The Power of the Basics
Rev. James Suh
Every time fall comes around, there are many things I look forward to but in particular is the start to a new football season. As complex as the sport may seem to be, like all sports it’s quite simple. It requires, great players, great coaching, and an excellent team. Among one of football’s greatest coach, Vince Lombardi, he was known to have beginning every season by holding up a ball and saying, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” His point was simple: greatness comes from mastering the basics and he taught that teams won because they blocked, tackled, and passed with excellence—day after day. The same is said and proven in business. There is a certain business book that analyzed why certain companies succeed but the striking takeaway was this: despite their varied industries and approaches, all successful companies had one thing in common—they “do the basics well, most of the time.”
When it comes to church, I wonder then what are the basics? How can this be applicable in our spiritual walk? It would seem that the basics are Prayer, Scripture, worship, and loving others. Yes it is not flashy, but they certainly would seem to be a good foundation of building a strong spiritual life – especially for our next generation. Now consider what is happening in the church today. For so long, we feared that the youngest generations were slipping away. Headlines declared the “rise of the nones,” and many of us prayed with heavy hearts for our next generation. But now—something remarkable is happening. Fresh research from Barna shows that the younger generation are attending church more often than any other generation. Yes, you read that right. The very age groups many thought were lost are showing up nearly twice a month, seeking worship, community, and faith. Meanwhile, older generations have slowed in their attendance while passed but we are seeing the young and restless leading a quiet resurgence. This is no small shift. It is a sign that God has not forgotten this generation. In a world of uncertainty, division, and noise, young adults are hungering for what is eternal. They are finding their way back—not to religion as duty, but to Christ as life. The way forward is not complicated. It is the same lesson Lombardi taught his team, the same principle businesses have proven, the same truth the Scriptures remind us: do the basics well. Let us be a church that is learning, sharing, worshipping, and growing. When we return to the fundamentals, God will do the rest.
