Classmates for Faith in 21

Rev. Hong Sik Kim

I think Koreans in particular love classmates. The reason why we love to reunite with classmates, such as elementary classmates, military mates, and even postpartum recovery unit mates, is because they have shared memories, worries, and sufferings.

My wife loves ocean. She began playing soccer and jogging while raising three sons. She enjoys drinking a fragrant cup of coffee at the beach. But with desire to train our sons to not give up easily or become frustrated and to persevere, she takes them on hikes. She is becoming an iron woman. We hike at every opportunity. With a strong recommendation by a deacon, we went to Zion Canyon National Park Narrow Trail in summer of 2019. It was a course of about an hour walk and then another 2 hours walk against flowing water. At the start we vowed not to give up no matter how difficult the course may be. After an hour walk, the moment we stepped into flowing river, a thought came to my mind, ‘do we need to give up?’. Stepping into icy river water at 9:00a.m., we were at the point of giving up before we even started. We hesitated for a moment, but our family braved through the river one foot, one knee, and then waist high in water. We carried our youngest and held each other’s hands through strong current of the river. “Dad, be careful”, “Mom, are you okay?” Without giving up, we became one, worrying for each other from falling and getting swept from the current. We finished the course. It was hard on our body the next day. Enduring through difficulty together formed a special bond in our family. Whenever there are difficulties, we talk about that time. “Even though it’s hard, we can do it. Do you remember how we completed 6 hours of hiking?” “Water was like ice”. Testimony of how we suffered and walked as a family forged a bond as summer of 2019 Zion Canyon National Park Narrow Trail mates.

We are going through Coronavirus Wilderness together now. Going through the wilderness, hard times and overwhelming events will later become testimonies for our Bethel Church. 2020 was hard. We can overcome when we share our hearts with one another, share His grace, encourage each other when we feel overwhelmed and want to give up. It is my hope that we encourage and focus on His grace to go forth as one. This will remind us of the testimonies and keep us together and walk steadfast even at the face of even greater suffering.
