We had to detour for 7 hours, visited another place and returned. Andrew was perhaps an apostle who was overshadowed by Peter, to who he shared the gospel. Regardless, he came to Patras, Greece to share the gospel and prayed over governor’s wife and healed her. Governor urged his wife, who had converted to Christian through this healing, to give up on her faith. Because of her continued faith, he crucified Andrew on a X cross. They say X cross is the most excruciating and takes a long time to die. But Andrew confessed “…I discovered myself in Jesus whom I love” as he was martyred. It was a moment to ask seriously “Do you want to be a disciple of Jesus?”
