Race without Spectators

Tokyo Olympics that was postponed a year due to Coronavirus pandemic opened July 23rd. Some 10 thousand athletes from 207 countries made elaborate entrances into the arena, wearing many different colored masks. It is clear that this opening ceremony will be remembered as the quietest one. In this Olympics, many of the top athletes expecting to win gold medals are struggling and unexpected results are being made. Simon Biles, Queen of U.S. women’s gymnastics, who received 30 medals from world competitions and Olympics, including accolades as the greatest athlete in history, dropped out after one event in team gymnastics competition. “I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. Olympics is no joke.” Biles said during her press conference and revealed that she decided to drop out due to her mental health concerns.

With this incident, the Wall Street Journal pointed the source to ‘Coronavirus pandemic’. They analyzed that this caused tremendous mental pressure on athletes with just the fact that it was postponed a year. To train in isolation for a whole year in this uncertain situation surmounted to reaching extreme stress level. Especially, changes in race venue situation and competing without spectators were probably the greatest pressure for these athletes. For athletes, spectators are not just people watching from afar, but they are the source of strength for their races. For spectators, athletes are not just people who gives them moment of joy but main focus for cheering with all their hearts.

While Tokyo Olympics is proceeding without spectators, Tokyo Vision Church, our mission support church, opened English Camp and Vacation Bible School. Our mission team was not able to be there in person like before. Instead, it was an online mission with collaboration between Bethel KM, JM, EM, BYM, and Church School for the first time. We added Japanese subtitles to the videos made for our church’s VBS, and sent supplies for them. A week before VBS, we prayed every night with Missionaries Kang Minsook and Byun Sunyoung for souls of Japanese children. Then, on the first and last days of VBS, we connected with them online to Japanese time to share greetings. During VBS we sent daily video messages of encouragement to missionaries. Receiving strength from Jesus, the missionaries focused in Him with all their hearts to run the race. Bethel mission team relied on Jesus as center, who is our all, and did their best to cheer on. Unlike Olympics without spectators, the Vision Church’s VBS opened with passion beyond all other times. We want to give glory to God with eternal gold medal that is more precious than anything in this world. We look forward to being with the Vision Church in person, hopefully next year.
