‘나비 효과’라는 단어가 있습니다. 나비의 날갯짓 하나가 대륙을 넘어 폭풍을 일으킬 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 별 의미 없어 보이는 행동도 나중에 큰 파장을 가지고 올 수 있다는 의미입니다. 그런 의미에서 새생명 축제는 ‘나비 효과’입니다. VIP 작정과 리본이 별 의미 없어 보일 수 있지만 새생명축제는 복음의 광풍을 몰고 올 작은 날개 짓입니다.

고등학교 시절 전학을 하면서 외롭고 힘들던 때가 있었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 우리 집에 엽서 하나가 도착했습니다. 지금도 엽서에 예쁜 손글씨로 쓰인 제 이름이 기억납니다. 순간 마음이 얼마나 두근거렸는지 모릅니다. 누가 나에게 엽서를 보냈을까? 서둘러 읽어보니 교회에서 보낸 엽서였습니다. 예쁜 손 글씨로 안부를 물어보며 제 생일을 축하한다는 내용이었습니다. 그리고 귀여운 스티커도 붙어 있었습니다. 시간이 흘러 내용은 희미하지만, 그때 제 마음의 감동은 아직도 선명합니다. 외로웠던 마음을 따뜻하게 해준 편지였고 그 주일에 바로 교회에 갔고 그 이후 단 한 번도 떠난 적이 없습니다.

이 내용을 제자훈련 하면서 훈련생들과 나누었습니다. 그때 저희 훈련생 한 분이 간증을 나누어 주셨습니다. 고등부 학생 시절 ‘전도부’에서 주일 예배에 빠진 친구들에게 엽서를 쓰는 봉사를 했는데 영혼 구원이나 길 잃은 양을 찾는 마음은 아니었고 얼굴도 이름도 모르는 친구에게 그냥 편지를 썼다고 합니다. 그렇게 몇백 통을 썼지만, 한 번도 엽서 잘 받았다 인사하는 친구도, 엽서 받고 교회 왔다는 친구도 만난 적이 없었습니다. ‘의미’를 알지 못했던 엽서는 그때 그 일로 잊었다고 합니다.

그러다 제가 고등학교 시절 교회에서 온 손 편지 받고 감동했다고 이야기하자 깜짝 놀랐다고 합니다. 그분 표현으로 갑자기 수십 년을 거슬러 올라가 본인이 쓴 수백 장의 엽서들이 보였다고 합니다. 그때 지난 25년 동안 쉬지 않고 일하신 하나님이 보였고 엽서를 받은 친구가 지금 어디선가 목사님이 되고 선교사가 되어 복음을 전한다고 생각하니 마음에 감격이 넘쳤다고 합니다.

이 마음 가지고 우리는 VIP를 초청하고 특별 새벽기도에 함께 기도하기를 원합니다. 하나님은 ‘작은 헌신’을 통하여 쉬지 않고 일하고 계십니다. 하나님의 때에 VIP가 주님을 만났다는 그 간증을 들을 날을 기대합니다. 나비의 날갯짓이 저 먼 대륙에 폭풍을 일으키듯이, 우리의 작은 리본이 복음의 바람을 불어올 줄 믿습니다. 이 ‘리본 효과’가 새생명 축제에 넘치기를 소망합니다!

Re-Born Effect

There is a thing called the butterfly effect. It describes that one flutter of a butterfly wing can cross a continent to cause a storm. It means that a small, meaningless occurrence can influence a huge complex system. From that perspective, our New Life Celebration is the ‘butterfly effect’. Designating a VIP and Re-born blog may not seem much, but the New Life Celebration is the flutter of a small wing that could bring about huge waves of the Gospel.

While I was in high school, I went through a very lonely and difficult time after transferring schools. One day a postcard was delivered to my home. I still remember the pretty penmanship that spelled out my name. At that moment, my heart was beating fast. Who would send me a postcard? I quickly read to find out that it was from church. It was a pretty hand written note asking how I was doing and wishing a happy birthday. It even had a cute sticker on it. Much time has passed now. I don’t remember the exact words, but I clearly remember, even now, how my heart felt. It was a postcard that comforted my lonely heart. It remembered my birthday, my summer birthday that was forgotten by everyone. I went to church the very next Sunday, and I have never left since.

I shared this story with my students during a discipleship training class. Then one of my students shared a testimony. She served on the ‘Evangelism Team’ in high school. She wrote postcards to students who missed worship that day. It wasn’t that she was interested in saving souls or to find lost sheep. She just wrote letters to people who were nameless and faceless to her. She wrote several hundreds of postcards, but no one ever acknowledged receiving a postcard or met anyone who said they came to church because of her postcard. She didn’t understand the ‘meaning’ behind these postcards, and has forgotten about it.

She was surprised to hear my story of going back to church after having received a hand written postcard during the lonely and difficult time in high school. She said it was like going back decades of years and seeing hundreds of postcards she wrote. She saw God working for 25 years non- stop. The thought that someone who received her postcard could be a pastor or a missionary somewhere spreading the gospel overwhelmed her heart with emotion.

With this overwhelming heart, we invite our VIPs. We want to pray together during our special early morning prayer. Our invitation and prayer may seem like those meaningless postcards, but it is through these ‘small sacrifices’ that God is working non-stop. We look forward to hearing from our VIPs one day, in God’s time, of their testimonies of meeting God. Like a small flutter of a butterfly wing that crosses a continent and cause a storm in a faraway land, I believe our small Re-born effect will cause winds of the Gospel to blow. May this ‘Re-born Effect’ overflow at our New Life Celebration!
