매년 크리스마스 계절이 오면, 아끼던 시집에 껴놓은 가을 낙엽을 찾듯이 인생에 잊지 못할 낭만의 한 장면이 떠오릅니다. 아마 평생 교회에서 자라왔고 주일학교부터 신앙생활을 했던 분들은 더욱 이 계절에 주시는 추억들이 많으리라 생각합니다. 저에게는 초등학교 시절 크리스마스 연극에 발탁되어 요셉의 역할을 했던 것이 지금도 어제의 일처럼 기억됩니다. 지금 생각해 보면, 그것이 저의 생애에 유일한 연극 경험이었던 것 같습니다. 어렸을 때부터 안경을 썼던지라, 안경에 솜을 달아 마치 고드름이 달린 것처럼 추위에 떨듯이 대사를 외웠습니다. 지금 생각하면 마침 제 이름의 뜻이 ‘한국의 요셉’인지라(물론 제 이름의 요셉은 구약 인물이지만) 예수님의 ‘이 땅의 아버지'(earthly father) 요셉의 역할을 쉽게 맡은 것이 아닌가 싶습니다.

하나님의 입장에서 마리아를 통해 당신의 아들 예수 그리스도를 이 세상에 보내시기 위해 꼭 한 사람을 찾아야 했습니다. 성령으로 잉태된 생명을 지킬 뿐 아니라, 아이를 밴 임신한 여자를 지켜줘야 했기 때문입니다. 당시는 자기의 씨가 아닌 아기를 임신한 여자가 살아갈 수 없는 사회였습니다. 마리아와 정혼한 관계에서 마리아가 임신한 것을 알았을 때 유대인의 법에 따라 돌을 던져 죽일 수도 있고, 단순히 이혼을 할 뿐 아니라 치욕적인 불명예를 입혀 사회적으로 매장시킬 수도 있었을 것입니다. 그래서 하나님의 요셉 선택은 참으로 중요했을 것입니다. 요셉의 인격을 엿볼 수 있는 성경구절이 있습니다. “그의 남편 요셉은 의로운 사람이라 그를 드러내지 아니하고 가만히 끊고자 하여”(마 1:19). 피해 의식 속에 반응한 것이 아니라, 한 여인의 생명과 그녀의 미래를 생각하고 스캔들을 만들지 않기로 결심한 요셉을 보면서 하나님의 요셉 선택에 우리는 ‘아멘’할 수밖에 없습니다.

크리스마스 계절에 세상이 만들어낸 수많은 조연들이 많습니다. 산타클로스를 위시해서 루돌프 사슴, 선물 담는 양말, 징글벨, 반짝거리는 백화점 장식 등…. 그러나 우리가 잊지 말아야 할 진짜 조연이 있다면 요셉이 아닌가 싶습니다. 성경에 예언한 대로 응하기 위해 사용하셨던 인물, 요셉이 아니었다면 크리스마스 이야기는 많이 달라졌을지도 모릅니다. 하나님의 은혜로 우리 인류의 역사에 뚫고 들어오신 크리스마스는 예수님이 성육신하여 오신 하나님의 의도적 개입입니다. ‘하나님이 구원하신다’ 뜻의 이름, 예수… 그 이름대로 아기의 이름을 예수라 짓도록 하나님이 지시한 대로 순종한 요셉은 잊혀질 수 없는 인물입니다.

이 성탄의 계절에 잊혀진 요셉과 같은 은혜의 손길이 없었는지 잠시 뒤돌아보며, 생애 처음으로 만나는 것 같은 신선한 크리스마스 무대를 경험하시기를 기도합니다.

Very First Play of My Life

Like looking for precious autumn leaves that have been pressed in the pages of a poetry book, when Christmas season comes around each year, a sentimental image comes to my mind that I cannot forget. I’m sure many of you, who grew up in church and had been going to Church school all your life, will have fond memories from the season. When I was in elementary school, I was selected to play the role of Joseph in a Christmas play. I still remember like it was yesterday. Now that I think about it, that was my only experience of being in a play. I wore glasses since I was young. I would put cotton on them as if icicles were hanging from them and memorize my lines as if I was shivering from cold. Now that I think about it, maybe I easily got the part of Joseph, Jesus’s ‘earthly father’, because my name means ‘Joseph of Korea’ (although my name takes after Joseph of the Old Testament).

From God’s perspective, to send His son Jesus Christ to earth through Mary, He had to find that one person. Not only would this person protect the life conceived by the Holy Spirit, but he had to also protect the pregnant woman. It was during a time when the society forbade woman carrying another man’s baby, other than her husband, to live. When Joseph realized that Mary was pregnant while they were engaged, according to the Jewish law, he could either stone her to death or divorce her with shameful dishonor and have her be socially ostracized. That is why selection of Joseph was probably very important to God. There is a passage in the Bible that describes Joseph’s character. “And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly”(Mat 1:19) Joseph did not respond from a victim mentality. He thought about the life and future of the woman and decided to not make a scandal out of it. Seeing Joseph’s action, we can only say ‘amen’ to God’s selection of Joseph.

There are many extra roles that the world made for Christmas season. Starting with Santa Claus, there are Rudolf the reindeer, socks for gifts, jingle bells, sparkling decorations of department stores, etc. However, there is a supporting role that we should not forget, and that is Joseph. If it wasn’t for Joseph, who was used to fulfill the prophesy of the Bible, Christmas story may have been drastically different. Christmas that came through the history of humanity is God’s purposeful intervention as Jesus, the incarnated God. Jesus means ‘God saves’…according to that name, the baby was named as given in obedience by Joseph, who cannot be forgotten.

This Christmas season, I pray that you will take a moment to reflect on whether you have been touched by the hand of grace, like forgotten Joseph, and experience the freshness of Christmas stage, like for the first time in your life.
