저는 만두를 좋아합니다. 어렸을 때 설날이 오면 만두 먹는 날이라 좋아했습니다. 나이 한 살 더 먹는 것보다 추운 겨울 날씨에 뜨끈한 만둣국 한 그릇은 지금까지도 입맛을 다시는 행복입니다. 자기 입맛에 맞는 음식을 먹는 것은 사람이 누리는 기쁨 중에 큰 것입니다. 시인 다윗도 천상의 기쁨을 “원수의 목전에서 내게 상을 차려주시고”(시 23:5)라고 노래합니다. 그러나, 지금도 해석이 안 되는 것은 하나님이 우리에게 베푸시는 상급이 왜 ‘원수의 목전’에서 식탁을 받는 것인지 이해할 수가 없었습니다. 저는 밥 한 끼를 먹어도 편한 친구와 함께하는 것이 행복합니다. 원수 앞에서 밥을 먹는 것이 기분 좋을 리가 없다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 그러다가 이번에 한 일간지를 읽다가 그 실마리를 얻었습니다. 제가 좋아하는 만두 유래설을 처음으로 접했기 때문입니다.

만두의 원래 한자가 오랑캐 만(蠻), 머리 두(頭)자를 써서, 그 의미가 오랑캐의 머리라는 뜻이었답니다. 오랑캐는 원수의 대명사입니다. 그 맛있는 만두가 원수의 머리를 잡아먹는 제사음식에서 시작되었다는 것입니다. 물론 그 글이 역사적으로 고증이 된 글은 아니더라도, 억울한 인생을 살았던 시인이 훗날 하나님이 약속하신 은혜가 원수의 목전에서 밥을 먹는 것인 만큼, 지금 고난의 쓴 잔을 인내하면, 넉넉히 베푸시는 하나님의 보상이 기다리고 있다는 위로로 다가옵니다.

지난주에 제 사무실을 방문한 목사님과 이런저런 이야기를 나누면서, 만만치 않은 목회현장 이야기를 들었습니다. 목회가 참으로 위험을 감수해야 하는 직업 같다고 생각을 했습니다. 최근 시드니, 영국 목회자들을 만나면서 하나님이 계속 저에게 저들을 위로하고 세우라는 사명을 주신다고 생각했습니다. 사모님들이 생활전선에서 뛰지 않으면 생계조차 어려운 목회 현장에서도 주일마다 집에서 음식을 해서 유학생들을 먹이며, 밥 한 그릇에 예수님의 사랑을 듬뿍 담아 고향을 떠나 공부하는 젊은이들을 먹입니다. 학기말 고사 때는 새벽에 일어나 만든 김밥을 학교 입구에서 기다렸다가 등교하는 학생들에게 나눠주며 응원하는 목사님과 사모님을 봅니다. 자신들의 아이들은 집에 거의 방치되어 있다 해도 과언이 아닌 듯합니다. 어렵고 힘든 상황에서 희생적으로 목회하는 목사님들 앞에 고개가 절로 숙여집니다. 목회가 아무리 극한 직업이라도 또 교회를 개척하고 섬기는 일꾼들이 일어납니다. 그들을 향한 하나님의 위로는 무엇일까요? 고난, 희생, 억울한 누명, 질병 때론 익명이라는 원수 앞에서 따뜻한 만둣국 밥상을 차려주시겠다는 것입니다. 우리 교회가 기회가 되면 흩어져 있는 디아스포라 목회자/선교사님들을 섬기는 [만둣국 사역] 한번 해보고 싶습니다.

The Reason Why I Like Dumplings

I love dumplings. I liked New Year’s day because it’s the day that we eat dumplings. Even now, a bowl of hot dumpling soup on a cold winter day is a joy that fills my appetite more than growing a year old. Eating food that fits your palette is among the greatest pleasures a person can enjoy. The psalmist David sings of a heavenly joy where, ‘You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies'(Psalm 23:5). I have yet to comprehend why this is among the supreme gifts from God; to have a reception at a table in the presence of one’s enemies. Even just a single meal is where I find genuine happiness. When it is with a close friend. I never imagined eating in front of an enemy could spell happiness. However, while reading a newspaper recently, I discovered the clue to this verse’s explanation. For the first time in my life, I came across the origin story of my delight: dumplings.

The original Chinese characters for dumpling are “barbarian”(蠻) and “head”(頭), meaning the head of a barbarian. “Barbarian” is a byword for enemy. These delicious dumplings originated from a ritual food intended to capture the enemy’s head. While the authenticity of this account is not historically verified, it is comforting, that just as the psalmist (as the victim), eventually received God’s promised graces by dining in the presence of his enemies. He was able to endure the bitter cup of present hardships, awaiting with the assurance that God’s abundant reward waits for him.

Last week, while conversing with a pastor who visited my office, I heard various stories about the challenging realities of pastoral ministry. I couldn’t help but think about the risks one takes in ministry. Recently, meeting pastors in Sydney and the UK, I heard God’s steady voice calling to me to comfort and support them. Despite the harsh conditions of ministry, these pastors’ wives struggle to make ends meet while preparing meals every Sunday for international students. Even so, they prepare each meal with Jesus’ love knowing the students are homesick for their hometowns. During exam periods, they wake up early to make kimbap to distribute to students at the school gates and cheer them on. And I am not exaggerating the fact when I say that they do this while, many a time, their own children are neglected at home. I bow before these pastors who serve sacrificially in these most difficult situations. Nevertheless, no matter how extreme ministry may be, there are always those who plant churches and then serve in those ministries. What comfort does God offer them? The hardships, sacrificial service, unjust accusations, illness, and even anonymity, are like the enemies before whose presence is prepared a table with a warm bowl of dumpling soup. When given the opportunity, I would like our church to provide for the diaspora pastors and missionaries scattered around the world, through a [Dumpling Soup Ministry].
