코로나 이후, 우리는 많은 변화를 체감하며 살고 있습니다. 아마 9.11 사태 이후, 우리는엄청난 변화를 체험했습니다. 공항이 그 중 단연 1등이죠. 지금도 물을 가지고 보안검색대를 통과하지 못하고, 신발을 벗고 회전링 안에 들어가 두 손을 투항 하듯 들고 정지 상태로 있어야 하는 불편을 겪고 있습니다. 공항 게이트까지 가서 배웅하고 마중하는 일은 기억도 나지 않은 옛날이 되었습니다. 그러나, 코로나 때는 아예 공항도 갈 수 없었던 시절도 있었고, 비행기를 탈 때, 마스크를 끼고 타는 것이 정상이 된 상황입니다. 여행의 필요는 더 많아졌지만, 여행은 더 불편해졌고, 여행 경비도 상상을 초월할 정도로 비싸졌습니다. 국제적으로는 아직도 끝나지 않은 러시아 발발 전쟁으로 핵전쟁의 불안이 있고, 북한은 이에 부채질 하듯 불안을 가중시키고 있습니다. 지난 달 28일에 발사한 단거리 탄도미사일 두 발은 한국내 비행장을 무력하는 목적으로 전술 핵탄재를 모의 탑재하고 쏜 훈련이었다고 합니다. 이달 10월에는 초대형 방사포로 추정되는 SRBM 두 발을 쏜 것과, 4일에는 일본 열도 너머로 약 4500 킬로미터를 날아간 신형 지대지 중장거리 탄도미사일을 쏘아 올렸습니다. 뿐만 아니라, 지난달 8일에는 동해에 재진입한 미국의 항공모함 등 연합군 해상훈련에 대응해 사상 처음으로 150여대 각종 전투기들을 동시 출격 시킨 대규모 항공 공격 종합훈련이 전개되었습니다. 그 어느 때보다 대한민국이 위험한 상황입니다.

이렇게 많은 것들이 급변하고 우리의 삶을 위협하고 있는 가운데 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하는지 질문을 던지게 됩니다. 아마, 이런 비슷한 상황을 겪고 있었던 시대가 엘리사 선지자 시대가 아닌가 싶습니다. 주전 7-8세기 맹위를 떨치던 앗시리아가 세력을 잃어 유브라데스강 상류에도 못 미치고, 타의 추종을 불허했던 이집트의 막강 세력도 위협이 되지 않던 틈을 타서 북이스라엘은 역사상 가장 영향력있는 오므리-아합 왕조를 세웁니다. 그러나 그것도 잠시 예후의 쿠데타로 오므리 왕조는 무너지고 아람의 벤하닷 2세를 암살하고 권력을 잡은 하사엘이 북이스라엘을 침공하게 되고, 나라는 마치 핵무기 앞에서 무릎을 꿇듯, 군비통제까지 받는 굴욕을 받게 됩니다. 나라를 지키기 위해서 외교력을 발휘해야 하는데, 약소국의 서러움에 의지할 곳은 하나님 밖에 없는 상황에 엘리사 선지자는 중병으로 임종하게 됩니다. 그때 요아스 왕은 눈물을 흘리며 “내 아버지여 내 아버지여 이스라엘의 병거와 마병이여” 외쳤습니다. 이 외침은 엘리사의 스승 엘리야 선지자가 하늘에 올라갈 때, 엘리사 선지자가 외쳤던 말과 똑같습니다. 선지자 엘리야, 엘리사 둘 다 말씀의 종들이었습니다. 한마디로 나라를 지킨 것은 군사력, 무기, 핵이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀이었다는 것입니다. 세상이 어려울수록 교회는 말씀에 더욱 붙들려 일어나야 합니다. 그리고 더욱 무릎 꿇어야 합니다. 그것 만이 살 길입니다.

Concern for the Home Country

After the Coronavirus, we are having to endure many changes. Just as it was following 9/11, we have all gone through such tremendous change. The airline industry certainly takes precedence here. Even today, we still cannot take water through the security checkpoints. We must remove our shoes and stand still inside those rotating rings, as if we are surrendering with our hands raised up. How inconvenient it has become. I can barely remember the last time we could greet each other or say our good-byes to each other at the boarding gate. But during Corona, there was that time we couldn’t even go to the airport. Now, wearing masks during the flight has become the norm. Today, there is a greater need to travel, but only with greater inconvenience, and now, only with skyrocketing prices. In the international scene, Russia’s seemingly unending outbreaks of war has now led to hints of nuclear war, while North Korea fans the flames, only to aggravate the tension. On the 28th last month, two short range ballistic missiles from North Korea threatened South Korean airports. It was claimed to be a military exercise containing a simulated load of tactical nuclear arsenal. This October, we saw two large SRBMs shot from a massive launcher. On the 4th, just over the Japanese Archipelagos, the latest advanced short range ballistic missile was fired (surface-to-surface) from over 4,500 kilometers. Moreover, last week on the 8th, an American aircraft carrier was redeployed into the East Sea. United in response, the UN Allied naval forces carried out a large-scale joint exercise, altogether capable of sending out over 150 different fighter jets. It is the most critical time for South Korea than ever before.

In the midst of so many drastic and life threatening changes, we need to ask ourselves, “How then, shall we live?” I wonder if the times we are living in today are similar to what the Prophet Elisha went through in his time. It was a time during the 7th-8th centuries B.C., right at the downfall of the rampart rule of Assyria. Just out of reach of the upper banks of the Euphrates River, with no fear of threat by the immense Egyptian forces (that were second to none), Northern Israel thrives through the Omri-Ahab dynasties with the greatest of influence in all of their history. Despite that, Jehu’s coup d’etat which overthrew the Omri dynasty led to the assasination of Ben-Hadad II of Aram by Hazael who then invaded Northern Israel. As a nation who surrenders on their knees before a nuclear threat, they were humiliated as their weapons were seized. Diplomatic power is necessary to sustain one’s country, yet, the misery of being the lesser nation called for trust in God alone. It is in these circumstances that Elisha dies of a severe illness. It is then that King Jehoash cries in tears, “My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!” This was the same cry from the Prophet Elijah (the mentor of Elisha) as he ascended to heaven. The prophets Elijah and Elisha, both were the servants of the Word of God. In a word, the security of one’s country does not come from military force, armaments or nuclear weapons, but by the Word of God. As the world becomes more and more difficult, the Church must arise and take hold of the Word of God. She must, all the more, get on her knees. That is the only way to survive.
