지나온 인생을 떠올려 보면 누구에게나 뵙고 싶은 선생님이 한두 분쯤은 있을 것입니다. 어떤 선생님은 내 인생의 길을 찾게 해 주셔서 현재의 모습으로 살 수 있도록 큰 영향을 끼쳐 주신 분으로서, 스승의 날이면 마음에 사무치게 떠오르는 분이기도 합니다. 저에게도 여러 스승이 계시는데, 목회와 구속사적 설교가 무엇인지 가르쳐 주신 스승, 김한요 담임목사님 그리고, 부부란 어떤 관계여야 하고 가정은 어떠해야 하는지를 가르쳐 주신 대니얼 오 선교사님 부부가 계십니다. 참으로 감사한 선생님은, 과학 선생님이시고 초등학교 6학년 담임이셨던 저에게 IT기술에 대한 소질이 있음을 발견하시고, 개인적으로 컴퓨터 관련 기술을 가르쳐 주시며, 관심을 가져주신 이종기 선생님이셨습니다. 그러고 보니, 이제껏 기억에 남는 스승님들은 지식을 전달해 주신 분들이 아니라, 제 인격과 삶을 통해 사랑으로 관심을 베풀어 주신 분들이셨습니다.

하지만, 지금은 테크놀로지의 발달로 도래한 빅데이터 시대를 맞아, 방대한 지식과 데이터들이 온라인에 넘쳐나면서 요즘 시대의 스승은 구(구글, Google) 선생님과 유(유튜브, Youtube) 선생님만 있으면 되는 형국입니다. 문제는 영, 혼, 육을 소유하고 인격적 관계 속에서 살도록 지음 받은 인간이 비인격적인 AI 알고리즘에 의해 만들어지는 관계에 의해 자유가 제한되고 있으며, 심지어 신앙의 영역까지 영적이지 않은 요소들로 가득 채워지고 있다는 것입니다. 참 스승의 본질은 지식 전달에 있지 않고 인격적인 관계를 통해 느껴지는 사랑과 전수, 격려와 선한 영향력 등인데, 점점 그러한 요소가 사라지는 듯하여 몹시 안타깝습니다.

디모데는 최고의 영적 스승인 바울을 만나 거짓 없는 믿음을 가지고 눈물과 기도로 성도들을 돌보는 참 목자의 길을 걸을 수 있었고, 열두 제자는 참 스승이신 예수님을 만났기에 영원한 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 있었으며, 복음을 위하여 목숨을 내어주는 삶을 살았습니다. 엘리사 또한, 엘리야로부터 갑절의 영감을 받아 시대를 이끄는 영적 지도자가 되었습니다. 비록 우리가 살고 있는 이 시대가 구(Google) 선생과 유(Youtube) 선생이 대세인 시대가 되었지만, 베델교회는 이 세상과 같지 않음을 성경을 통하여 확인하고 예수님이 우리의 참 스승 되심과 우리가 서로의 스승이 되어 선한 영향력을 끼칠 것을 결단하며, 교회를 굳게 세워나가야 할 것입니다. 비인격적 요소가 일반적인 것이 되어 버린 시대에, 서로의 삶을 책임지는 그리스도인의 모습을 갖추어 이 시대 스승의 사명을 감당하는 베델 교회가 되길 소망합니다.

Regretful Generation of Teacher Google and Teacher YouTube

As we look back on life, we all have a couple of teachers that we long to see. Some teachers helped us find our path in life. They had great influence in the person that we are today. These teachers come to mind on every Teacher Appreciation Day. I too had many teachers in my life. Jesus is my teacher. Personally, our senior pastor Rev. Brian Kim has been a teacher who taught me about ministry and what salvation sermon is. My wife and I also have a missionary Daniel Oh and his wife who taught us the relationship of a married couple and what a family is, when we were going through a turbulent time in our relationship. I am truly grateful to Teacher Lee Jong-gi who was my 6th grade and science teacher. He discovered that I had a knack for IT and personally taught me computer technology. Looking back, all these teachers I fondly remember not only delivered knowledge, but they showed me love and interest in my character and life.

With today’s advancement in technology, in this big data era, huge knowledge and data are being accumulated online, making Google and YouTube the only teachers seem needed in this new generation. We are created to live in spirit, mind, and body. We have human relationships. Instead, our relationships are formed, dependent on impersonal AI algorhythms, limiting out freedom. Even in the field of faith, it is filled with elements that are not spiritual. The core of a true teacher is not in the delivery of knowledge, but in love and deliverance of encouragement and influence. I am saddened that we live in a time where those elements seem to disappear.

Timothy was able to walk the true pastorship of caring for his congregation with his genuine faith, tears, and prayers because he met his spiritual teacher, Paul. Twelve disciples were able to see the heavenly kingdom and give up their lives for the gospel because they met Jesus, the true teacher. Elisha was doubly inspired by Elijah and became a spiritual leader of his time. Although we are living in a trendy time of teacher Google and teacher YouTube, Bethel Church community, by believing the Bible and knowing that Jesus is our true teacher, must resolve to build a church where we are each other’s teachers by godly influences. In this age where impersonal elements have become the norm, may our Bethel Church community be able to accomplish the responsibility of being a teacher by being responsible for one another in the image of Christ.
