코로나 19라는 세계적 유행병으로 100일 이상 집에서 머물고, 행정명령으로 제한된 일터의 환경으로 많은 비즈니스가 더 이상 견딜 수 없어 문을 닫는 상황이 벌어지고 있습니다. 백화점 니만 마커스와 제이씨 페니도 파산 신청을 한 상태이고, 우리가 즐겨 찾던 숲플랜테이션(Soup Plantation)도 이제 다시는 갈 수 없는 식당이 되었습니다. 이런 상황 속에서도 영세한 비즈니스를 일으켜 보려고 새롭게 단장하며 하루하루 기다리다가 드디어 차도 가장자리(curbside)에서 손님들이 물건을 픽업할 수 있다는 말에, 의욕적으로 새 물건을 입하하여 가게 문을 열려는 순간, 조지 플로이드 사건이 터지면서 폭도로 변한 시위대가 많은 상점들에 침입하여 이제 막 문을 연 가게들의 물건들을 약탈해 가는 일이 벌어졌습니다.

무릎으로 조지 플로이드의 목을 누르는 무표정한 경찰의 모습에 우리는 너무나 놀랐고, 숨을 못 쉬겠다고 그렇게도 애원하는 사람을 결국 질식시켜 죽이는 모습에 우리 모두는 분노했습니다. 무자비한 인권탄압에 맞선 데모가 미 전역으로 앞다투어 확산되면서, 흑인들을 노예로 유린했던 미국의 뼈 아픈 과거가 다시 한번 도마에 오르게 되었습니다. 1963년, 워싱턴 DC 광장에서 외쳐졌던 마틴 루터 킹 박사의 “나는 꿈이 있습니다”라는 연설이 있은지 반세기가 다 되도록 여전히 이런 일이 생기는 것을 보며, 인간의 죄성은 정말 고쳐지지 않는다는 생각이 들었습니다.

이러한 저의 생각은 평화적 시위대가 돌변하여 상점들을 유린하는 모습을 보면서 더 확고해졌습니다. 부당한 인권탄압을 외치는 시위대가 어떻게 남의 재산을 저렇게 강탈해 갈 수 있다는 말입니까? 시위대를 가장한 못된 자들의 소행이라고 하지만, 1992년 엘에이 폭동을 겪었던 교포들에게는 공포의 트라우마가 다시 시작되는 아픔이었습니다. 시위하는 대열에 뛰어들어 힘을 보태고 싶었는데, 결국 자신들의 분노와 울분을 토해내며 남의 것을 약탈함으로 자신들이 당했던 한을 푸는 기회로 삼는 모습은 인간의 또 다른 악한 모습임이 분명했습니다.

우리가 애송하는 시편 8편의 “사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까?”라는 말씀이 생각납니다. 힘이 있으면 남의 목을 사정없이 눌러 죽이고, 약하고 힘이 없으면 있는 자들의 것을 맘대로 약탈해도 된다는 잘못된 개인 인권주의의 만용을 보면서, 사람은 정말로 하나님이 생각하실 가치도 없는 존재임에도 여전히 하나님은 그런 인간을 잊지 않고 마음에 두고 계신다는 것에 가슴 한편이 저려옵니다. 하나님의 인내는 정말 어디까지 갈까요? 이러한 시대적 아픔 속 에서도 우리 성도들은 자신의 죄의 깊이를 들여다보는 기회로 삼고, 거룩하신 하나님이 나 같은 죄인을 괘념하고 계심을 잊지 말고, 우리와 우리 자 녀들이 사는 미국이 개인의 인권과 남의 권리를 소중하게 여길뿐 아니라, 더욱 성경적인 가치관을 옹호하는 나라가 되도록 기도해야 할 것입니다.

What is Man

We have been staying home for 100 days due to worldwide infectious disease called Covid 19. Because of government mandate, much of our work places have been constrained. Many of the businesses have suffered and are closing down. Department stores like Neiman Marcus and JC Penny’s have filed for bankruptcy. We can no longer go to our beloved restaurant, Soup Plantation. Even under this situation, small businesses have been waiting and refurbishing. With allowance of curbside pickups, they opened with enthusiasm and new products. However, the moment they opened their doors, George Floyd incident happened. Some of protesters turned into mobs invading many of these stores that just opened, and they began looting.

We were stunned and angered by the image of expressionless police officer with his knee on George Floyd’s neck, and ultimately killing him by suffocation even after pleading that he couldn’t breath. Demonstrations have spread throughout US, calling it blatant violation of human rights. The painful history of black slavery has resurfaced on the chopping block. It has been almost half a century since Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech on Washington DC Square in 1963, but these things are still happening. What came to my mind was that the sinfulness of mankind cannot be changed.

This thought was confirmed as I watched the peaceful protesters suddenly turn and start looting stores. How could protesters crying out human rights violate and seize someone else’s property? They say these are bad people disguised as protesters. To those in Korean community who experienced 1992 LA riot, this was yet another painful reminder and trauma of fear. I wanted to jump in and join the protesters, but just watching the images of evilness of some of them was enough. In anger, they took advantage of the situation and plundered properties of others.

I am reminded of Psalms 8, “what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” As I witnessed incorrect individual human rights play out where if you are strong you can press on the neck of another to kill, if you are weak and without strength it’s okay to loot others’ possessions; I realize that man is not worthy of God to even think about. Still, God doesn’t forget about us and keeps us in his heart. How far will God’s mercy extend? In this situation, we must pray that our congregation will take this opportunity to see the depth of our sin, and not forget that holy God cares for sinners like us. We pray that this country where our children live will place value on individual human rights and rights of others, but will become a country that advocates Biblical values.
