요즘 27살 아들이 매일 아침 일찍 일어나 운동을 합니다. 코로나 이후 재택근무를 하며 살이 좀 찌는 것 같더니, 몇 날 며칠을 아침마다 꾸준히 뛰는 것이었습니다. 아들에게 커피 한 잔을 내려주면서 아침마다 뛰게 된 이유를 물었습니다. 그때 아들이 한 말이 가슴에 남습니다. “Life is a matter of choice(삶은 선택의 문제입니다).” 어디서 듣고 와서 설교자인 아빠에게 ‘설교’ 하는지 모르지만, 사실 전적으로 동의가 됩니다.

오늘 내가 있는 이곳과 오늘 내 옆에 있는 사랑하는 사람들, 오늘 거울 속에 비치는 내 모습은 모두 나의 선택의 결과입니다. 전적인 내 의지의 선택이었건, 떠밀려 할 수 없이 했건, 나의 선택의 결과를 겸허히 받아들이며, 오늘 내가 선택한 것이 또 다른 결과를 만들어낼 것을 교훈 삼아 더 신중하고 지혜로운 선택을 해야 할 것입니다. 중요한 것은 예전의 나의 선택의 기준이 무엇이었으며, 오늘 나의 선택의 기준이 무엇인지를 비교하는 것입니다. 눈앞의 유익이었는지, 미래를 위한 투자였는지, 내 편의였는지, 교회 공동체를 우선시한 것이었는지, 혹은 유혹에 끌린 죄였는지, 하나님을 생각한 믿음이었는지, 그 기준을 확인하는 것이 중요합니다.

팬데믹이 교회적으로는 선택의 기회를 주었습니다. 교회에서 예배도 드릴 수 없었던 상황에서 다시 교회 문을 열면 어떤 모습일지 그 누구도 장담할 수 없었지만, 우리 자녀들을 위한 좀 더 안전하고 넓은 예배 공간을 확보해야 한다고 생각했습니다. 이미 비좁은 우리 교회 시설에서 최선을 다해 외부 확장을 꾀했지만, 역부족이었습니다. 지금 할 수 있는 선택은 기존 시설을 최대한 효율적으로 사용하는 것이었습니다. 결국, 기존의 식당 공간 외에는 아이들을 위한 예배 장소가 없었습니다. 주일 예배 후 밥상 교제의 중요성을 너무나도 잘 알고 있는 저의 관점에서 식당을 유지할 것인가, 아이들의 예배장소를 만들 것인가 라는 선택의 기로에서 교회 리더십은 다음 세대를 향한 예배의 자리를 선택했습니다. 절대 쉽지 않았습니다.

또 하나 팬데믹 상황에서 내린 중요한 선택은 기존 4개의 성가대와 2개의 오케스트라를 하나로 통합하여 베델 콰이어와 베델 오케스트라로 만드는 것이었습니다. 주일 1-3부, 헵시바 예배를 팬데믹 이후 변화에 맞춰 새롭게, 그리고 더 영광스럽게 세우려는 목적이었습니다. 그러나 통합된 베델 콰이어와 오케스트라를 어느 예배에 세우느냐는 또 다른 문제였습니다. 그때, 지금까지 장소가 없어서 중고등부가 합쳐서 예배를 드렸는데, 성가대 연습실을 중고등부가 사용할 수 있다면, 각각의 눈높이에 맞춰 예배를 드릴 수 있겠다는 제안이 들어왔습니다. 저희는 이때에도 다음 세대를 위해 베델 콰이어와 오케스트라를 모이기 제일 어려운 시간이지만, 1부에 세우고 주일 2, 3부 시간에는 성가대 연습실을 중고등부 예배실로 쓰기로 선택했습니다. 하나님이 이 선택을 축복하시리라 믿습니다.

Crossroad of Choices

My 27-year-old son wakes up early nowadays to exercise. He has been working at home due to Covid and seemed to have put on some weight, but he has been running diligently in the morning for many days. I made a cup of coffee for him and asked a reason for running in the morning. What he said remains with me. “Life is a matter of choice”. I don’t know where he heard this, but he was preaching to his dad, the preacher. And I completely agreed.

Where I am today, the loved ones who are with me today, and the image of myself in a mirror are all results of my choices. Whether it was completely of my own will or pushed into it with no other option, I have to accept the result of my choices. Taking the lesson of how my choice today will affect my future result, I must make prudent and wise choices. What is important now is to compare the standards in which my choices were made in the past and my choices of today. It is important to confirm what standard is used, whether it’s a visible benefit, future investment, convenience, church community as priority, temptation to sin, or faith in God.

Pandemic was an opportunity for church to make choices. After not being able to worship in church, if we were to open doors to worship, even when we couldn’t fathom what it would look like, our thoughts were on ability to secure bigger and safer worship rooms for our children. Our church facility is already tight. We have done all we could to expand, but it is still not enough. The choice we have now is to maximize efficient use of our current spaces. Aside from our cafeteria, there was no other place for children to worship. I understand the importance of fellowship in cafeteria after worship. Whether to keep the cafeteria or to turn it into a worship room for our children… was not an easy decision. At this crossroad of choice, our leadership chose worship room for our next generation.

Another important choice during this pandemic was to unify all 4 choirs into one Bethel choir and 2 orchestras into one Bethel orchestra. Purpose of these changes after pandemic was to lift up our worship to glorify Him even more through 1st -3rd worship services and Saturday early morning prayer (Hepzibah Worship). However, there was another issue of which service the choir and orchestra will serve. Because of lack of space, junior high and high school groups worshiped together until now. Suggestion was made that if choir practice room was available for youth group to worship, then each group can worship that is fitting for its age level. We made the choice for our next generation to let youth group worship in the choir practice room during 2nd and 3rd services. Although it is difficult, choir and orchestra will serve during 1st worship service. I believe God will bless these choices.
