영국에서 소위 ‘조용한 부흥(The quiet revival)’이 일어나고 있다는 기사를 접했습니다. 지난주 부활절 예배에 성인의 출석이 8%에서 12%로 증가했다는 보고였습니다. 큰 증가로 보이지 않을지 몰라도, 실제로 교회에 출석하는 사람의 수가 200만 명 더 늘었음을 의미한다고 하니, 괄목상대할 만한 현상입니다. 150년 전 영국 웨일즈 출신 토마스 선교사가 조선에 선교사로 오면서 순교까지 했는데, 교회가 점점 비어 가고, 예배당 건물이 술집, 음식점으로 변한다고 우울한 소식까지 접한 지가 얼마 안 되었는데, 영국 땅에 다시 부흥이 조용히 찾아오고 있다는 것은 반가운 소식이 아닐 수 없습니다. 특별히 주목할 것은 18세에서 24세의 젊은 성인들의 교회 출석률이 지난 6년간 4%에서 16%로 증가했고, 남성의 경우는 21%까지 증가했다는 것입니다. 지난 부활절 웨스트민스터대성당은 미처 예배당 안으로 들어가지 못한 성도들 약 200명 정도가 문밖에서 휴대폰으로 예배를 드리는 모습도 보였다고 합니다.

교회 부흥은 단지 한 교회의 성장만을 의미하지 않습니다. 교회 부흥은 사회적 현상입니다. 옛날 부흥의 시기에 감옥이 텅텅 비고, 술집이 문을 닫는 현상들은 교회 부흥과 직접 연관된 사회 현상들이었습니다. 교회가 부흥하면 가정이 안정을 찾습니다. 교회가 부흥하면, 자선 단체들이 활발해지고, 사회적 약자들을 돌보는 일에 자원자들이 많아집니다. 교회가 부흥하면, 무엇보다, 행복지수가 높아지면서 삶의 만족도도 높아집니다.

지난주 직장 때문에 동부로 이사 가는 성도님 가정을 위해 기도해 드렸습니다. 우리 교회에 오신 지 이제 1년밖에 되지 않아서 아쉬웠습니다. 기도해 드리고 담소하는 가운데, 1년 전 우리 교회 오신 이유를 알게 되었습니다. 작년 파리 올림픽 개막식을 우연히 보면서 남사스러운 모습에 우리 아이들을 잘 키워야겠다고 정신이 번쩍 들었답니다. 그래서 본인은 불교 종교를 가지고 있었고, 남편은 무신론자였지만, 기독교 학교를 찾아 아이들 입학시키러 왔는데, 그 학교가 Bethel Classical Academy였고, 그리고 와서 보니 베델교회가 한인교회인 줄 알고 다니기 시작하면서 믿음이 생겼다고 합니다.이처럼 사람은 의미와 가치를 추구하며 살고 싶은 것입니다. 영국의 ‘조용한 부흥’은 이미 아이를 잘 키우려는 부모에게 시작되었던 것입니다. 이웃교회 목사님과 이야기하다가 지난 부활주일 제일 많은 성도들이 교회로 몰려왔다고 소식을 전해줍니다. 참 감사했습니다. 우리 안에 영원을 사모하고, 영적인 가치를 인정하고 추구하는 마음들을 주셔서 감사했습니다. 우리 베델교회에도 이런 조용하지만, 확실한 부흥이 휩쓸기를 기도합니다.

Seeking Church Again

I encountered an article about what is called ‘The quiet revival’ in England. It reported that the last week’s Easter worship attendance increased from 8% to 12%. It may not seem like a huge increase. However, it meant the attendees increased by 2 million people. It is worthy of attention. 150 years ago, Missionary Thomas from Wales came to Korea and was martyred. However, not too long ago, we heard a sad news that the churches in England continue to become empty, and Church buildings are turning into bars and restaurants. It was a joyful news to hear that a quiet revival is returning to England once again. In the last 6 years, the attendance of young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 increased from 4% to 16 %. Attendance of men increased to 21%. Last Easter, there was an image of about 200 people, who could not enter Westminster Cathedral to worship, standing outside, using their cell phones to worship.

Revival of church does not mean just one church. Revival of church is a social phenomenon. In the past, during a time of revival, jails were empty, and bars closed. These were social phenomena that are directly related to revival of church. When churches revive, families become secure. When churches revive, charity organizations become active, and volunteers increase to take care of the socially disadvantaged. When churches revive, the happiness index increase, and the life satisfaction also increase.

Last week I had a time to pray for a family that was moving to East Coast due to job relocation. It was too bad that they only attended our church for a year. After the prayer, while we were chatting, I learned how they came to our church. They happened to watch the Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony last year. They were shocked by the shameful manly appearances. They suddenly realized that they needed to raise their children well. Although the wife was a Buddhist and the husband was an atheist, they looked for a Christian school. The school they came to register their children in was Bethel Classical Academy. Then, they realized that Bethel Church is a Korean church. They began attending and found faith. Like this couple, people want to pursue the meaning and the value in life. England’s ‘quiet revival’ began with parents of children with desire to raise them well. While talking with a pastor of a neighboring church, he shared that the last Easter Sunday service had the largest attendance. I was thankful. I am thankful that we have a heart to long for eternity, understand and to pursue spiritual value. I pray that this quiet but definite revival will sweep through our Bethel Church as well.
