BOGO Pizza

Rev. Bryan Kim

My family gathered together for dinner in a long time. To be more accurate, we didn’t come together on purpose, but I happened to be home at dinner time. I said “Let’s eat out. I’m buying”. My son wanted to order in pizza. Since it’s been awhile, I said I wanted to eat some thing better. He said pizza is ‘BOGO’. I thought there must be ‘BOGO’ Pizza. I found out that it’s an acronym for “Buy One, Get One Free! Shortly two pizzas were delivered, having only paid for one. We ate and were full. Somehow BOGO pizza seemed tastier. Perhaps it was because one was free.

When I hear BOGO, there are biblical persons that come to my mind. They are Laban’s two daughters, Lea and Rachel. Jacob, who was working for his uncle Laban, fell in love with his uncle’s second daugh ter Rachel. Older sister Lea was a pitiful girl who was not attractive and lived with inferiority complex. This dad of two daughters makes an employment contract with Jacob who loved Rachel, with hope of sending his older daughter Lea with it. As a dowry for Rachel, Jacob got Lea for free

Lea was the older sister but was also wife. But she always came sec ond to her sister Rachel when it came to her husband’s love. We feel compassion of BOGO for unloved Lea. God poured His grace on Lea. Lineage of Messiah comes from Lea, not Rachel. Is it because we are also BOGO that we feel a certain pull towards Lea?

Bible says we were bought with the price of Christ (1Co 6:20). It says we were bought with dowry of bride Jesus, the price of His blood. We were bought as BOGO in the price of Christ’s blood. If it wasn’t for Ra chel, Lea might have never married. In the same way, if it were not for Jesus, we would remain sinners who could never join in God’s table. But we have become the subject of this benefit, that we can come for free with the price of Jesus. This is the grace, thrill, and that we are grateful for. Living and breathing is for free. Worshiping together at Bethel is for free. We have been given today to love for free. To morrow is Valentine’s Day. We have another opportunity to give and receive love. May you have a blessed BOGO day, all because of Jesus.
