오늘은 기독교의 최대 명절 부활절입니다. 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 대신 담당하여 십자가에서 죽으시고, 사흘 만에 부활하신 것을 기념하며 지키는 날입니다. 사도바울은 죽음 앞에서 이렇게 담대히 외쳤습니다. “사망아, 너희 승리가 어디 있느냐? 사망아, 너희 쏘는 것이 어디 있느냐?” 부활의 열매가 약속되어 있기에 외칠 수 있었던 것입니다. 예수님이 잠자는 자들의 첫 부활의 열매가 되심으로 그를 믿는 자 역시 죽음 너머 부활의 열매를 맺을 것을 믿습니다. 그렇기 때문에 오늘은 단순히 과거의 사건을 기념하는 명절이 아닙니다. 오히려 오늘 죽음과 같은 현실이 우리를 덮고 있어도 앞으로 일어날 확실한 미래를 선포하는 시간이라고 할 수 있습니다.

예수님은 자신이 사형당할 십자가를 며칠 앞두고 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다. “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라.”(요 12:24) 예수님의 십자가 죽음은 어쩔 수 없이 당한 죽음이 아니라, 열매를 향한 계획된 하나님의 뜻에 순종한 죽음이었습니다. 죽음과 부활, 두 모순된 개념이지만, 기독교인의 삶은 이 두 사이의 긴장 속에서 삽니다. 죽음과 같은 아픔을 견디고, 참아내면서 가정과 공동체를 살려내는 부활의 열매를 맺고 삽니다. 살려고 하면 죽고, 죽고자 하면 사는 믿음의 신비를 경험하게 됩니다.

저는 이번 주에 영국 한인 목회자들의 초청으로 같이 목회의 시름을 나누며 격려하기 위해 갑니다. 이번에 목회자 컨퍼런스에 참여하는 한 분이 제가 강사로 오는 것을 알고 이멜을 주셨습니다. 웨일즈 하노버교회 목사님이셨습니다. 처음엔 하노버에 있는 한인교회 목사님으로 이해했는데, 알고 보니, 우리나라에 복음을 전하기 위해서 왔던 최초의 순교자 토마스 선교사를 파송한 바로 그 교회의 담임 목사님이셨습니다. 26살에 조선에와서 성경책을 건네주고 참수당한 토마스 선교사는 당시 하노버 교회 담임목사님의 아들이었습니다. 자신이 설교하는 그 강단에서 아들을 목사/선교사로 안수하여 파송했는데, 허무하게 죽은 것 같아 얼마나 망연자실 했을까 싶습니다. 그러나, 그가 전한 성경책은 어느 여관집 벽에 도배되었고, 도배된 성경을 읽고 여관 주인이 예수 믿게 되고, 그 성경책을 가져다 준 12살 소년 최치량이 예수 믿게 되고, 훗날 마펫 선교사가 이 여관에 머물며, 이 사정을 알게 되었고, 그걸 계기로 여관을 사서 교회를 시작하게 되었고, 이 교회는 후에 평양 대부흥의 진원지 장대현교회가 되었습니다. 최치량은 나중에 장대현교회 초대 장로가 됩니다. 평양 대부흥의 열매로 한국교회가 일어났고, 세계에 2만 명이 넘는 선교사를 파송하게 되었으며, 지금은 토마스 선교사 파송한 후 158년을 돌아, 한인 목회자가 하노버 교회의 담임목사가 된 것입니다. 토마스 선교사의 죽음은 결코 헛되지 않았으며 부활과 함께 한국의 바친 생명을 열매로 거두고 있습니다.

Death and Fruit

Today is the greatest holiday of Christianity: Resurrection Day. It is the day we observe to commemorate Jesus Christ, Who took upon himself our sins, died on the cross, and rose again after three days. The Apostle Paul boldly exclaimed in the face of death, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” He was able to proclaim this on account of the promised fruit of the resurrection. As Jesus is the first fruit of the resurrection for those who are yet asleep, those who believe in Him also believe in the resurrection beyond death. Therefore, today is not simply a holiday commemorating past events. Despite the reality of death that surrounds us, we confidently declare a future most certain.

Jesus spoke these words a few days before facing His execution on the cross. “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:24) Jesus’ death on the cross was not some inevitable death but rather one died in obedience to God’s planned purpose. It was for the sake of bearing fruit. Death and resurrection are contradicting concepts, yet the life of a Christian exists in a tension between the two. Enduring through life, and the suffering of pain akin to death, leads Christians to bear the fruit of resurrection and to sustain both their family and community. They experience the mystery of our faith where living is dying and yet desiring death leads to life.

This week, I am going to a pastoral conference in the United Kingdom hosted by Korean pastors to share our struggles and encourage one another in the ministry. One of the pastors attending the conference learned that I would be speaking and sent me an email. He was the pastor of Wales Hanover Church. Initially, I thought he was a pastor of a Korean church in Hanover. However, I later found out that he was the senior pastor of the very church that sent out the missionary to share the Gospel in our country. Missionary Thomas came to Joseon (Korea) at the age of 26, and was arrested. After handing over his Bible he was beheaded, the first martyr in Korea. He was the son of the senior pastor of Hanover Church at that time. I wonder how devastated his father must have been as he would have to preach from the very pulpit where he commissioned his son to the Korean mission field. It must have seemed he lost his son in vain. However, the Bible Thomas preached from was plastered on the wall of an inn. The innkeeper believed in Jesus after reading the plastered Bible, and the 12-year-old boy, Choi Chi-ryang, who brought that Bible, also believed in Jesus. Later, Missionary Moffett heard about this while staying at the inn and, as a result, bought the inn and started a church. This church later became the origin of the Pyongyang Great Revival, known as Jangdae Hyun Church. Choi Chi-ryang later became the first elder of Jangdae Hyun Church. As a result of the Pyongyang Great Revival, the Korean church arose, sending out more than 20,000 missionaries to the world. Now, after 158 years since the sending of Missionary Thomas, a Korean pastor has become the senior pastor of Hanover Church. The death of Missionary Thomas was never in vain; it continues to bear fruit as a resurrection harvest as the life offered up for Korea’s spiritual heritage.
