여전히 코로나 바이러스가 극성을 부리는 가운데, 현장 예배를 사모하는 성도들이 서서히 교회로 나오기 시작했습니다. 팬데믹 기간 중 현장예배가 문을 닫고, 온라인 외에는 예배드릴 다른 방법이 없었을 때도, 베델의 예배는 단 한 번도 중단되지 않았습니다. 성도님들이 교회로 나오는 것이 조금씩 늘어가는 가운데, 지난주에 열렸던 추수감사절 축제에는 코로나 이후 최대 인원인 1000여명(BGC 포함)의 성도님들이 모여서 마치 코로나와의 전쟁 승리를 선포하는 듯한 시간을 보냈습니다. 말씀과 기도를 멈추지 않고 코로나 숲을 뚫고 나왔고, 코로나 이후 다시 기쁨으로 리셋하며 달려왔습니다. 이런 가운데 열린 이번 추수감사절 축제는, 베델의 모두가 하나되어 달려왔음을 확실히 보여주는 한마당이었습니다. 그뿐만 아니라, 선물을 풍성히 나누도록 너그럽게 도네이션 해주신 성도님들의 교회 사랑은 뜨거운 열기로 가득했던 무대 퍼포먼스와 더불어 축제를 더욱 빛내주셨습니다. 연세 드신 장로님들이 앙증맞은 한복을 입고 춤을 추며, 남자 집사님들의 발레하는 모습은 우리 모두를 포복절도하며 눈물 날 정도로 웃게 했습니다. 목사님들도 망가지기를 마다하지 않고, 느끼함 연기에서부터 연지곤지 찍고, ‘숭구리당당 숭당당’까지 성도들과 한데 어우러졌습니다. 성도님들도 두 달 동안 함께모여 연습하면서 서로 얼마나 친해졌는지, 팬데믹 이후 갈급했던 친교의 유익과 기쁨을 마음껏 누렸습니다.

이렇듯 성도들이 하나 되어 기쁨을 누리는 모습을 보면서 저는 리더십을 배웁니다. 리더십은 섬김입니다. 섬김이 없었다면 축제는 없었을 것입니다. 맛있는 식사는 생각도 못했을 것입니다. 리더십은 교회를 위해 희생하는 것입니다. 리더가 희생하는 본을 보이지 못하면 성도들은 결코 능동적일 수 없고, 교회는 한 마음으로 기쁨을 누리지 못합니다. 리더십은 솔선수범입니다. 축제를 준비할 때부터, 끝까지 함께 하는 의리입니다. 리더십은 기꺼이 망가지는 것입니다. 사람 사이에 있을 수 있는 벽을 허물 수 있기 때문입니다. 그러면 친근해지고, 그러면 같이 웃게 됩니다.

저는 우리 교회에 이런 리더들이 많으심에 하나님께 감사합니다. 결코 쉽지 않았던 기간을 함께 견뎌오며 목회자들을 응원하고, 성도들을 섬겨주신 겸손한 리더 여러분들은 우리 교회의 자랑입니다. 이런 리더들을 교회적으로 세우는 날이 다가옵니다. 군림하는 리더가 아닌 섬기는 리더를 세우는 또 한 번의 축제가 되기를 기도합니다.

In the midst of the coronavirus still thriving, our church members who have longed for in-person worship slowly began to return. During the Pandemic, even when in-person worship was closed and online was the only available way to worship, our Bethel Church has continued to worship without ceasing not even once. Amid our church members returning little by little, at the Thanksgiving Festival last Sunday, we had the largest number of people gathering together since the Pandemic began – almost 1,000 church members (including the EM). It was like a time of declaring the victory in the war against the Corona. Without ceasing God’s Word or prayer, we broke through the Corona woods; and we have come running again as we reset our lives with joy. In the midst of all this, our Festival was an event that showed that we have come running together as one. Some church members, out of their love for the church, gave donations for generous sharing of gifts while others gave hot stage performances – together, they added fun and excitement to the Festival. Watching the older elders dancing in their adorable hanboks (traditional Korean clothes) and the male deacons performing ballet, we all laughed so hard holding our stomach until we cried. Even our pastors did not mind being playful and silly. By putting on some cheesy acts and doing funny dances, they became one with the church members. Growing closer while practicing together for the past two months, our church members enjoyed the benefits of fellowship that they have been yearning since the beginning of the Pandemic.

I learn leadership from seeing our church members rejoice together as one. Leadership is serving. If there were no serving, then there would have been no festival; and a delicious meal, unthinkable. Leadership is making sacrifices for the church. If a leader fails to set an example of sacrifice, then church members will never be actively involved and the church cannot rejoice as one. Leadership is taking the initiative to set an example. It is the loyalty of being together from the time of preparation to the end of the festival. Leadership is gladly making fun of oneself, because it can break down the walls existing between people. Then we can become closer and laugh together.

I thank God for having many such leaders in our church. We are proud of our humble leaders who have endured difficult times together – supporting our pastoral staff and serving our church members. As a church, the time is approaching to install such new leaders. I pray that it will be another festival of raising up the leaders who serve; and not those who lord it over.
