얼마 전 부 목사님들과 점심을 먹으면서 함께 짧은 영상 하나를 보게 되었습니다. 그 영상의 내용은 아이를 다섯명을 둔 젊은 한인 부부의 이야기였습니다. 청년 때에 미국으로 건너와 한국 노량진 고시촌의 수험생들이 즐겨 먹던 ‘컵밥(cup bab)’ 이라는 음식이 이 미국 사람들도 분명히 좋아할 것이라는 생각이 들어 미국 유타주에서 푸드트럭 한 대로 장사를 시작하였습니다. 현재는 수십 개의 프랜차이즈로 세워지고, 약 1,500억 원의 가치를 가진 회사로 일구어 냈습니다.

그 영상에서 남자 사장님의 인상 깊은 말이 있었습니다. “저는 이 컵밥이 너무 좋습니다. 그래서 이 컵밥이라는 아이템이 내가 혼자 하다가 없어지는 개인 ‘장사’가 될까 봐 걱정이 되었습니다. 내가 죽어 없어지더라고 앞으로 몇십 년 몇백 년 동안 많은 사람들에게 계속해서 좋은 음식을 대접하는 ‘회사’가 되었으면 좋겠다는 꿈이 있었습니다.” 라고 말한 부분이었습니다. 그래서 이 사장 부부는 이 컵밥이라는 하나의 작은 푸드 트럭을 많은 사람이 이끌어가는 시스템을 만들려 했고, 이 시스템을 가진 회사를 통해 많은 사람들이 내가 사랑하는 좋은 직업을 함께 세워가게 하고 싶은 생각으로 가슴이 뛰어서 잠을 설칠 정도라고 하였습니다.

이 분의 짧은 말이 제게 큰 울림이 되어 한참 많은 생각을 하게 하였습니다. 이 젊은 부부는 이 컵밥 하나를 너무 좋아한 나머지 나 혼자 하다가 없어지는 것이 아쉬워 앞으로도 계속 미국에서 이어지길 바라며 장사로 그치지 않고 회사로 만들고 싶어 불철주야로 수고하고 눈물 흘리며 꿈을 이루어 가는데 과연 나는 하나님의 나라와 교회를 얼마나 사랑하고 있으며 컵밥과는 비교할 수 없는 예수그리스도의 교회를 나의 유익을 위한 장사가 아닌 많은 사람이 함께 일구어가야 하는 하나님의 회사로 일구려 하고 있는가 하는 반문이 자연스레 나에게 스스로 들었고 더 나아가 하나님께서 나에게 하시는 책망과 같이 들리는 선명한 메시지가 되었습니다.

사랑하는 성도 여러분은 어떠신가요? 우리 베델교회가 혹시나 내 개인의 신앙과 우리 가족과 아이들의 유익만을 위한 작은 장사로 만들어 가고 있지 않는지 생각해 보면 좋겠습니다. 우리 베델교회는 앞으로 수십 년, 아니 수백 년 주님 오시는 날까지 진리의 복음을 선포하고 많은 이들을 구원에 이르게 하는 복음의 일등회사로 하나님은 남기를 원하십니다. 우리 세대가 없어지면 사라지는 그런 장사하지 말고, 수백 년을 바라보며 나의 불편함을 감수하고서라도 더욱더 많은 이들에게 생명을 전하는 회사로 만들어 냅시다.

Let’s Run a Corporation, not just a Business!

A while ago, I had an opportunity to watch a short video while having lunch with assistant pastors. The video was about a young couple with 5 children who came to the States and thought that Americans would love ‘cupbab’. The food was enjoyed by many students preparing for test at Noryangjin Student Village in Korea. The couple started a food truck business in Utah. They now have tens of franchised trucks and own a 100-million-dollar corporation.

I was impressed by what the president of the company said in the video. “I love this cupbab. I was worried that this item would begin and end just as a personal ‘business’. I dreamed that this business would become a ‘corporation’ that will continue to serve good food to people for tens and hundreds of years, even after I am no longer here.” The couple took this small food truck business called Cupbab, and then created a system for multiple people to operate. The thought of creating a corporation with this system, through which many people can have good jobs that they love, kept him up at nights with excitement.

What he said resonated with me and kept me in deep thoughts for a long time. This young couple loved cupbab so much that they couldn’t bear the thought of it disappearing just as a personal business. They wanted to see it continue in the States. They didn’t stop with just having a personal business. They made their dream come true by working day and night, with tears, and created a corporation. A question naturally entered my mind. Then, just how much do I love God’s Kingdom and Church, church of Jesus Christ that cannot be compared to cupbab. Is it just a business to benefit myself or are we together building God’s corporation? It was a clear message of rebuke to me.

What about you? We need to consider if we are creating Bethel Church to be just a small business that benefit my own personal faith, and family and children. Going forward, Bethel Church must proclaim gospel truth for the next tens and hundreds of years, until Jesus returns. God wants Bethel Church to be the best corporation for gospel to bring salvation to many people. We shouldn’t be doing business that disappears after our generation. Looking hundreds of years ahead, despite our hardship, let’s build a corporation that proclaims life to many more people.
