일상을 떠나 여행하는 것은 낯선 문화에 대한 새로운 시각을 갖게 해줄 뿐만 아니라 일상에 매몰되어 어느새 무뎌져 버린 감각을 깨워 주기도 합니다. 지난달 베델의 성도분들과 함께 다녀온 그리스 이집트 성지답사는 만만치 않은 일정이었지만, 성경을 보다 현장감 있게 이해할 수 있는 큰 유익이 있었고 더불어 내 삶의 주인에 대해 고민해 보는 깊은 여운이 남는 여정이었습니다.

이번 답사 내내 유독 머리가 계속해서 눈에 들어왔습니다. 잘 아시는 것처럼 이집트 기자(Giza)의 피라미드를 지키는 거대한 스핑크스는 힘을 상징하는 사자의 몸에, 지혜를 상징하는 사람의 커다란 머리를 가지고 있습니다. 그리고 파라오의 무덤과 신전을 둘러보면 이집트인들이 숭배하는 사상에 따라 양, 매, 자칼, 땅돼지, 따오기 등 여러 동물의 머리를 가진 신들이 곳곳에 그려져 있습니다.

그리고 그리스의 고대 도시였던 고린도의 입구에 있는 박물관 코트야드에는 머리가 잘린 몸만 있는 수많은 조각상이 즐비하게 세워져 있습니다. 고대에 조각상을 만들어 팔던 업자들이 하체인 몸을 체구별로 미리 다양하게 만들어 놓고, 동상을 주문하면 곧바로 주문한 사람의 머리만 만들어 적당한 몸에 끼워 팔았다고 합니다. 그리고 기독교 시대가 열리면서 이 조각상을 우상으로 여겼던 사람들이 그 머리들을 손쉽게 뽑아내 버렸다고 합니다.

무엇보다도 빌립보의 루디아 기념교회에 있는 참수되었던 세례 요한의 모습을 그려놓은 성화를 잊을 수 없습니다. 소반에는 세례 요한의 머리가 담겨있고, 요한의 몸에는 같은 듯 하나 뭔가가 조금은 다른 이의 머리가 그려져 있었습니다. 안내해 주시던 목사님께서 요한의 몸에 그려진 머리는 바로 예수님이라고 하시면서 요한은 죽었지만, 그는 교회의 머리 되신 예수로 살았다고 하셨습니다.

인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다고 하셨던 예수님의 말씀처럼 예수님께서 거하실 공간조차 두지 않은 채 나로 가득 찬 삶을 살고 있지는 않았는지 돌아봅니다. 머리와 꼬리를 자르고 어떤 일의 요점만을 간단히 말하는 것을 ‘거두절미’라고 합니다. 오늘도 우리에게 새날을 허락하신 예수 그리스도 앞에서 비록 여전히 부족한 자일 수밖에 없겠지만, 날마다 나는 죽고 나의 머리 되신 예수로 살고, 지나온 길에 나의 흔적을 남기지 않고 예수만 남도록 나의 꼬리를 자르는 예수 그리스도 중심의 거두절미- 심플라이프를 살아보렵니다.

Traveling away from the everyday life, not only gives you a new perspective through a foreign culture, but it also awakens you from the feeling of being buried in everyday routines. The recent visit to the Holy Sites in Greece and Egypt with the members of Bethel was quite the challenging schedule, but it was a great benefit to understand the Bible more realistically, and it was a journey that left a deep impression in that I contemplated about the Master of my life.

Throughout this trip, ‘the head’, in particular, kept catching my eye. As you well know, the giant Sphinx, which guards the pyramid of the Egyptian Giza, has the body of a lion, which symbolizes power, and a large head of a man, which symbolizes wisdom. And when you look around the Pharaoh’s tomb and temple, there are idols with multiple heads of various animals, such as sheep, hawks, jackals, and land pigs, depending on the gods worshipped by the Egyptians.

The museum courtyard at the entrance of Corinth, an ancient City of Greece, is well known with numerous statues with only a body without the head. It is said that the workers who made and sold these sculptures prepared various shapes of the lower body in advance, and when they receive the orders, they would just make the head of the person and place it on top of the suitable body. Thus, with the opening of the Christian era, people who considered these sculptures as idols would easily pull off the heads from the body.

Above all, I cannot forget the sacred statue depicting the beheaded John the Baptist at the Lydia Memorial Church in Philippi. The head of John the Baptist was contained on a tray, but I noticed something was different in the drawings of his body, even though it appeared to be the same body of John the Baptist. The pastor who guided our group explained that the head drawn on John’s body was actually the head of Jesus, and further explained that although John died, it was to symbolize Jesus Who is now the Head of the Church.

As I remember the words of Jesus, that the Son of Man had no place to rest His head, I wonder if I am living a life filled with my own desires without even considering any space for Jesus. “Epigrammatic Expression” means to cut out the introduction(head) and the conclusion(tail) and provide concise facts of the issue. (ex. Cut to the Chase) Jesus Christ Who allowed this new day, though we still have shortcomings, I convict myself to die every day and to live by Jesus Who is my Master. and I will live a simple life centered on Jesus by leaving no trace of myself and by cutting off my “tail” so that only Jesus remains.
