이번 한국 방문 시기는 단풍이 절정이던 때였습니다. 웨스트민스터 신학교 자문위원 모임과 코로나로 인해 밀렸던 스케줄을 한꺼번에 진행하느라 잡힌 시기가, 기대치 않았던 단풍의 절정과 맞아떨어졌던 것입니다. 흑백이던 세상이 아름다운 총천연색으로 변해 눈 앞에 펼쳐지니 저절로 탄성이 나왔습니다. 늘 앞만 보고 달려왔다고 생각했는데, 캘리포니아에서 17년 넘게 살면서 가을 단풍을 잊고 살았다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 맛있는 한국 음식도 한국을 방문할 때마다 기대되는 설렘이지만, 뜻하지 않는 가을을 만난 것은 그야말로 하나님의 위로와 선물이었습니다.

어느 목사님의 글에서 성도들과 단풍 구경 갔다가 만난 짜장면집에 쓰여 있는 문구를 소개하는 이야기를 보았습니다. 알고 보니 맛집으로 소문난 짜장면집이었는데, 주차장 입구에 이렇게 쓰여 있었습니다. “짬뽕 없습니다. 탕수육도 없습니다. 짜장면만 있습니다.” 그래서 중식당이라 하지 않고 짜장면집이라고 소개한 식당인데, 손님들은 한 시간 반 이상 줄을 서서 기다렸다가 겨우 들어간다고 합니다. 식당에 들어서기 전 또 하나의 문구가 있는데, “우리는 뻔한 음식을 팔지 않습니다.” 메뉴도 필요 없이 달랑 짜장면만 하나 있는 식당이 뭐가 저렇게 당당할까 싶습니다. 그런데, 식당 안으로 들어서는 순간 또 하나의 글귀가 손님을 반깁니다. “이 문만 통과하면 손님 집 입니다.” 당당함을 넘어 비범함과 묘한 따뜻함마저 느껴지는 식당입니다. 주문받을 필요도 없이 자동으로 나오는 짜장면은 모두 “내 평생에 먹어본 짜장면 중에 최고다.”라며 먹는다고 합니다. 직원들뿐 아니라, 사장님까지 나와서 짜장면 먹는 법도 친절하게 가르쳐 주는 짜장면 맛을 한층 돋워 주는 기분 좋은 짜장면집이었다고 합니다.

가을 단풍 구경 나온 손님들에게 단풍보다 더 기분 좋은 짜장면 맛을 보게하는 식당의 당당함이, 이 시대의 교회다운 모습이라는 생각을 문득 해 봅니다. 교회 주차장 입구에 이런 간판 하나 세워 놓으면 어떨까요? “우리 교회는 다른 메뉴 없습니다. 복음만 있습니다.” 주보를 받아 들고 예배당 안으로 들어가는데, 헌금함 옆에 또 하나의 사인이 있습니다. “오늘 설교 말씀은 뻔하지 않습니다.” 그리고, “이 예배당에 들어오는 순간 당신은 이 하나님의 집(베델)의 VIP입니다.” 주차장에서 안내하시는 밝은 표정의 성도들부터 예배 후 카페에서 만나는 맛있는 커피까지 베델 성도님들의 친절은 마치 고향 내 집에 온 것처럼 편하고 포근하게 합니다.

짜장면집 마지막 인사가 있습니다. 돈 내고 나갈 때 있는 글귀가 손님을 웃게 합니다. “가끔 와야 짜장면이 맛있습니다.” 자주 오지 말라는 말 같지만, ‘안 오면 당신 손해야’라고 말하는 것 같은 자신감이 느껴집니다. 물론 교회는 가끔이 아니라, 자주 올수록 맛있습니다. 일주일에 한 번이 최소입니다. 가을 단풍을 잊게 하는, 매일 와도 맛있는 우리 베델교회 되십시다.

Bethel Church over Autumn leaves + Jjajangmyun

My visit to Korea was at the peak of autumn leaves season. I was there to attend a Westminster Seminary Advisory Committee meeting as well as to catch up on my scheduled events that had been postponed due to Covid. It happened to fall on the season of autumn leaves. As I saw the beauty of multi-colored leaves unfolding before my very eyes, as if the world had been in black and white, I was in awe. I constantly forged ahead looking at what is in front of me. While living in California for over 17 years, I realized that I had forgotten about the autumn leaves. Expectation of eating good food is exciting when visiting Korea. Visiting Korea this autumn was comfort and a gift from God.

I read a post by a pastor who described signs that were on a jjajangmyun restaurant he went while taking a trip to see the autumn leaves with his congregation. This restaurant was well known for good food. There is a sign at the parking lot entrance. “We don’t have Jjamppong. We also don’t have Tangsuyuk. We only have Jjajangmyun”. This is why this restaurant is known as a jjajangmyun restaurant and not a Chinese restaurant. Customers have to wait in line for over an hour and half to get in. Just before entering the restaurant, there is another sign that says, “We don’t sell ordinary food.” It seems very bold for a restaurant that only sells jjajangmyun and no other menu. But the minute you enter the restaurant, you’re greeted with yet another sign. “As soon as you pass through this door, this is your home.” It is beyond boldness. This made you feel extraordinary and warm. Without ordering, jjajangmyun comes out. Everyone praises as they eat, “This is the best jjangjangmyun I have ever eaten in my whole life.” Not just the servers but the owner come out to instruct you on how to eat their jjajangmyun, raising yet another bar for this restaurant. The pastor acclaimed that it was a wonderful experience to eat here.

The boldness of this restaurant, with desire to serve the best jjajangmyun to customers who came for autumn leaves, perhaps, should be the image of churches today. How about if a sign is posted at the entrance of our parking lot, “Our church doesn’t have other menu. We only have Gospel.” Then, after receiving a copy of Sunday bulletin, as you enter, there’s a sign next to the offering box, “Today’s message is not ordinary.” And another sign shows, “The moment you enter this sanctuary, you are a VIP in God’s house(Bethel).” Kindhearted Bethel members, from smiling faces of parking lot attendants to Café servers, will make everyone feel comfortable like they are at home.

There is a farewell sign in this jjajangmyun restaurant. Customers laugh as they pay and make their way out. “Jjangmyun tastes good, when you eat it once in a while.” It sounds like they don’t want you to come often, but it feels more like boldness of saying, ‘You will miss out if you don’t come’. Of course, church feels better when you come often and not once in a while. Minimum is once a week. Let our Bethel church make you feel good even if you come every day. So good that it will make you forget about autumn leaves.
