친환경을 반대하는 사람은 없을 것입니다. 석탄을 때고, 원자력을 쓰는 시스템에서 태양광이나 풍력, 수력 등을 이용한 친환경 에너지로 전력을 공급하려고 온 세계가 총력을 기울이고 있습니다. 그런데, 지난 주(10.13) 뉴욕타임즈에서 이런 보도를 했습니다. 뉴욕 허드슨강 연안에 있는 원자로를 폐쇄하면서 2030년까지 주 전체 소비전력량의 50%를 친환경 에너지로 전환하기로 했지만, 에너지 재생산량이 부족해서 화력발전 의존도가 높아지면서 도리어 더 많은 이산화탄소를 배출하며 공기를 오염시키고 있다는 것이었습니다. 이러한 현상은 미국 뿐 아니라, 전 세계적으로 비슷합니다. 캘리포니아도 탈원전을 적극적으로 추진하면서 이제 마지막으로 Diablo Canyon 원전이 남았지만, 친환경 에너지가 충분히 생산되지 못해 개빈 뉴섬 주지사는 전력 공급을 늘리기 위해 아이러니하게 환경오염이 심한 디젤 발전기를 쉬지 않고 돌리도록 전력 회사에 명령을 내린 상태입니다. 영국은 대체 에너지인 천연가스 가격이 급등하여 공장이 멈추고, 전력 회사들이 파산 위기를 겪으면서 오히려 식량난의 위기 또한 고조되고 있으며, 독일의 경우는 기후의 변화로 바람이 잘 불지 않고, 구름 낀 날씨가 계속되어 풍력 및 태양광 에너지를 제대로 공급하지 못하여 다시 화력 발전소를 돌려 에너지를 확보하는 상황이라고 합니다. 태양과 바람을 만드시는 하나님을 인정하지 않고, 태양광을 만들고, 풍력 발전기를 만드는 똑똑한 인간에게 어떤 말씀을 하시는 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다.

신명기의 말씀이 기억납니다. “여호와께서 너희의 땅에 이른 비, 늦은 비를 적당한 때에 내리시리니 너희가 곡식과 포도주와 기름을 얻을 것이요”(신 11:14) 이스라엘의 농사는 전적으로 비에 의존합니다. 이른 비는 10월경, 늦은 비는 4월경에 내리는데, 하늘에서 비가 내리지 않으면 농사는 망하게 되어 있습니다. 인간이 아무리 좋은 작물을 개발해서 심는다고 할지라도 하나님이 비를 내리지 않으시면 망하듯이, 친환경 역시 좋은 아이디어이고, 다음 세대를 위해 꼭 해야 할 일이지만, 하나님이 태양을 가리고, 바람을 막으시면 무용지물임을 다시 한번 깨닫습니다.

이사야 말씀에 “여호와의 말씀에 내 생각은 너희 생각과 다르며 내 길은 너희의 길과 다름이니라 (중략) 하늘이 땅보다 높음 같이 내 길은 너희 길보다 높으며 내 생각은 너희 생각보다 높음이니라”(사 55:8, 9)라고 했습니다. 사람의 생각이 기발해 보여도, 하나님을 제외한 생각은 결국 해가 되어 돌아올 수 있음을 상기시켜줍니다. 하나님 없이는 문명의 이기와 혁신적인 기술로 ‘친환경’을 만들 수 없다는 사실에, 사람은 하나님 앞에 정말 겸손해야 함을 다시 한번 깨닫습니다.

Green Energy Harms Environment

No one opposes green energy environment. The entire world is focused on providing green energy using solar and water, away from the system of burning coals and nuclear energy. However, an article was reported in The New York Times(10/13). While closing down a nuclear power plant by Hudson River, the plan was to move 50% of state’s energy consumption to green energy by 2030. But because of insufficient production of green energy, dependence on thermal power plants increased, discharging more carbon dioxide and polluting the air. This is not only in the U.S., but the entire world is facing similar situation. California is also promoting nuclear phase-out. Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant is the only one left. Because there is not enough green energy being produced, in order to increase the power supply, ironically, Governor Newsom has ordered continuous operation of diesel generators which cause severe environmental pollution. In England, soaring natural gas prices stopped factory operations. Power generation companies are in danger of shutting down, and food crisis is also on the rise. In case of Germany, there is not enough wind due to climate change. With continuous cloudy weather, they are not able to provide enough wind and solar power energies. Their nuclear power plants are operating again to secure enough energy. I think God is trying to tell us, smart people who can make solar panels and wind mills without recognizing that God made the sun and the wind, something.

I am reminded of Deuteronomy. “He will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil.”(Deut 11:14) Farming in Israel depended on rain. Early rain comes in October and late rain comes in April. If there is no rain, farming fails. No matter how much people develop and plant good seeds, if God doesn’t give us rain, they all fail. Green energy is a good plan and this is something we must do for our next generations. But we realize once again, if God blocks the sun and stops the wind, it is useless to try.

In Isaiah, it says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”(Is 55:8,9) This reminds us that no matter how innovative people are, when we eliminate God, it can harm us. The truth is that, without God, we cannot make ‘Green Energy’ with advancement in civilization and innovative technology. Once again, we must be truly humble before God.
