하나님의 이름에 ‘여호와 라파’가 있습니다. ‘치료하시는 하나님’이라는 뜻입니다. 성탄절에 이 땅에 오신 하나님, 예수 그리스도는 공생애에서 끊임없이 수많은 환자들을 치료해 주셨습니다. 밤이 새도록 치료해 주셨습니다. 의대를 나오신 분도 아니고, 병리학을 공부한 분도 아닌데, 만병에 의사라는 별명도 가지셨고, 수많은 환자들이 그를 찾아옵니다.

성탄절은 하나님이 수퍼 의사가 되어 하늘에 뚝 떨어진 날이 아닙니다. 오히려 돌봐 주어야 할 절대적 필요성이 있는 어린 아기로 오신 날입니다. 추위에 옷을 감싸 주어야 하고, 모유를 먹여야 살 수 있는 가장 연약한 아기로 오셨습니다. 우리 모두 태어날 때 울면서 태어났습니다. 가족들의 환영을 받으며 태어났지만, 어른들은 고생 많은 세상에 태어난 줄 알고 운다고 새생명의 기쁨을 에둘러 말합니다. 우리 예수님도 고생 많은 세상에 태어나신 줄 알고 울면서 나신 날이 성탄절입니다. “기쁘다 구주 오셨네” 캐롤 찬양은 부르지만, 실제로 고생이 많은 세상에 할 일 많아서 하나님 본체인 분이 아기로 오신 날입니다. 왜 수퍼맨으로 오시지 않고, 우리처럼 울면서 아기로 태어나셨을까요? 수퍼 의사나, 수퍼 맥가이버로 오셨으면 더 좋은 것이 아니었을까 잠시 생각해 보았지만, 그 이유를 히브리서 2장18절에 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다. “그가 시험을 받아 고난을 당하셨은즉 시험 받는 자들을 능히 도우실 수 있느니라” 즉, 크리스마스는 고난 당한 우리를 능히 돕기 위해서 고난과 시험을 당하시는 하나님으로 오신 날이라는 뜻입니다.

예수님이 하얀 가운을 입고 환자 한 분 한 분을 진료하는 모습을 상상해봅니다. 대부분 환자는 의사를 만난 후 병의 위중함 때문에 때론 겁에 질려 있고, 수술 받고 입원도 해야 하기 때문에 일상 일을 정리해야 하고, 사장이라면 일도 나갈 수 없어서 대신 일할 사람도 세워 놓아야 하고, 가정 주부라면 살림도 누구에게 부탁해야 하고, 아빠라면 뒷마당 정리하고 쓰레기 내 보내는 것도 부탁해야 하고… 마음이 여러모로 심란할텐데, 의사 예수님은 환자의 입장을 다 이해하고, “걱정하지 말라” 위로하시며, “내가 그래서 도와주러 왔다” 말씀하시는 것입니다. 매일 수많은 환자를 대하는 의사들이 진료하는 환자마다 감정이입을 할 수 없을 것입니다. 자신이 그 질병의 전문가라도, 실제로 그 병을 앓아본 적이 없다면 환자의 마음을 모릅니다. 그런데, 의사 예수님은 전문의이면서 본인이 그 질병을 앓았고, 그 아픔도 너무 잘 이해하는 분입니다. 그 분의 한 마디 “걱정말라”는 사람의 말과 다릅니다. 우리의 아픔을 아실 뿐 아니라, 능히 고치시는 분이기 때문입니다. 그것이 아기 예수로 오신 크리스마스의 메시지입니다.

One of God’s names is ‘Jehovah Rapha.’ It means ‘healing God.’ Jesus Chris, God who came to earth on Christmas, healed endless number of people in his lifetime. He healed them through nights. He did not go to medical school, nor studied diseases, but he was called a doctor for all sicknesses. Multitudes of the sick came to see him.

Christmas is not a day when God, as a super doctor, dropped from the sky. Instead, it is a day he came as an infant much needed of caring. He came as a weak infant that needed to be wrapped from the cold. His only survival was through a mother’s milk. We were all born into this world, crying. We were welcomed by our family. But adults express the joy of new life uttering that the babies cry because they know they have been born into a world full of hardship. The day our Jesus, knowing he was being born into a world of hardship, came into the world crying, is Christmas. Although we sing “Joy to the World, the Lord is Come”, it is a day God came in his very essence as a baby because there’s so much work to be done in this world of hardship. Why did he come as crying baby like us and not a superman? For a quick moment, we may think it would have been better if he came as a super doctor, super MacGyver, but the reason is in Hebrews 2:18. ” For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” In other words, Christmas is a day that God came to help us, who are suffering, through his own suffering and temptation.

Let’s imagine Jesus in a white gown treating patients one by one. Most patients, after meeting with a doctor, are fearful of serious illness. They put their daily life in order because of surgery and hospitalization. If you’re a president of a company, you find people to fill in during your absence. If you’re a housewife, you need to find help to run the household. If you’re a dad, you ask someone to help with yard work and to take out trash… When many thoughts run through our minds, Dr. Jesus understands our situation, comforts us and tells us “Don’t worry”, “That’s why I came to help.” Doctors, who deal with numerous patients every day, cannot possibly empathize with every single patient they treat. Even if you’re a specialist, when you have never suffered the illness, you do not really understand the patient’s mind. However, Dr. Jesus is a specialist and has suffered that illness. He understands the pain very well. His words, “Don’t worry” is different than human words. It is because not only does he know our pain, but he is able to heal it. That is the Christmas message of baby Jesus.
