“나의 사랑하는 자가 내게 말하여 이르기를, 나의 사랑, 내 어여쁜 자야, 일어나서 함께 가자.”(아 2:10) 지난 주말, “Anthem”이라는 주제로 예삶 청3 공동체 수양회가 있었습니다. ‘앤썸(Anthem)’이란, 위키백과에 따르면 “국가 및 단체 등 특정 집단의 상징이며, 그 집단을 하나로 집약시키는 구심적 기능을 목적으로 사용되는 음악”을 의미합니다. 그래서 ‘national anthem’ 하면 자연스럽게 ‘국가(國歌)’를 떠올리게 되지요. 그렇다면 우리 그리스도인의 ‘anthem’이란 무엇일까요? 아마도 천국 시민권을 가진 자들만이 부를 수 있는 ‘하나님 나라의 국가’가 아닐까 생각해 봅니다. 그리고 믿는 자들을 하나로 모으는 구심적 기능을 가진 음악이 바로 ‘찬양’일 것입니다. 우리 신자들에게 ‘노래’는 단순한 감정의 표현을 넘어선, 빠질 수 없는 예배의 행위입니다. 성경 속 믿음의 선조들, 초대교회 성도들에게도 ‘경배와 찬양’은 언제나 살아 있었고, 멈춘 적이 없습니다.

우리가 자주 부르는 곡, 가장 자신 있는 노래를 흔히 ‘18번’이라고 부르지요. 즉, 반복적으로 즐겨 부르는 애창곡을 뜻합니다. 왜 그 노래를 좋아하느냐는 질문을 받는다면, 아마도 각자만의 특별한 이유가 있을 것입니다. 우리가 즐겨 부르는 찬양에는 그때의 경험, 감성, 그리고 무엇보다도 하나님과 함께한 향기로운 추억과 사연이 깃들어 있습니다. 요즘, 자주 듣고 부르시는 찬양이 있으신가요? 그 찬양에는 하나님을 향한 은밀하고도 특별한 나만의 믿음의 고백과 사랑이 담겨 있을 것입니다.

장례 예배를 집례할 때면, 참석한 모든 성도들과 조문객들이 함께 고인의 ‘애송 찬송’을 부르곤 합니다. 그분이 평소에 즐겨 부르던 찬송을 부를 때면, “이제는 하나님의 품 안에서 자신의 anthem song을 천국에서 우리와 함께 부르고 계시겠구나”라는 상상을 하게 됩니다. 그리고 영혼의 사랑이신 하나님과 함께 계신 그 성도님의 믿음의 고백이 담긴 이 찬송을 부를 때마다, 그분이 어떤 마음가짐과 신앙으로 살아오셨을지 자연스레 그려지곤 합니다. 그 순간, 은혜에 젖어 감격 속에 더욱 큰 목소리로 찬양하게 됩니다.

가장 즐겨 부르는 애송 찬송이 있으신가요? “ 보라 하나님은 나의 구원이시라 내가 신뢰하고 두려움이 없으리니 주 여호와는 나의 힘이시며 나의 노래시며 나의 구원이심이라 (사 12:2) 주님은 우리의 노래 중의 노래가 되십니다. 우리의 한숨을 주를 향한 찬양으로, 우리의 눈물을 소망의 노래로 바꾸시는 하나님을 찬양합니다. 나의 마지막 숨을 내쉴 그 순간, 어떤 찬양이 내 입에서 고백 될지를 생각해 봅니다. 우리는 지금 이 삶 속에서, 그리고 오늘 이 순간, 우리의 입술로 매일 찬양하며 살아가야 할 줄 믿습니다. 여전히, Jesus is our anthem song!

Anthem Song

My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me.”(Song of Sol 2:10) Last weekend, Yesalm Community’s group 3 held a retreat with a theme “Anthem.” According to Wikipedia, Anthem means a song with a purpose of uniting a specific group such as countries and organizations. Therefore, when you say a national anthem, we naturally think of patriotic song. If that is the case, what would be the anthem for Christians? We may think of a song for God’s Kingdom where only those with heavenly citizenship can sing. And the music of the central function of uniting believers as one would probably be praise songs. Beyond a simple expression of emotions, a praise is an act of worship that cannot be omitted by believers. Even for the forefathers of faith and members of the early churches, ‘worship and praise’ were always alive and never stopped.

We call our most confident and often sung song ‘Number 18.’ That describes our favorite song that we enjoy singing repeatedly. If a question is asked why we like the song, we each would have special reasons. Praise songs that we enjoy singing will have embedded memories of experience, emotion, and above all, fragrant memories and stories of being with God. Do you have a praise song that you sing and listen to often nowadays? In that praise song there is a quiet and special confession of faith and love that is uniquely yours.

When I preside over funeral services, believers and mourners in attendance will often sing the deceased’s favorite hymn. We imagine the deceased singing his/her anthem song with us in heaven in the arms of our Lord, as we sing the hymn that he/she enjoyed singing during his/her lifetime. And every time the hymn, which contains the confession of faith of the deceased who is with God, is sung, we naturally picture what kind of heart and faith he/she lived with. In that moment, we sing louder in the state of full grace and emotion.

Do you have a favorite hymn? “Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.” (Is 12:2) God is our song of songs. With our breath, let’s praise God who can change our tears to hope. Let’s think about what praise song will be your confession at the moment of your last breath. In this life, at this moment, I believe that we ought to live daily with praises on our lips. Still, Jesus is our anthem song!
