네덜란드 디자이너 크리스티엔 메인데르츠마씨에 따르면 104kg짜리 돼지 한 마리를 3년 동안 추적한 결과, 일상적인 생활용품을 만드는데 돼지가 여기저기에 아주 요긴하게 사용되는 흥미로운 것을 확인했다고 합니다. 104kg짜리 돼지로 비누, 샴푸, 헤어 컨디셔너, 화장품, 치약 등 일상적인 생활용품뿐만 아니라, 돼지털로 페인트 붓, 사포 등도 만든다고 합니다. 심지어 돼지의 단백질은 반죽 촉진제로 쓰이고 젤라틴 등 그 용도는 무궁무진하다고 합니다.

이 밖에도 우리의 건강을 위해서도 크게 기여하는데, 돼지야말로 단백질 공급원으로 최고이고, 돼지의 심장판은 인간의 심장을 대체하기도 합니다. 또한 돼지는 생리와 장기의 형태가 인간과 가장 유사하다고 하여서 선진 각국에서는 바이오 장기 생산연구 매개체로도 활용하고 있습니다. 물론 한국 사람에게는 삼겹살에 상추, 그리고 쌈장이 최고이긴 하지요.

그러나 우리가 가지고 있는 돼지에 대한 편견은 뭡니까? 더러운 동물, 미련한 동물, 느리고 답답한 동물 등으로 생각하고, 심지어 인간답지 못한 사람을 빗대어 말할 때, ‘돼지보다 못한 놈’이라는 말도 합니다. 그러나 위에서 언급한바, 생각해 보면 돼지는 사람들을 위하여 자신의 전생애를 바치는 동물 중의 하나이고 큰 가치를 지니고 있다는 것입니다. 104kg의 돼지가 곳곳에서 많은 사람의 유익을 위하여 요긴하게 쓰임받는 것을 보면서 우리가 어떻게 사느냐에 따라서 우리의 삶이 돼지보다 못할 수도 있고, 반대로 참가치를 지닌 인생이 될 수도 있다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 나의 삶을 돌아봅니다. 제대로 걸어가고 있는가? 제대로 쓰임 받고 있는가? 그러면서 나의 인생이 이 세상에서, 가정에서, 교회에서, 곳곳 에서 다양하게 그리고 유익하게 쓰임 받았으면 좋겠다고 생각하게 됩니다.

요즘 로마서로 큐티를 하면서 하나님께서 우리의 인생을 얼마나 가치있게 여기시고 사랑하시는지 깨닫게 됩니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에게 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라”(롬 5:8) 가장 가치 없는 인생이지만 가장 귀하다 여기시고 자신의 무한한 사랑의 증거로 삼아 주시니 얼마나 감사한지요. 그러므로 돼지의 가치보다 못한 인생이 아닌, 예수님의 생명의 가치로 살아가게 하심에 감사를 드립니다.

Worse Than A Pig?

According to a Netherland designer Christien Meindertsma, after tracking a 104 kg pig’s life for 3 years, she made an amusing discovery that confirms pigs are very helpful in making everyday items. Not only are the everyday necessities like soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, makeup and toothpaste made from 104 kg pig, but also paint brushes and sandpapers are made from pig’s hair. Even protein from pigs is used to make dough promoter and gelatin. There are multitude of uses.

Aside from that, pig’s contribution to our health is huge since pork is a great source of protein. Pig’s heart valve can also be used in human heart. Also, pig’s menstruation cycle and shape of organ are very close to human. Many advanced nations use pigs for bio-organ production research. For Koreans, pork belly lettuce wrap with ssamjang(sauce) is one of the best. However, what is our opinion of pigs? We think of them as dirty animal, lazy animal, slow and frustrating animal. We even refer to people who are inhumane in character as ‘worse than a pig.’ But when you think about things mentioned above, pigs are one of the animals that give their everything to human, and bring great values.

As we see how useful a 104 kg pig is to people everywhere, I realize that depending on how we live our lives, we could be worse than a pig or that our lives are truly worthwhile. I look back on my life. Am I doing well with my life, am I being utilized well? It would be worthwhile if my life is utilized well in many places, this world, in my family, and in the church.

As our QT deals with Romans nowadays, we understand how God values our lives and loves us. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”(Ro 5:8) How thankful we are that God values our lives and shows it important. Therefore, we give thanks that we can live our lives through value of God’s life, and not less than a pig.
