새봄을 시작하는 3월 첫 주, 일제의 지배에 항거하여 대한민국의 독립 의사를 세계만방에 알린 1919년 3월 1일을 기념하는 3.1절이 있었습니다. 일제강점기였던 당시, 각계각층을 대표하는 민족의 지도자들이 만든 독립선언서는 전국 각지로 보내졌습니다. 기미년 독립선언서는 이렇게 시작합니다. “우리는 이에 조선이 독립국임과 조선인이 자주민임을 선언한다. 이 선언을 세계 모든 나라에 알리어 인류 평등의 크고 바른 도리를 분명히 하며, 이것을 후손들에게 깨우쳐 우리 민족이 자기의 힘으로 살아가는 정당한 권리를 길이 지녀 누리게 하려는 것이다”. 저는 여기서 두 단어가 눈에 들어옵니다. ‘독립’과 ‘자주’입니다. 모든 사람은 하나님의 형상으로 창조되었기에 평등하며, 남의 간섭을 받지 않고 스스로 자기 일을 처리할 수 있어야 합니다. 이런 면에서 러시아의 우크라이나 침공은 북대서양 조약 기구(NATO)에 대한 러시아의 견제라지만, 한 민족의 자주와 독립을 짓밟은 행태라 할 수 있습니다.

한 개인의 인성 성장에도 ‘독립성’은 아주 중요하다고 합니다. 혼자 스스로 서는 책임 있는 사회 구성 요원이 되는 것은 건강한 사회와 공동체를 만들어 가는 데 있어서 매우 중요합니다. 위아래 권위도, 각 개인의 독창성과 기여도를 인정하면서 유지되어야 합니다. 나의 잘못에 대한 회개와 따라오는 책임은 각 개인의 독립과 자주성을 인정할 때만 가능합니다. 그러나 인성 개발에 ‘독립심’과 더불어 또 하나 중요한 것은 건강한 ‘의존성’입니다. 독립과 의존은 양립되는 개념 같지만, 실은 그렇지 않습니다. 독립심과 의존성이 양립해야 건강한 인격으로 자라 갈 수 있다고 심리학에서도 말하고 있습니다. 제대로 의존해 본 사람이 독립도 제대로 한다는 원리입니다. 아이들을 넷이나 키워본 저의 경험상 이 원리는 맞는 말입니다. 편안하게 다른 사람을 의지할 수 있는 사람이 홀로서기도 편하게 하고 독립심도 키워갑니다. 반대로 의존성이 부족한 사람은 주변 사람을 믿지 못하고, 건강한 인성을 키워가는 데 어려움을 겪게 됩니다.

기독교 교육은 한마디로 어렸을 때 부모를 믿고 의지하던 것을, 하나님을 믿고 의지하는 것으로 바꾸는 것이라고 합니다. 하나님을 의지하는 것을 잘 배운 사람이 타인에게 신뢰와 안정감을 줍니다. 하나님을 의존하며 사는 삶은 누가 보더라도 스스로 책임 있는 독립성을 갖추고, 남을 인도하는 리더십도 발휘하게 됩니다. 하나님을 전적으로 의존하는 자가 갈라진 홍해 바다 한가운데로 백성을 인도하여 건너게 할 수 있습니다. 하나님을 전적으로 의존하는 자가 중과부적의 전쟁에서도 당당히 적과 맞서 승리를 이끌어 내는 장수가 될 수 있습니다.

아직도 분단되어 있는 우리 조국을 위해 기도하며, 하나님을 전적으로 의존하는 백성으로 훗날 건강한 통일 독립국가로 서서, 주의 길을 예비하는 복음의 마지막 주자로 쓰임 받기를 기대합니다.

Independence and Dependence

First week of March, the beginning of spring season, marks Korea’s independence from Japanese occupation. We celebrate March 1st, as the day in 1919 we proclaimed our independence to the whole world. The nation’s leaders, representing all walks of life, wrote the Declaration of Independence and it was sent throughout the country. The Declaration of Independence begins like this. “We hereby declare that Joseon is an independent country, and that Koreans are self-reliant citizens. We declare this to all the nations in the world. We make clear the great and upright principle of human equality. This will be made known to our next generations, so that our people can enjoy the right to live on our own.” There are two words that catch my eyes, ‘Independence’ and ‘self-reliant’. All people are created in God’s image and, therefore, equal with others. They must be able to take care of their own without interference from others. From this perspective, Russia’s attack on Ukraine is Russia’s interference to NATO. Moreover, it is an act of trampling freedom and independence of a nation.

‘Independence’ is an important part of one’s character building. Being independent and responsible as a person is important in building a healthy society and community. Even in hierarchy of power, order must be maintained, recognizing individual’s creativity and contribution. The responsibility of repenting one’s wrong doing is only possible when individual’s independence and freedom are acknowledged. However, along with ‘independence’, there is another important aspect of character development, and that is ‘dependence’. This may seem like a contradictory concept between independence and dependence. In reality, that is not the case. Even in psychology, it is said that independence and dependence must co-exist in order to build a healthy character. It is on the principle that a person must know how to be dependent in order to become independent. After having raised four children, this principle is correct from my experience. A person who comfortably depend on others can easily stand on his own and build independence. On the contrary, a person who lacks dependence does not trust people, and the healthy character building is minimized.

Christian education is about switching one’s dependence on their parents to trust and dependence on God. People who can be trusted and are comfortable in that trust are those that have learned to depend on God. Life that depends on God, above all else, will have responsible independence and exercise leadership to guide others. When one completely depends on God, he can lead his people to cross the parted Red Sea. When one completely depends on God, he can become a leader who can, even in fierce battle, face his opponents and lead to victory.

I pray for our divided motherland. I pray that we would become people of a nation that depends on God completely. The united country would become a healthy independent nation that prepares the way for the Lord, and be used as the last evangelist for the Gospel.
