사람에게는 누구나 ‘가장 궁금한 사람’이 있습니다. 성경을 읽다 보면 우리도 자연스럽게 이런 질문을 하게 됩니다. “예수님은 도대체 어떤 분이셨을까?” 그분은 왜 그런 말씀을 하셨을까? 왜 그런 기적을 행하셨을까? 사람들은 왜 그분을 따르기도 하고, 또 미워하기도 했을까? 사실 성경을 읽을수록 가장 궁금해지는 분은 예수님입니다. 그렇다면 예수님을 가장 가까이에서 지켜본 사람은 누구였을까요? 아마 많은 사람들이 한 사람을 떠올릴 것입니다. 바로 사도 요한입니다. 요한은 예수님께서 십자가 위에서 어머니 마리아를 맡기셨던 제자였습니다. 그는 그 부탁을 끝까지 지켜 마리아를 자신의 어머니처럼 모셨습니다. 또한 열두 제자 가운데 가장 오래 생존하여 밧모섬에서 요한계시록을 기록하며, 영화로우신 어린양 되신 예수님을 마지막까지 바라본 사람이었습니다. 그런 요한이 우리에게 남긴 책이 요한복음입니다. 마태, 마가, 누가복음이 예수님의 생애를 비교적 객관적으로 전해 준다면, 요한복음은 가장 가까운 제자의 시선으로 예수님을 보여 줍니다. 마치 오랜 시간 곁에서 동행한 기자가 한 사람을 깊이 취재하여 그의 진짜 모습을 들려주는 것과 같습니다. 요한복음은 예수님의 일생을 단순히 기록한 책이 아니라, “예수님은 누구이신가?”라는 질문에 대한 가장 깊은 대답입니다.

이번 새 주일 설교 시리즈의 제목을 『너무 궁금한 예수님 이야기』라고 붙인 이유도 여기에 있습니다. 성경을 읽는 가장 좋은 자세는 호기심입니다. 호기심이 있는 사람에게 성경은 가장 흥미로운 책이 됩니다. 읽을수록 더 알고 싶고, 들을수록 더 궁금해지고, 사랑하는 사람에게 꼭 들려주고 싶은 이야기로 가득한 책이 바로 성경입니다. 그리고 그 중심에는 언제나 예수님이 계십니다. 이번 시리즈에서는 요한의 안내를 따라 예수님을 가까이에서 만나 보려고 합니다. 가나의 혼인잔치에서 물이 포도주로 변한 첫 번째 표적을 시작으로, 니고데모, 사마리아 여인, 38년 된 병자, 오병이어, 날 때부터 맹인 된 사람, 마르다와 마리아, 베드로, 도마… 예수님을 만난 사람들과 사건들을 따라가다 보면, 결국 우리는 한 가지 질문 앞에 서게 됩니다. “예수님은 누구이신가?” 그리고 요한은 우리를 그 질문의 답으로 인도합니다.

올해 남은 기간 동안, 요한이 가장 가까이에서 보고 듣고 기록한 예수님의 이야기를 함께 따라가 보시기 바랍니다. 그 여정을 통해 우리도 제자들처럼 예수님의 영광을 보고, 예수님을 더욱 사랑하게 되기를 소망합니다.『너무 궁금한 예수님 이야기』 개봉박두!

The Story of Jesus I’m So Curious About

Everyone has someone they are “most curious about.” As we read the Bible, we naturally come to ask these questions: “What kind of person was Jesus, after all?” Why did He say those things? Why did He perform those miracles? Why did people follow Him, and others hate Him?” In fact, the more we read the Bible, the more Jesus becomes the person we are most curious about. Then, who was the person who watched Jesus from the closest distance? Perhaps many people will think of one person. It is none other than Apostle John. John was the disciple whom Jesus entrusted His mother, Mary, while on the cross. He kept that request until the very end, honoring Mary as his own mother. He was also the one who survived the longest among the twelve disciples, recording the book of Revelation on the Island of Patmos, and looking upon Jesus, the glorious Lamb, until the very end. The book that John left for us is the Gospel of John. While Matthew, Mark, and Luke deliver the life of Jesus relatively objectively, the Gospel of John shows Jesus through the eyes of His closest disciple. It is just like a reporter who accompanied someone for a long time, gathering information and reporting on that someone’s true self. The Gospel of John is not simply a book that records the life of Jesus, but the deepest answer to the question, “Who is Jesus?”

This is also why the title of new sermon series is called ‘The Story of Jesus I Am So Curious About’. The best attitude for reading the Bible is curiosity. To a curious person, the Bible becomes the most fascinating book. The Bible is a book full of stories that make you want to know more the more you read, become more curious the more you hear, and make you want to share with the people you love. And Jesus is always at the center of it. In this series, we intend to meet Jesus up close, following John’s guidance. Starting with the first sign where water was turned into wine at the wedding in Cana, we will look at Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the sick man of 38 years, the feeding of the five thousand(five loaves and two fish), the man blind from birth, Martha and Mary, Peter, Thomas… As we follow the people and events that met Jesus, we will eventually stand before one question: “Who is Jesus?” And John guides us to the answer to that question.

During the remaining period of this year, I hope you will follow the story of Jesus that John saw, heard, and recorded from the closest perspective. Through that journey, I hope that we too, like the disciples, will see the glory of Jesus and come to love Jesus even more. ‘The Story of Jesus I Am So Curious About’ is coming soon.
