Lessons Learned from Coronavirus 1

Rev. Bryan Kim

It has been almost a year since we weren’t able to worship in person. We sigh thinking about how difficult the year has been. However, we cannot deny the benefits that we have gained as we realized many things through Coronavirus. The greatest lesson is that we started thinking about what is essential and non-essential with everything. In a normal situation, it’s not easy for human to distinguish between essential and non-essential. From that context, God desires us to always examine priorities before taking action. He told us to “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness”. Since church could no longer gather as a community of faith, we began thinking about what must be done first. Along with sports games and concerts, churches were not allowed to gather. I naturally thought about what is the most essential for a church. Frankly, it didn’t take long before we began utilizing already established online system to worship. I believe this is a year of realizing the importance of worship as we reflect back on worship that was always available to us in the past.

There is a saying, ‘You’re not missed until you’re not there’. You don’t realize how much a person is missed or valued until the person is no longer there. Along with this saying, there is also “do the best while you can”. I think these fits perfect in terms of worship for believers. This was an opportunity to realize the importance of in-person worship and an opportunity to vow to give the best worship when in-person worship opens up.

As our online worship became our primary way of worship, it was an opportunity to realize the importance of worshiping with family. We see the value in worshiping with family that we didn’t realize before when we were worshiping with thousands of members. Family doesn’t just eat together, but we have realized that it is a spiritual community that worship together. Parental authority doesn’t come just by feeding your family, but their spiritual authority is given and realized when a worship is led by them. Children had opportunity to hear from their parents, not just sermons from children’s pastors. A new world opened up as children heard “let’s pray” from parents, not just from pastoral staff. Personally, it was an opportunity for my daughter to hear my messages for the first time in 30 years of my pastoral ministry as she started to attend 0 worship services. Now, we will open again on Lord’s Day for 1st and 2nd services to worship in-person, limited to 100 people. To those who will attend in-person worship, please come with attitude to represent one hundred members and give the holiest worship, greater than when there were thousands of people. You have the responsibility to give the most glorious worship and the privilege to apply the lessons learned from Coronavirus.
