코로나 사태로 모든 사역들이 온라인으로 전환되어 예배뿐 아니라, 제자훈련과 소그룹 모임, 또한 기도회까지도 온라인으로 실시하고 있습니다. 담당 사역자들이 온라인의 한계를 호소하지만, 그나마 온라인으로 사역들이 멈추지 않고 진행되는 것으로 감사할 뿐입니다. 최근에 모 교단은 총회를 온라인으로 했다는 소식을 들었습니다. 수백 명이 모여 3-4일 동안 호텔 컨퍼런스룸을 빌려 진행했던 회의를 온라인으로 했다는 것은, 시공을 넘어 비용 절감면에서 파격적인 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 이런 면에서 선교회의 모임도 온라인으로 대체되고 있습니다. 특별히 전 세계에 흩어져 있는 선교지역을 향해 그 현장을 직접 가보는 일의 유익은 아무리 강조해도 지나침이 없지만, 세계적으로 팬데믹이 퍼진 상황에서 방역과 위생을 보장할 수 없는 현장에, 단기 선교를 한 두 주 직접 다녀오는 것은 더 이상 쉬운 일도 아니며, 선교적 효과도 고려해야 할 문제입니다.

이번 코로나 사태는 지역으로 나누는 전도와 선교의 구분이 더 이상 의미가 없고, 온 세계가 지구촌인 것을 상기시켰습니다. 그리고, 직접 가는 선교와 온라인으로 후방 지원하는 사역의 긴장이 코로나 이후 꽤 오랜 시간 지속될 것으로 내다봅니다. 이때, 선교 전문가들은 후방에서 은혜받고, 선교사로 헌신하고, 신학교 교육을 받고, 그리고 선교 훈련을 받고, 후원 교회와 후원 자들을 모집한 후, 선교 현장까지 가는 오랜 기간이 걸리는 선교 모델에서, 컴퓨터에서 한 번의 클릭으로 선교지와 바로 연결되는 온라인 선교 시스템 으로 전환하는 모델을 제시해야 할 것입니다. 물론 온라인 예배가 오프라인 예배를 대치할 수 없는 부분이 있듯이, 온라인 선교가 직접 그 땅을 밟는, 가는 선교사를 대치할 수 없는 부분이 있습니다. 우리 가운데서 직접 선교사를 파송하는 동시에, 선교 현장에서는 현지인들을 세워 일하게 하는 시스템을 만들어야 할 것입니다. 예를 들면, 선교 현장을 선교 후원지와 연결하고, 투명한 사역 교환과 책임있는 재정 후원을 할 수 있도록 신뢰를 구축하는 것입니다. 이미 이러한 시대의 변화에 발 빠르게 움직인 선교단체들도 있지만, 이제는 더 이상 미뤄서는 안 될 일이 되었습니다. 현장을 직접 나가지 않고 돕는 선교는, 이미 현장에 나가있는 선교사라는 인적 자원을 어떻게 활용하며, 각 선교단체에서 파송한 선교사들끼리 더욱 잘 협력할 수 있도록 신뢰망을 구축하는 것이 관건이 될 것입니다. 인력자원과 전략을 공유한다는 면에서 선교단체들의 협력 및 병합도 코로나 이후 기대되는 모습입니다.

선교단체가 준비해야 할 또 한 가지는, 양질의 선교사들을 파송하도록 맞춤형 훈련 프로그램을 준비하는 것입니다. 지금까지는 전형적인 목회자 출신 선교사를 파송하는 것이 주였다면, 이미 베델이 체감하고 있는 것처럼 평신도 선교사 파송과 자비량 선교 등이 지교회에 빠른 속도로 주를 이루게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 우리 교회는 외부 선교단체와 연결하여 일반적으로 필요한 선교훈련을 받고 선교지로 나가지만, 좀 더 구체화되고 전문화된 훈련이 요구된다고 하겠습니다.

Due to Coronavirus, all of our ministries have moved to online. Not just worship services, but Discipleship Training, small groups, and prayer meetings are all being conducted online. Pastors in charge of these ministries tell me about limitations of having online classes, but I am just thankful that we can continue the ministry work without stopping. Recently I heard that one denomination held a general meeting via online. This would have been a meeting of hundreds of people over 3-4 days in hotel conference rooms. Besides time and space, cost savings of doing this online must have been unprecedented. Missions meetings are being replaced with online as well. I can’t stress enough the benefits of visiting mission fields scattered throughout the world. However, with pandemic it is no longer feasible to go to mission fields for two weeks in areas where medical prevention and hygiene is not guaranteed. The effectiveness of missions must be studied as well.

There is no geographical distinction for Coronavirus, and differentiating types of missions and evangelism no longer has any meaning where the whole world is a global village. Hardship on the ministry of having people go in person and online support from behind will continue for the foreseeable future, even after Coronavirus. From blessings of being called and committing to become a missionary, attending seminary, training for missions, seeking out churches and supporters, and then finally going to mission field took a long time for missionaries. Now we change this model to online system where you get connected to mission fields with one click of computer. Of course, like there are parts of offline worship that cannot be replaced with online, missionaries in mission field cannot be replaced by online mission. We will have to put a system in place to send out missionaries while calling on local people in mission fields to step up. For example, we will need to connect mission fields with our mission supports. With transparent ministry exchanges and responsible financial support, we can begin to build trust. There are some mission organizations that have quickly moved onto this direction. This is something we can no longer put off. Doing mission work without actually going to a mission field means utilizing the resources of missionaries that are already in place and building a trusted network of missionaries that have been sent out by mission organizations to collaborate. After Coronavirus, we can anticipate much collaboration of mission organizations on human resources and strategies.

Another work mission organizations need to prepare for, which Bethel has already been doing, is to send lay people as missionaries with support and quickly place them in the local churches. To accomplish sending out quality missionaries, we must prepare a training program that fits this model. Our church is connected with outside mission organizations to do necessary training before missionary is sent out. Now what is required is more detailed and refined professional training.
