얼마 전 [로기완]이라는 탈북자 영화를 봤습니다. 영화배우 송중기씨가 탈북자로 주연을 맡았습니다. 탈북한 어머니와 아들은 공안당국의 눈을 피해 허드렛일을 하며 브로커에게 가짜 중국 여권을 사기 위해 돈을 모읍니다. 그 와중에 공안 경찰에 쫓기다가 어머니를 교통사고로 잃고, 평생 모은 돈을 가지고 중국 여권을 만들어 벨기에에 밀입국 합니다. 그 이후 벨기에에서 합법적 신분 취득을 위해, 난민 신청을 하지만, 법적 과정을 밟기까지 각고의 고생을 합니다. 겨울에는 공중화장실에서 기거하고, 쓰레기를 뒤져 먹으며 겨우겨우 연명 합니다. 그마저도 추운 밤을 지낼 수 있었던 공중화장실이 수리 중 닫혀 버리자, 추운 겨울 전전하다가, 얼어 죽기 일보 직전 빨래방을 발견하고 한쪽 구석에서 기절해 버립니다. 때마침 빨래하던 한국 여성이 그의 지갑을 훔치게 되고, 잠에서 깨어난 주인공은 어머니의 생명의 돈까지 도난 당한 것을 알고, 경찰에 신고한 끝에 CCTV를 통해서 범인을 잡게 되었는데, 그것을 인연으로 서로 돕는 관계로 발전합니다. 중국 사람 이름으로 직장에 취직해 일하면서 하루하루 살지만, 또 한편 탈북자 신분으로 난민으로서 법적 체류를 할 수 있도록 법적 절차를 밟아갑니다. 그 과정에 자신이 중국 사람이 아니라, 북한 주민이었다는 것을 증명하는 것이 더 힘든 상황에서 겪는 인간적인 배신과 사랑 속에서 묘한 인간의 애환을 그려내는 영화입니다.

마약중독에 빠져 추방된 여자 친구, 그리고 눈물로 여자 친구를 보내며, 곧 따라가겠다고 약속하는 주인공 남자의 이야기로 영화는 해피엔딩으로 끝이 납니다. 탈북자 주인공은 더 이상 숨어 살지 않으며, 쫓겨 다니지 않고 당당히 자유의 나라에 머물 수 있는 법적 신분을 취득하게 됩니다. 그때, 그는 ‘법적인 체류가 아닌, 합법적으로 떠나는 권리를 얻기 위한 싸움’이었다 고백하며 그의 여자 친구를 만나기 위해 출국을 합니다.

어쩌면 우리 성도들의 신앙의 삶도 이 땅에 천년만년 살기 위한 싸움이 아니라, 당당히 여기를 떠나기 위한 믿음의 싸움이라 믿습니다. 이번 그리스/이집트 탐방을 통해, 천년만년 영원히 살 것인 양 자신의 화려한 무덤을 만들며 살았던 파라오들(바로 왕들)이 결국 미라가 되어 그 무덤을 만든 후예들에 의해 도굴된 현장을 보고 왔습니다. 이집트를 점령한 알렉산더 대제는 신격화된 파라오들을 보면서 자기도 신으로 등극하여 영원히 살 것 같았지만 말라리아에 걸려, 33세의 아까운 날에 죽습니다. 이 땅에서 영원히 살 기대로 미화된 죽음은 결국 인간을 피폐화 시키지만, 영원한 나라로 귀향할 목적으로 순간의 오늘을, 최선을 다해 사는 성도들만이 영원히 살 것을 믿습니다.

A while ago, I watched [Roh Gi Wan], a movie about a defector from North Korea. Actor Song Joong Ki plays the main character of the defected North Korean. Defected mother and son work odd jobs, avoid Chinese security authorities, and save money to buy fake Chinese passports from a broker. While being chased by Chinese security police, he loses his mother in a car accident. He takes his life savings to get a Chinese passport and is smuggled into Belgium. Afterwards, he applies for a refugee status to obtain a legal status in Belgium. But he faces great hardship to go through the legal process. In the winter, he barely survives staying in public restrooms and scavenging trash for food. The public restroom where he spent cold winter nights gets closed for repair. He wanders through the cold winter. Before he is about to freeze, he finds a laundromat and faints into a corner. At that moment, a Korean woman who was doing laundry steals his wallet. He wakes up and realizes that his mother’s life money had been stolen. After reporting to the police, the culprit was caught through CCTV. And their connection develops into a relationship that helps each other. He finds a job under a Chinese name and lives day by day. As a North Korean defector, he then goes through the legal processes to stay legally as a refugee. This film depicts the interesting experience of joy and sorrow of human betrayal and love in his situation where it is more difficult to prove that he is a North Korean and not a Chinese citizen.

His girlfriend gets deported because of her drug addiction. He, the main character, sends her with tears and promises to follow her soon… the movie has a happy ending. The main character, a North Korean defector, no longer lives in hiding and acquires a legal status that allows him to stay in a free country without being chased. Then, he leaves the country to meet his girlfriend, confessing that it was “his fight not to stay legally, but to have the right to leave legally.”

I believe the life of faith of believers is not about a fight to live on earth for thousand years, but a fight of faith to leave here with confidence. During our visit to Greece/Egypt, we saw sites where pharaohs (Pharaohs) built their own splendid tombs as if they would live forever. They were mummified and robbed eventually by their descendants who built the tombs. Alexander the Great, who conquered Egypt, looked at deified pharaohs and thought he would also live forever. He contracted malaria and died at young age of 33. Death, glorified with the expectation of living forever on this earth, ultimately devastates humans. But I believe that only believers who do their best in every moment today with the purpose of returning to eternal kingdom will live forever.
